PIRATE GIRL’S TENNIS WINS ONE OUT OF THREE AT PARK RAPIDS

piratetennis-pr1254013

The Crookston Pirate Girl’s tennis team opened up the season with one win and two losses at the Park Rapids Invitational on Friday.  Crookston was short-handed with three of their starters not able to make the trip, but it gave the chance for a young Crookston team a chance to get three matches against quality opponents under their belt.  “The girls competed hard and we had great weather.  Only have one outdoor practice in so far this season we are working on our consistency and stamina,” said Pirate Coach Cody Brekken. “We were missing three girls and it was nice to see some of the younger girls fill in the spots.”
Crookston lost to Minnewaska area 5-2 in the opening match, lost to Mound Westonka 6-1 and beat Aitkin 4-3.  Every match started with the score tied at 2-2 to get the matches completed in a timely manner.

CROOKSTON VS MINNEWASKA AREA
Crookston lost to Minnewaska Area in the first match of the day 5-2 and had wins at second singles from Catherine Tiedemann and four singles with Halle Winjum.  Tiedemann won her match in a third set tie-breaker (3-6, 6-4, 10-4) for one of the wins.  Halle Winjum won her match 6-2, 6-3.  “Halle and Catherine played some pretty good tennis,” said Coach Brekken. “They competed hard and it was nice to see Catherine come back after losing the first set and winning the next two.  Halle came out strong and looked good in the first match and that was nice to see.”

CROOKSTON VS MOUND-WESTONKA
Crookston lost to a solid Class AA team Mound-Westonka 6-1.  The lone Pirate win came at second doubles with Halle Bruggeman and Audrey Harboot winning 6-2, 6-3.  “Halle and Audrey really played well.  They had a strong match and dominated their match,” said Coach Brekken. “They didn’t give up a game in the first set (scores started at 2-2) and really played well together and that was nice to see from a freshman and a senior.”  Even though Crookston only had one win, Coach Brekken was happy with how well his team played. “The girls played hard and competed and that was nice to see,” said Brekken. “We lost two of the matches in three sets and lost a close doubles match so the score could have been a little different, but Mound-Westonka is a solid team and it was a good match.”

Crookston picked up their first win of the season with a 4-3 victory over the Aitkin Gobblers.  Catherine Tiedeman and Hannah Lindemoen won their singles matches and doubles teams of Hayden Winjum/Emma Osborn and Halle Winjum/Emma Gunderson won their matches.  “It was nice to have a balanced attack with two wins coming from singles and two more in doubles,” said Coach Brekken. “Hannah (Lindemoen) played well and had a nice win at third singles in a three-set match.  She hit the ball well today.”  With the Pirates getting their first matches of the season under their belts Coach Brekken said they have some things to work on. “We have a lot of the things to work on, but that is expected after the first matches,” said Brekken. “We need to work on conditioning and consistency and that stuck out the most.  The girls played well and it is a good place to start the season.”
Crookston is now 1-2 on the year.

The Coon Rapids/Andover Little League baseball team won the Midwest regional championship and are advancing to the Little League World Series.  One of the big hitters on the team is Jameson Kuznia.  I was wondering if there was a relation to the Stephen-Argyle area.  I received an email from RiverView Health CEO Carrie Michalski and she said  Jameson Kuznia’s father was from Stephen. His dad is Jeff Kuznia, his grandmother Ione still lives in Stephen.

It has been a pretty good run for kids (and their families) from Storm territory and it looks like it will continue at the Little League World Series.

Park Rapids High School has announced they won’t have a Girls Hockey team this year so that will leave five teams in Section 8A.  Warroad, Thief River Falls, East Grand Forks, Detroit Lakes, and Crookston.

The tournament will look like this.  The #1, #2 and #3 seeds will get a first-round bye and the #4 and #5 teams will play each other for the rights to get pummeled by Warroad in the semi-finals while the #2 and #3 seed play the other semi-final game.  The winners of the semi’s will play in the championship.

Thief River Falls has already replaced Park Rapids in the Thanksgiving weekend tournament and Crookston has replaced Park Rapids on the schedule, but they are still a game short of the max…..which might be good for a program that is still trying to rebuild because practice is more important than games.

Last week we told you United North Central (Menagha and Sebeka) were playing a nine-man football schedule, but playing in the Section 8AA playoffs.

We heard back from Menagha Activities Director Don Donarski and he gave us the following info –

As of right now, the plan is to separate. Unless the Sebeka Board has a change of plans. The UNC Coop, in two years from now, would be Class AAA in football and Sebeka is not interested in that. What Menahga does at the point is TBD.
If we go it alone, we would be 2AA. As it stands right now, the coop was only seven kids away from being 3AAA. The Menahga District is growing. We will have classes in the 9-12th grade consistently reaching that 100 kids per grade.
Once the season is completed, the Board or members will be reaching out to neighboring schools to see if anyone wants to join us. Standing alone looks bleak because of the participation numbers.

Bemidji State’s Gunner Olszewski had a pretty good NFL debut for the New England Patriots.  He had one carry for seven yards, a reception for 13 yards and three punt returns for 34 yards!
It comes as no surprise to UMC Football fans/staff/players that he had a great debut!!

The National Federation of High School Athletics has implemented some rule changes into soccer.

3-4-3 NEW: The clock shall be stopped when a substitute by the team in the lead is beckoned on the field in the final five minutes of the second period only.
Rationale: Rule affected by change in 7-4-3.

4-3: Improperly Equipped Players (18-1-1u) Cautions will not be issued for improperly equipped player(s). If not immediately correctable, improperly equipped player(s) shall be instructed to leave the field of play when the ball next ceases to be in play. The player(s) may be replaced. The removed player(s), if not replaced, may re-enter at the next dead ball only after reporting to an official, who shall be satisfied the player’s equipment and uniform are in order. Play shall not be stopped for an infringement of this rule except that the referee may stop play immediately where there is a dangerous situation.
Rationale: The change corrects an injustice.  For the far more serious infringement of illegal equipment, the offending team does not play shorthanded.  For the less serious offense of improper equipment, they are required to play shorthanded.  The change addresses this inequity.

5-3-1d: The officials shall: (d) call out “play on” and, with an underswing of one or both arms, indicate a foul which was observed but shall go unpenalized because penalizing the offending team would give an advantage to the offending team.  If the referee applies the advantage, which was anticipated but does not develop at that time, the referee shall penalize the original offense.
Rationale: This change permits the use of one arm to signal advantage.

7-4-3 NEW: The clock shall be stopped when a substitute by the team in the lead is beckoned onto the field in the final five minutes of the second period only.
Rationale: Coaches in the lead will make multiple substitutions in the later stages of the match.  This tactic is being used as a time-wasting ploy.  Adding this rule will help the game to be decided by the players and not a coach who is wasting time when in the lead.  These substitutes are usually players from the far side of the field that take more time off the clock.  This addition would stop this practice.

9-2-1: The game is restarted with a drop ball:
a. when the ball is caused to go out of bounds by two opponents simultaneously;
b. when the ball becomes deflated;
c. following temporary suspension of play for an injury or unusual situation and a goalkeeper is not in possession of the ball
d. when simultaneous fouls of the same degree occur by opponents.
Rationale: This rule changes the awarding of a free kick to a drop ball thereby possibly creating a scoring opportunity for a team undeserving.

9-2-3: The ball is dropped by an official from waist level to the ground. Any number of players may contest a dropped ball (including the goalkeepers); a referee cannot decide who may contest a dropped ball or its outcome.
Rationale: This addition helps to provide clarity in the application of this rule.

9-2-5 NEW: ART. 5 . . . The ball shall be dropped again if it touches a player before it touches the ground or leaves the field of play after it touches the ground without touching a player.
Rationale: This addition helps to avoid confusion and allow the rule to be more equitable under the circumstances.

9-2-6 NEW: ART. 6 . . . If a dropped ball enters the goal without touching at least two players, play is restarted with a goal kick if it enters the opponent’s goal or a corner kick if it enters the team’s own goal.
Rationale: This addition helps to avoid confusion and allow the rule to be more equitable under the circumstances.

9-3: In case of a temporary suspension due to injury or any unusual situation the game shall be started by a drop ball at the point where the ball was when the play was suspended (except as noted in 14-1-7), provided the ball was not in the goal area and not in the possession of the goalkeeper.  12-8-2
Rationale: This change will eliminate free kick opportunities that often create scoring opportunities that are not deserved.

Points of Emphasis

  1. Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) Injury Prevention.
  2. Pre-game Communication Between the School Administration and Game Officials.
  3. Official’s Communicating Misconduct with Coaches.

JOKES –

On the first day of college, the Dean addressed the students, pointing out some of the rules:
“The female dormitory will be out-of-bounds for all male students, and the male dormitory to the female students. Anybody caught breaking this rule will be fined $20 the first time.”
He continued, “Anybody caught breaking this rule the second time will be fined $60. Being caught a third time will cost you a fine of $180. Are there any questions?”
