John “Jack” Eickhof – Obit

John “Jack” Kenneth Eickhof passed away on February 20, 2020 in St. Paul at the age of 96. Jack was born on April 6, 1923 to Denora and Otto Eickhof in Crookston, Minnesota. Jack was the second child of three sons, having an older brother Ralph and younger brother Charles.

He graduated from Crookston High School and then started college at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis. He left college to enter the Navy during WWII and then returned to the University to graduate in 1948 with a Bachelor of Arts focusing on architecture, engineering, and business.

Jack married Audrey Graupmann in 1949 and this March they would have celebrated 71 years of marriage together. They had six children. In 1962 Jack’s brother Charles and wife Barbara were killed in a plane crash. Their two sons (Robert and Paul) became part of Audrey and Jack’s family, while the two daughters (Catherine and Martha) became part of Ralph’s family allowing the children to stay close.

In business, Jack was involved with family construction including Otto J. Eickhof and Sons, Inc., Crookston Millwork, Union Ready Mix Co., Min Dak Mack Inc., and Agassiz Reality for many years. In 1969 he was awarded a prestigious certificate from the United States Army Corps of Engineers for a missile defense project in North Dakota. Jack also helped his sons John and Kurt start Construction Engineers in Grand Forks, ND while at the same time he developed the Eickhof Columbaria Lock and Niche system. There were three patents awarded for this system, and the company under the leadership of his son Paul, has the system installed both nationally and internationally.

Jack was very engaged in the activities of the city of Crookston. He belonged to the Crookston Presbyterian Church, Boy Scout troop 40, Elks, Masonic Order, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Lions Club, and Minakwa Country Club. He served on the board for the Crookston First National Bank and Crookston Bethesda Hospital. The Key to the city of Crookston was awarded to Jack in 2015 for contributing to the funding of the Splash Park.

Jack and Audrey loved to host fun gatherings for their friends. They helped organized the Crookston Town and Country Dance Club during their early years in Crookston. They also formed the Union Lake Volleyball Club that met every Tuesday throughout the summer for a game or two of volleyball followed by a dinner gathering.

Jack is preceded in death by his parents Otto and Denora, his two brothers Ralph (2017) and Charles (1962), and his daughter Gretchen (1978).

He is survived by his wife Audrey and his children; Jo Dell (Mark) Brekken of Apple Valley, Le Anne Eickhof (Doug Heinzen) of North Oaks, Robert Eickhof of Seattle, Washington, Paul (Cecelia) Eickhof of Crookston, Minnesota, John (Kristi) Eickhof of Marco Island, Florida, Kurt (Joyce Hagen) of Scottsdale, Arizona, and Heidi (Tim) Wills of Huntington Beach, California. He is also survived by twelve grandchildren; Andrew (Jen) Brekken, Ben Brekken, Jessica Jakubic, Charles Eickhof, Lauren (Andrew) Syrup, Eric (Alli) Eickhof, Jack Knut Eickhof, Kale Eickhof, Hadley Eickhof, Barret Eickhof, Adam Wills, Tanner Wills and four great grandchildren (Gavin Brekken, Jax Jakubic, Declan Syrup, and Tony Brekken).

A Celebration of Life will be held for Jack on March 21, 2020 at 2:00 at Waverly Gardens, 5919 Centerville Road, North Oaks, MN with a visitation one hour before. A separate inurnment will be held at a later date at the Crookston Presbyterian Church.

Sharon D. Erickson, 76, passed away on Tuesday, February 25, 2020.

Sharon Diane (Felske) Erickson was born on January 26, 1944 to Rolland and Edith (Geddes) Felske. She was baptized at First English Lutheran Church of Lockhart, attended elementary school in Lockhart and graduated from Ada High School in 1962.

On June 27, 1964, Sharon was united in marriage to Philip W. Erickson at Grace Lutheran Church in Ada. She graduated from Concordia College in Moorhead, MN in 1966 with a degree in Mathematics education and a minor in French. In the spring of 1967 Sharon and Phil Erickson moved to the farm near Lockhart and raised their three children.

She taught math in Lake Park, Twin Valley and substitute taught for many years in Ada. She also taught in the after-school Cougar Connection program in Ada for several years until she was diagnosed with breast cancer 10 years ago. She served multiple terms as church treasurer and secretary. She was also a member of GLCW, Homemakers, 2-3 and the Grace Lutheran bell choir. Sharon was also an avid Cougar sports fan.

Sharon is survived by one daughter, Jolynne (Dan) of Lake Elmo, MN, two sons Blaine (Stacy) of Ada, MN and Ryan (Lisa) of St. James, MN, and grandchildren, Eric, Larissa, Chelsey (Andy), Mitchell, Alyson, Brooklyn, Teagan, Kalon and Layton, and great-grandchildren Gavin, Kaiden and Declan, and several cousins, brother-in laws, sister-in laws, nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her husband, Philip Erickson, mother and father, Edith and Rolland Felske, sister Gin (Virginia Felske) Vigen, mother-in-law and father-in-law, E. Raymond and Berdie Erickson, and niece, Melissa Erickson.

Fire Calls:

The Crookston Fire Department responded to a report of a gas smell on the 800 block of Sampson Street at 5:40 Monday evening. No source of hazardous fumes was found, and they completed a smoke survey while on site. The survey found that detectors were well-placed and working, and everything else was in order.

Dolores Ann Baril – Obit

Dolores Ann Baril passed away peacefully at home in the afternoon with her family and husband of 65 years by her side. Dolores was born in Crookston, Minnesota January 5, 1937 and died in Murrieta, California January 29, 2020. She was the last surviving child of 10, born to Bernt and Hazel Winger. On October 30, 1954 Dolores married her best friend and love of her life, Jerry Baril. Family and friends loved her personality, wit and amazing memory of past events and people. Traveling by train with two children in tow, Jerry and Dolores made their way to California. By 1969 three more children had arrived and the Baril family had officially taken over San Diego. Dolores had a deep love of family and tradition. She spent her life surrounded by people she loved most of all: her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a 5’1” powerhouse of energy and was called “Big D” by her husband. Dolores was many things but most of all she was truly one of a kind and will be missed dearly. She left behind a legacy of tradition and family values that her family will miss dearly. Dolores and Jerry made a beautiful family that has produced many offspring. The following is their family tree which includes children, spouses, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Tony & Alison Baril, Mary & Greg Hopkins, Colette & Donnie Brooks, Karen & Tim Wyman and Jennifer Baril. Fire Calls:

On Sunday at 1:35 p.m., the Crookston Fire Department responded to a fire alarm on the University of Minnesota, Crookston, campus. Cooking smoke triggered the detector, there were no issues.
