RED LAKE RIVER LEVEL DROPPING, CITY OF CROOKSTON WILL CLOSE EMERGENCY OPERATIONS CENTER

The City of Crookston Emergency Operations Center (EOC) provided the following update regarding the Red Lake River level and EOC operations Friday –

The river height has consistently decreased in the past two days.  The current level is 20.23, and the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) is currently open.  We expect the EOC will be closing around Noon today, as there have not been any issues and the decrease continues.  Public Works staff will continue working around the clock to ensure there are not any issues until the necessary height.

Thank you to all the volunteers that assisted in the levee patrols when the river was higher and they needed to be inspected.  In case of an emergency, please dial 911.

California Governor Gavin Newsom Faces Backlash After Sending 500 Ventilators Back To Stockpile

California Governor Gavin Newsom stirred up controversy after announcing his state’s plan to send 500 ventilators to the national stockpile on Monday, in order to assist New York and other states that have been hit hardest by the novel coronavirus.

However, officials of multiple counties in California have been requesting ventilators themselves.  In Riverside County, one of the worst-hit counties in California, public health officials are predicting the country will reach its ventilator capacity by April 26.  Kevin Jeffries, Riverside County’s first district supervisor, said, “It did catch us off guard, especially when you see 500 ventilators have been shipped out and our request through the state and feds have not been filled and our attempt to purchase them on the market has not been successful.”  The county put in a request to the state for 500 ventilators on March 29, but it was denied. They then requested an additional 1,000 ventilators on April 1 and purchased 1.1 million N95 masks that have not yet arrived.

Newsom addressed the criticisms in a press conference on Thursday, pointing out that the state is currently using only 31.89% of the hospital systems’ existing ventilator capacity, excluding the ventilators procured by the state. He also said the ventilator stockpiles are pre-positioned strategically throughout the state so they can be deployed to those in need within hours.

Andrea Bocelli To Perform At Italy’s Empty Duomo Cathedral On Easter Sunday

Andrea Bocelli will live stream an Easter Sunday concert from Milan’s famed Duomo cathedral. The pews will be empty and Bocelli will be accompanied only by organist Emanuele Vianelli. The concert will stream live on Bocelli’s YouTube channel Sunday at 10 a.m. ET. In a statement, Bocelli said he hopes that the Easter concert, which will consist mostly of spiritual songs like “Ave Maria,” will provide some comfort to viewers regardless of their religion.

Bocelli’s live concert from an empty Duomo — which is normally full for Easter mass — will be an example of the extent to which the pandemic has altered public life. Italy has been hit hard by the pandemic, and Bocelli’s foundation has raised more than $140,000 via GoFundMe to help hospitals purchase supplies. He will also be part of Global Citizen’s huge “One World: Together At Home” event on April 18.
