CROOKSTON HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS PICK UP GRADUATION CAPS & GOWNS WEDNESDAY

capsgowns

On Wednesday, Crookston High School seniors picked up their caps & gowns for graduation in drive-thru fashion at Crookston High School.  With no school until at least May, students said they still hope they’ll get to have graduation.

Senior Gretchen Theis said it was surreal not being able to go to school and to be picking up her cap & gown for a graduation ceremony she still hopes will happen.  “It’s a little surreal,” said Theis.  “I have begun to start actually missing school, and I didn’t think that would hit me as fast as it did.  And the fact that we just picked up caps & gowns, I’m hoping graduation is still going to happen on May 22.”

Theis also said that online school was weird.  “Online school is weird,” said Theis. “I’m okay with it, but time management is a little harder.”

Senior Brady Butt said it’d been a new experience, but one everyone going through.  “It’s a new experience,” said Butt.  “If anything, we’re sort of a catalyst because we’re laying the plans if this ever does happen again, I guess.  Everyone is going through something right now, so it is what it is.”

Butt added it’s been good to spend more time with his family.  “Brooks, my brother, and I haven’t killed each other quite yet,” said Butt.  “But it’s been interesting hanging out (online) with everybody all the time.  You get to see your family a little more, which I’d say is a good thing.”

Senior Caden Osborn said it’s that even though this was expected, it’s a little hard to accept. “I can speak for a good majority of our seniors,” said Osborn.  “This is something that we all sort of expected to happen.  But now that it’s actually happening, it’s very surreal.  It’s kind of hard to take in.”

Osborn said the hardest thing right now is not seeing people daily.  “I’m dealing with everything pretty well,” said Osborn.  “Classes are fairly easy. They’re not insanely difficult.  Not being able to see people on a daily basis is very difficult, not being able to see my friends and only see them on my phone and talk to them over, you know.  It’s kind of difficult, but we’re making do.”

NEARLY 20 NATIONAL GUARD SOLDIERS MOBILIZE TO ASSIST WITH FLOODING IN OSLO

Governor Tim Walz signed Executive Order 20-30 Tuesday, activating the Minnesota Army National Guard to provide assistance for spring flooding in Marshall County.

On Wednesday, nearly 20 Soldiers from the Moorhead-based 2nd Combined Arms Battalion, 136th Infantry will mobilize to Oslo, Minnesota, to assist with monitoring levees and flood protection systems, as well as supporting potential rescue and evacuation operations.

Last April, Soldiers from the 2-136 Infantry provided support to Marshall County for two weeks, assisting residents with transportation of personnel, supplies, and mail into and out of Oslo while the access road was flooded.

CITY OF CROOKSTON TO CONDUCT LEVEE WALKS AFTER RIVER HITS 23 FEET

flood

The Red Lake River in Crookston has continued to rise reached 23 feet around 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday (April 7). 23 feet.   The river hit 23.23 feet at 6:00 a.m. on Wednesday and as of 9:00 a.m., it had dropped to 23.20 feet.  The level of 23 feet triggers additional duties for the City of Crookston, including levee walkers to inspect the levee for potential issues. Levee walks will continue today, with the morning walks having been completed already and evening walks being organized.
Staff will continue to monitor the river levels throughout the event to ensure the safety of the community. If you need to contact the EOC please call 281-4363. In case of an emergency please dial 911.

GOVERNOR TIM WALZ ACTIVATES MINNESOTA NATIONAL GUARD TO COMBAT FLOODING IN OSLO

Governor Tim Walz signed Executive Order 20-30, which activates the Minnesota National Guard to assist in areas of Minnesota that face a high risk of spring flooding.

“While COVID-19 presents an unprecedented challenge for our state, it is not the only emergency our first responders are preparing for,” said Governor Walz. “Our National Guard remains ready to support our communities’ health, safety, and public infrastructure.”

Large areas of Minnesota have been under significant threat of flooding during the 2020 spring snowmelt. Multiple counties have declared local emergencies and activated emergency operations plans, using local resources to protect the life and safety of people in the affected areas, and to protect property and infrastructure from additional damage.

Most immediately, the Minnesota National Guard will assist the Marshall County Sheriff and the community of Oslo, Minnesota by monitoring dikes and flood protection systems and supporting potential rescue and evacuation operations.

This Executive Order will be effective immediately upon filing with the Secretary of State.

Stephanie Grisham Leaving Role As White House Press Secretary

tmpbd9f25e2-d5f7-4683-9235-a68011e99db5-jpg

White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham is leaving that role to become First Lady Melania Trump’s chief of staff and spokeswoman. President Donald Trump’s campaign spokeswoman Kayleigh McEnany will replace Grisham as White House press secretary.

The first lady announced Tuesday in a statement: “I am excited to welcome Stephanie back to the team in this new role. She has been a mainstay and true leader in the Administration from even before day one, and I know she will excel as Chief of Staff.”  Grisham said in the statement: “I continue to be honored to serve both the President and First Lady in the Administration. I will stay in the West Wing to help with a smooth transition for as long as needed.”

Grisham, 43, had served as the first lady’s communications chief before taking on the additional roles of White House press secretary and communications director last June. In her more than nine months as White House press secretary, Grisham never held a traditional briefing in the White House press room — a regular task for nearly all other modern press secretaries.

Lindsay Reynolds, who served as Melania Trump’s chief of staff for more than three years, resigned earlier this week “to spend time with her family,” the first lady’s statement said, adding: “I appreciate all that Lindsay Reynolds did over the past three years, and wish her well in her future endeavors.”

Acting Secretary Of The Navy Thomas Modly Resigns After Remarks Made On Open Micraphone

tmp711130bb-8d90-4b57-aab3-4168a9dc23b9-jpg

Defense secretary Mark Esper confirmed Tuesday that he had accepted the resignation of Acting Secretary of the Navy Thomas B. Modly after Modly called the aircraft carrier captain he fired last week “stupid” in an address to the ship’s crew.

“Secretary Modly served the nation for many years,” Esper wrote in a statement on Modly’s resignation. “I have the deepest respect for anyone who serves our country, and who places the greater good above all else. Secretary Modly did that today, and I wish him all the best.” Esper’s statement also confirmed reports that Army Undersecretary James McPherson has been appointed to replace Modly.

Modly initially he said he “stood by every word” of his comments, but later he apologized for them. Modly announced Thursday that he had relieved Capt. Brett Crozier of his role as leader of the USS Theodore Roosevelt after Crozier wrote a letter pleading with the Navy for more resources to isolate sailors amid an outbreak of the novel coronavirus on the ship, which is docked in Guam to test personnel. Modly was appointed in November following the resignation of Richard V. Spencer.

James Taylor Is ‘The Voice’ Season 18’s Mega Mentor

tmp2d77f0e8-a8fb-4dd2-a33f-b09f9d6de5a7-jpg

Music icon James Taylor will serve as the mega mentor on Season 18 of The Voice. Taylor will join the coaches to mentor the artists remaining from the Battle Rounds, and prepare each team for the Knockout Rounds, which will begin on Monday (April 13) at 8 p.m. EST/PST

The Knockout Rounds will have the contestants paired against a teammate once more, but unlike the Battle Rounds, they will each select their own song to perform individually while their competitor watches and waits. The coaches will then choose the winner from their team to advance. Taylor will help coach and rehearse with the four artists that were saved by their individual coaches during the Battle Rounds for the first-ever Four-Way Knockout. Only one winner on each team will advance, chosen by America’s votes and revealed at the beginning of the first live show.

Coaches Kelly Clarkson, John Legend, Nick Jonas and Blake Shelton play a game of ‘telephone’ to tell each other the news about Taylor in a promotional announcement for the show. Check out the comical announcement at the link: here
