GOVERNOR WALZ UNVEILS NEW STATE COVID-19 DASHBOARD TO TRACK COVID-19 INFO

Governor Tim Walz today unveiled a new State of Minnesota COVID-19 dashboard that tracks the virus in Minnesota and provides the latest available data on available ventilators, ICU beds, personal protective equipment (PPE), and testing. The dashboard will be updated daily and is available at https://mn.gov/covid19/.

“During Minnesota’s Stay Home Order, we’ve worked to collect data, increase the availability of necessary equipment, and develop strategies to address economic and social impacts of COVID-19,” said Governor Walz. “This dashboard will provide Minnesotans with timely, accurate information about the data that informs our decisions on COVID-19 response, recovery, and resources.”

“We’ve been working around the clock during this Stay Home Order to increase hospital capacity and better track the spread of this virus,” said Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan. “This dashboard will help Minnesotans see the virus’s impact on Minnesota and the data that drives our response to COVID-19.”

During Minnesota’s Stay Home Order, Minnesota’s priorities have been to collect data about COVID-19; increase the number of ICU beds, ventilators, and PPE needed to care for a surge in patients; and develop strategies to address the economic and social impacts of COVID-19 in Minnesota. Governor Walz has formed work groups to focus on critical response and recovery work, including hospital surge capacity, supplies, testing, and education and child care.

Two Cruise Ships Holding Passengers With Covid-19 Arrive In Florida

Two cruise ships holding coronavirus patients aboard for two weeks after being turned away from South American ports were allowed to dock in Florida on Thursday. The Zaandam and a sister ship sent to help it, the Rotterdam, were both given permission to disembark passengers at Port Everglades after days of negotiation with local officials. The final agreement was reached on Thursday afternoon between local, state and federal officials and Carnival Corp., which owns the Zaandam and the Rotterdam, said Broward County officials and Holland America, the company that operates the ships.

Holland America had said 45 passengers who were mildly sick would stay on board until they recovered, but that it needed 10 people to be taken to a Fort Lauderdale hospital for immediate medical care.  For nearly three weeks, passengers have not been able to step on dry land. Guests have not left the ship since March 14 and have self-isolated in their staterooms since March 22, the company said. Four elderly passengers have died on the Zaandam, at least two from COVID-19, said William Burke, chief maritime officer for Carnival Corp., which owns the ships. Nine people have tested positive for the new coronavirus, Burke said earlier this week.

There are 442 guests and 603 crew on the Zaandam, and 808 guests and 583 crew on the Rotterdam. The Rotterdam was sent last week to take in some of the passengers and provide assistance to the Zaandam since it was denied permission to dock at ports in South America. About 250 have reported influenza-like symptoms since March 22, including 17 aboard the Rotterdam, while 45 currently are mildly ill, Holland America Line has said.

Over 6.6 Million Americans File For Unemployment Amid Coronavirus Pandemic

A record-breaking 6,648,000 people filed for unemployment in the week ending March 28 amid the novel coronavirus pandemic, according to data released by the U.S. Department of Labor on Thursday. COVID-19 has slammed the U.S. economy, forcing thousands of businesses to shut down amid government-mandated stay-in-place orders.

The Department of Labor said the service industry, led by accommodation and food services, was among the hardest-hit by the COVID-19 outbreak. Other industries that have been heavily impacted include health care/social assistance, manufacturing, retail and construction.

Just a few months ago, prior to the COVID-19 outbreak, the unemployment rate in the U.S. was near a 50-year low.

PETA Urges Kate McKinnon To Use CGI Cats In Scripted Series Based On Netflix’s ‘Tiger King’

PETA is urging Kate McKinnon to use only CGI cats in the upcoming scripted series about Joe Exotic (real name Joseph Maldonado-Passage), the now-imprisoned big-cat breeder who is the topic of the recently released Netflix docuseries “Tiger King.”

Last November, McKinnon signed on to star in and executive produce the TV adaptation of the podcast network Wondery’s “Joe Exotic” podcast, portraying a big-cat enthusiast named Carole Baskin, who learns that Maldonado-Passage is breeding and using his big cats for profit. According to UCP’s description of the potential series, “Carole sets out to shut down his venture and incites a quickly escalating rivalry. But she has a checkered past of her own, and when the claws come out, Joe will stop at nothing to expose her hypocrisy, and the results prove deadly.”

“Tiger King,” the documentary by Eric Goode and Rebecca Chaiklin, has been a smash hit for Netflix and on social media. The docuseries has been Netflix’s No. 1 title overall in the U.S. since Monday, per the streaming service.

Singer Lizzo is doing her best to show hospital workers appreciation for all of their hard work during the coronavirus pandemic.

“Thank you @Lizzo for sending lunches to the UW Medical Center – Montlake Emergency Department today!” read the shoutout the singer got Monday from UW Medical Center located in Seattle, Washington after they received lunch. “Your support of our frontline healthcare workers means a lot.”

The location was just one of several hospitals that got a special delivery from Lizzo; lunch was also sent to the ER staff at Henry Ford Hospital located in her hometown of Detroit, Mich. and on their Twitter page they posted a video of Lizzo personally thanking all of the staff for their sacrifice.

Lunches were also sent to ER staff at the M Health Fairview University of Minnesota Medical Center (whose staff thanked the singer by tagging her in a photo of them), as well as hospitals in New Orleans.

Medical professionals have been at the frontlines of the coronavirus pandemic from the start and singer Lizzo is doing her best to show hospital workers appreciation for all the tedious hours they put in to keep the rest of us afloat.

“Thank you @Lizzo for sending lunches to the UW Medical Center – Montlake Emergency Department today!” read the shoutout the singer got Monday from UW Medical Center located in Seattle, Washington after they received lunch. “Your support of our frontline healthcare workers means a lot.”

The location was just one of several hospitals that got a special delivery from the body positive entertainer this week.

A set of lunches were also sent to the ER staff at Henry Ford Hospital located in her hometown of Detroit, Mich. The hospital’s official Twitter page even posted a video of Lizzo personally thanking all of the staff for their sacrifice.

“SURPRISE! @lizzo treated our ER staff at #HenryFordHospital to lunch today and shared a message of thanks to our #HealthcareHeroes on the front lines. #Lizzo, from the bottom of our hearts, thank you so much for making our day brighter with your generosity,” read the caption.
