Naval Academy Launches Investigation Into Social Media Posts

The U.S. Naval Academy has launched an investigation into tweets allegedly made by a midshipman in the wake of protests over the police custody death of George Floyd in Minnesota. The posts were allegedly made on a since-deleted Twitter account identified as belonging to Chase Standage, a Midshipman 1st Class from California. Screenshots posted online appear to show one tweet allegedly about a police officer firing tear gas at an unarmed protester demonstrating after the death of Floyd, and another post allegedly commented on a black woman’s fatal shooting by police in Kentucky.

The tweets surfaced on the same day academy Superintendent Vice Adm. Sean Buck posted a video message condemning separate racial remarks made earlier this month by a retired captain and former Naval Academy trustee that disparaged admission by the academy of African Americans, Asian Americans and women.  Depending on the results of the investigation, the midshipman could be disciplined under the Uniform Code of Military Justice or be dismissed from the academy.

U.S. Supreme Court Blocks Trump Administrations From Ending DACA

On Thursday, the Supreme Court rejected President Donald Trump’s effort to end legal protections for 650,000 young immigrants. Young immigrants will retain their protection from deportation and their authorization to work in the United States.

Chief Justice John Roberts and the four liberal justices were in the majority in 5-4 outcome. The justices rejected administration arguments that the 8-year-old Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Program is illegal and that courts have no role to play in reviewing the decision to end DACA. The program covers people who have been in the United States since they were children and are in the country illegally. In some cases, they have no memory of any home other than the U.S.

Kristen Stewart To Play Princess Diana In New Film Titled ‘Spencer’

tmpf0f6ce9f-e503-461e-be58-504cac539a59-jpg

Kristen Stewart has been cast as Princess Diana in an upcoming film titled Spencer.

According to Deadline, the film “covers a critical weekend in the early ‘90s, when Diana decided her marriage to Prince Charles wasn’t working, and that she needed to veer from a path that put her in line to one day be queen.” The couple separated in 1992, before getting divorced in 1996. Diana died one year later in a car crash in Paris.

Director Pablo Larraín says Steward has the qualities necessary to play Diana, adding, “to do this well, you need something very important in film, which is mystery. Kristen can be many things, and she can be very mysterious and very fragile and ultimately very strong as well, which is what we need. The combination of those elements made me think of her. The way she responded to the script and how she is approaching the character, it’s very beautiful to see. I think she’s going to do something stunning and intriguing at the same time. She is this force of nature.”

POLK COUNTY DEPUTY KYLE OLSON AND K9 BUFFY ARE PREPARING FOR CERTIFICATION TO WORK NEXT WEEK

buffy3-2

Polk County Deputy Kyle Olson and his K9 Buffy have been going through training over the last three months to get certified for Buffy to work with the Sheriff’s Office.  Olson said they’ve been learning a lot. “We’re on our 13th week and have one week left,” said Olson. “Things are going really good. Buffy’s been learning and I’ve been learning just as much as she has.”

The training prepares K9s and their handles for both the United States Police Canine Association certification and the National Police Canine Association Certification.  Olson said he’ll have to choose which one the pair will certify in. “We’ve been learning USPCA and NPCA standards,” said Olson. “I have to choose one of those when I get back to figure out what I’m going to certify in because I have to certify with her every year. We’ve been taking care of that. A lot of it is doing drug detection in rooms, inside and outside of cars, tracking, and a lot of agility and obedience stuff.”

Buffy was donated to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office along with her training by McDonough K9 who will certify the new partners next week. “The nice thing with McDonough K9 is he certifies us at the end, so next Wednesday and Thursday I’ll be certifying in drug detection and some of the other stuff we do,” said Olson. “Then I’ll have a year and a half before I have to get recertified.”

Following their certification, Olson and Buffy will begin working the county together with their first shift on June 29. They’ll also be going around to various businesses and other events to introduce Buffy to the community.  With many normal events such as the county fair, night to unite, and festivals being canceled, Olson said the community can also contact the Sheriff’s Office to see if Buffy and Olson can come to any community events that are taking place to meet her. “I know Sheriff Tadman has told me there are a few businesses and people that want me to come to meet Buffy,” said Olson. “As long as we’re free we’d be more than willing to come to have the community meet Buffy, and maybe show some drug detection stuff we’d do out on the street.  And if people want to meet Buffy, they’d just have to call me, or Sheriff Tadman at the Sheriff’s Office and we can set up a time for the community to meet her.”

The Polk County K9 Program ensures Buffy has everything she needs to not only be a good working dog like training, and equipment, but a healthy and happy dog with food and toys to play with. Donations to the Polk County K9 Program should be addressed to:
