CROOKSTON’S ANNUAL NIGHT TO UNITE CANCELED

night-to-unite

The annual Night to Unite celebration will not be taking place this year.  The Night to Unite Organization suggested agencies postpone it to the first week in October.  In addition to potential pandemic concerns, as we all know, planning an event in this part of the country for the fall is not the best idea with harvest and potentially unfavorable weather.  We hope to have it again in 2021.

Updated daily at 11 a.m., with data current as of 4 p.m. the previous day.

Data is for cases that were tested and returned positive. All data is preliminary and may change as cases are investigated. Many data points are collected during case interviews. Data presented below is for all cases, regardless of interview status. Data for cases pending interview may be listed as “unknown/missing.”

Not all suspected cases of COVID-19 are tested, so this data is not representative of the total number of people in Minnesota who have or had COVID-19. Cumulative numbers are since Jan. 20, 2020.

Daily Update:

Because all data is preliminary, the change in number of cumulative positive cases and deaths from one day to the next may not equal the newly reported cases or deaths.

MINNESOTA’S UNEMPLOYMENT RATE ROSE 9.9% IN MAY

deed-4

Minnesota’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate rose to 9.9% in May according to numbers released today by the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development. Minnesota added 9,800 payroll jobs in May on a seasonally adjusted basis, up 0.4%, with the private sector adding 27,500 jobs, up 1.3%, during the month. Government lost 17,700 jobs from April to May.

“Our economy is facing an unprecedented challenge, which these numbers reflect. Slight job increases this month are a positive sign, but the employment rebound will continue to vary greatly by sector,” said DEED Commissioner Steve Grove. “DEED is working with other state agencies, business and labor leaders and public health experts to get Minnesotans back to work as quickly and safely as possible.”

May’s employment numbers capture the job situation immediately prior to the lifting of the Stay at Home order and the phased reopening of non-Critical Sector businesses in the state. The rapid changes in employment due to the pandemic have proved difficult to measure using traditional methodologies. After review of the numbers, April’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate has been revised up to 8.7% from 8.1%, an unusually large revision.

Seasonally adjusted gains in May were led by leisure & hospitality up 13,800 jobs, with accommodation & food service gaining 11,900 of the jobs. Retail trade gained 10,300 jobs, followed by construction up 7,100 and other services (including personal services) up 3,500, and health care & social assistance up 3,100.

Seasonally adjusted losses in May were led by government, which was down 17,700 jobs, with 16,300 of those losses in local government. Other large seasonally adjusted job losses were in information, down 1,700 and manufacturing, down 1,200 jobs.

U.S. unemployment decreased 1.4 points to 13.3% on a seasonally adjusted basis in May. The U.S. gained 2.5 million payroll jobs in May, up 1.9% with the private sector gaining 3.1 million, up 2.8% on a seasonally adjusted basis.

In Minnesota, the number of people unemployed increased 35,770 to 302,741 in May while the number employed fell by 34,235 to 2,765,258. The Minnesota labor force dropped by 1,535 people in May, with the labor force participation rate remaining stable at 68.9%.

Over the year in May, Minnesota shed 393,101 payroll jobs, down 13.1%, while the private sector shed 346,662 jobs, down 13.5%. This is an improvement for the private sector, which was down 14.3% in April over the year. All supersectors lost jobs in May over the year in Minnesota.

Employment fell in May over the year in all Minnesota Metropolitan Statistical Areas.

President Trump Introduces Initiative To Help Prevent Suicide Among Veterans

tmp94234c55-51da-47bc-931e-7266a1557939-jpg

On Wednesday, President Trump announced a new initiative to help veterans suffering from mental health issues and suicidal thoughts.

The Roadmap to Empower Veterans and End a National Tragedy of Suicide, or PREVENTS, was established by the president’s executive order last December and spearheaded by second lady Karen Pence. “They fought their battles overseas and now we must join them in fighting this new battle at home,” Trump said during a speech at the White House. “They face tremendous, tremendous trauma.”

The initiative put forth 10 recommendations for federal agencies and public organizations to take action in helping veterans in need, and also established a new public health campaign to improve veterans’ awareness of mental health resources available around the country. According to the 2019 National Veteran Suicide Prevention Annual Report, 45,390 American adults died from suicide in 2017, including 6,139 U.S. veterans. Veterans’ advocacy groups earlier this year issued warnings that a surge in mental health needs is on the horizon as the coronavirus pandemic strains resources and increases social isolation.

Atlanta Police Officer Who Shot Rayshard Brooks Charged With Felony Murder

tmpa81272bd-15e3-4206-8c29-e315b29f89ed-jpg

On Wednesday, prosecutors said that the Atlanta officer who fatally shot Rayshard Brooks in the back outside of a Wendy’s restaurant will be charged with felony murder and 10 other charges. Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard said at a news conference that officer Garrett Rolfe kicked Brooks while he lay on the ground and the officer with him, Devin Brosnan, stood on Brooks’ shoulder as he struggled for life after a confrontation. “Mr Brooks was running away at the time the shot was fired,” Howard said.

Brosnan is being charged with aggravated assault, but is cooperating with prosecutors in the case and has given testimony as a state’s witness. Howard said it’s the first time in 40 such cases where an officer has come forward to do this. Rolfe has been fired, and Brosnan, who will be charged with aggravated assault and other crimes, has been placed on administrative leave.
