CITY OF RED LAKE FALLS WILL NOT OPEN THE POOL THIS SUMMER

red-lake-falls-pool

The City of Red Lake Falls has made a difficult decision to keep the public swimming pool closed for the season.  The press release is below –

After going over the MN Department of Health Guidelines for public pools due to COVID-19, the City Council has decided to keep the public swimming pool closed for this season.
Factors that led to this decision include:
• Reduced capacity and distancing rules
• Sanitizing requirements for locker rooms, decking, pool and HVAC system
• Staff training for COVID-19 safety
• Signage requirements
• Continual employee COVID-19 screening
• Continual customer screening
The City Council took into consideration the safety of our community and public places with the information available that predicts our area will peak in mid-summer for the COVID virus.
The City was also unable to hire a full-time pool manager that had a WSI license which is required to offer swimming lessons. We were able to get additional lifeguards and they completed lifeguard training and first aid. Hopefully, they will be available next summer.
We plan to open as usual next summer if all goes as planned.

Updated June 12, 2020
Updated daily at 11 a.m., with data current as of 4 p.m. the previous day.

Data is for cases that were tested and returned positive. All data is preliminary and may change as cases are investigated. Many data points are collected during case interviews. Data presented below is for all cases, regardless of interview status. Data for cases pending interview may be listed as “unknown/missing.”

Not all suspected cases of COVID-19 are tested, so this data is not representative of the total number of people in Minnesota who have or had COVID-19. Cumulative numbers are since Jan. 20, 2020.

Daily Update:

Because all data is preliminary, the change in number of cumulative positive cases and deaths from one day to the next may not equal the newly reported cases or deaths.

More about testing data

  • As of 6/5, tests are reported per test instead of per person to account for changes in testing capacity and for individuals who are tested more than once over the course of the pandemic.
  • Due to civil unrest in St. Paul and surrounding areas, the MDH Public Health Lab was closed from 5/30 – 6/1. COVID-19 specimens were not accepted and no tests were run during this time. When possible, samples were re-routed to partner laboratories.
  • Results from 4/29 and 6/3 included a backlog of tests loaded into our system. Previously we were not updating tests reported for past dates; going forward we will be updating that historical data.
  • Results from 5/4 and 5/5 were impacted by a technical glitch and 2000 tests were reported on 5/5 rather than 5/4. With the update on 6/5, these tests are counted on the correct date rather than a day later.

‘Breonna’s Law’ Passes In Louisville, Kentucky; Banning Use Of “No-Knock” Warrants

tmpce7a51b8-1657-4fda-b17e-33f2ebce1d57-jpg

The use of “no-knock” warrants has been banned in Louisville, with the new ordinance named for Breonna Taylor, the young black woman who was fatally shot after officers burst into her home. Louisville’s Metro Council unanimously voted Thursday night to ban the controversial warrants after days of protests and calls for reform.

Taylor, who was studying to become a nurse, was shot eight times by officers conducting a narcotics investigation on March 13. No drugs were found at her home. Taylor’s mother, Tamika Palmer, said after the law was passed, “I’m just going to say, Breonna, that’s all she wanted to do was save lives, so with this law she will continue to get to do that. She would be so happy.”

The law bans the use of the warrants by Louisville Metro officers. Police typically use them in drug cases over concern that evidence could be destroyed if they announce their arrival. Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul also introduced federal legislation Thursday that would ban the use of no-knock warrants nationwide.

Dow Plunges 7% In Biggest Drop Since March

tmpd471f4f5-f8da-43ce-bf11-99a1587dd002-jpg

On Thursday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed down 1,861 points, or 6.9 percent, and the S&P 500 was down 5.9 percent, the biggest fall since March 16.  There were sharp declines in several sectors, including hospitality and leisure. As more than 20 states report a climb in coronavirus cases, there are new worries that consumers will be reluctant to return to restaurants and take trips.

During a news conference on Wednesday, Federal Reserve Chairman Jay Powell said the central bank is committed to keeping interest rates near zero, highlighting the uncertainty surrounding the timing of an economic recovery. In his remarks, Powell again acknowledged the risks of a so-called “second wave” after states reopen their economies. “You could see a public loss of confidence in parts of the economy that will be already slow to recover,” he said.

The Department of Labor released its latest report showing more than 1.5 million people filed for unemployment benefits for the first time. Since the pandemic began over 44 million have filed initial unemployment claims.

Rihanna And Other Artists Sign Open Letter Urging For Police Reform In NYC

tmpb69813bb-ff4a-47d2-b1da-d5c6c148ec48-jpg

Rihanna, Ariana Grande, Billie Eilish, Justin Bieber, Post Malone, Meek Mill, the Jonas Brothers and many more are joining the call for reform of policing in New York. The artists signed an open letter asking New York legislators to repeal section 50-A of New York State’s Civil Rights Law. The statute currently keeps police personnel files confidential and basically out of the public’s reach.

“We mourn the killing of George Floyd and the unnecessary loss of so many black lives before his. We must hold accountable those who violate the oath to protect and serve, and find justice for those who are victim to their violence,” the open letter reads in part. “An indispensable step is having access to disciplinary records of law enforcement officers. New York statute 50-A blocks that full transparency, shielding a history of police misconduct from public scrutiny, making it harder to seek justice and bring about reform. It must be repealed immediately.”

The letter is directed at Gov. Andrew Cuomo, New York Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins and Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie. The petition and open letter comes in the wake of George Floyd’s death in Minneapolis. Governor Cuomo said earlier this week that there is a need for real discussion on how to “reinvent and reimagine policing for a new generation and a new society.” He noted the discussion is a “long time coming and long overdue.”

TV Show COPS Canceled After 32 Seasons

tmp5125c623-3d8e-4507-ac6d-82aa7f69925d-jpg
Paramount Network has cancelled the long-running reality police TV series COPS, in light of George Floyd’s murder and the ensuing nationwide protests over police brutality.
The 33rd season of Cops had been set to premiere on Monday, but the episode was pulled by Paramount. In a statement, the network said there are no “current or future plans” for new episodes of the series.
Paramount has broadcast Cops since 2013 after picking it up from Fox, where it had run for 25 seasons.

Live PD, A&E’s popular police reality series, was pulled last weekend’s episode amid protests. However, THR reports that, as of now, new episodes are scheduled to air this coming weekend.

CROOKSTON HIGH SCHOOL TEACHER AND COACH, WES HANSON LOVES TO FISH FOR MONSTER MUSKIE

wes-hanson-muskie

Crookston High School teacher and coach Wes Hanson isn’t only a great teacher and coach, but he is also an avid Muskie fisherman. The thrill of catching the monster fish has had him “hooked” for the past 10-plus years. “Just hearing the word Muskie makes my eyes light up,” said Hanson.
The story on how Hanson’s love for Muskie fishing started, where he likes to fish, and more is below.

HOOKED ON MUSKIE’S AFTER THE FIRST TIME
Hanson’s love for Muskie fishing started while he was going to school and wrestling at St. Cloud State. “My teammate on the wrestling team, Joe Anderson from Bemidji, is an expert Muskie angler and has a lot of experience, and I told him to take me out some time,” said Hanson. “We went out and had fished for several hours, and they were teaching me the ropes. It is kind of exhausting throwing large baits and repeatedly casting and hadn’t had any action. Towards sunset, the wind laid down a little bit, and we were down to the last cast. Right as my bait hit the water, I noticed something off to the left and my head I remembered I wanted to reel in the bait really fast and cast it back out there. I was reeling the bait in real fast, and it got within 30 feet of the boat, and all of a sudden, a large submarine-looking Muskie materialized behind my bait and was stalking my bait. I got excited and kept reeling and reeling, and a technique that you do in Muskie fishing is a figure-eight, and I tried to go into a figure-eight maneuver, and the Muskie went under the boat and my trip was made. I thought that was the coolest thing ever and they told me to keep it going (the figure-eight), and it seemed like a minute, or maybe more like 30-seconds where I had done about a half a dozen figure-eights and all of a sudden out of nowhere the fish came back out and clamped down on my bait, and a few seconds later, after a good fight, we had it in the net. It was the most adrenaline spike I have had, and from then I have been hooked.”
The first Muskie he caught was around a 46-inch fish, and it was the start of a love of Muskie fishing.

CATCHING MUSKIE ISN’T EASY
Hanson said Muskie fishing can be exhausting, and it isn’t a relaxing day on the lake. “You are very active. It can be physically and mentally exhausting at times, and a little frustrating,” said Hanson. “When you catch one, it makes it all worthwhile.”

Wes and his dad, Corky, with a big Muskie

They call Muskie the fish of 10,000 casts. “It is a trophy fish, and people target them to get a picture with,” said Hanson. “I put in a lot of hours to get my first fish over 50 inches. I have made a lot of mistakes along the way and putting time in on the water, and I am still learning.”

HANSON’S TOP LAKES TO FISH FOR MUSKIE
Minnesota is known as the land of 10,000 lakes, and Hanson believes 99 lakes are managed for Muskie. “They like the cold water, deep lakes, and northern Minnesota is prime for that,” said Hanson. “There are great Muskie lakes in the Bemidji area, Leech Lake, and the Detroit Lakes area has some good fishing. Even Lake Minnetonka in the Cities, Mille Lacs Lake, Vermillion in the northeast and my favorite lake to fish is Lake of the Woods on the Canadian side.”

WHAT DO YOU USE TO CATCH A MUSKIE
There is a lot of lures and bait available for Muskie fishing, but Hanson says you only need a few things. “You need to get a rod that can handle the baits. I started with a seven and a half foot rod, then it was an eight and a half foot rod, and now I fish with a nine and a half foot rod,” said Hanson. “The longer the rod, the wider turns you can make while you are doing the figure-eight maneuver. You will need a baitcasting reel, and I fish exclusively with an 80-pound braid line, and I typically use a 150 or 180-pound fluorocarbon leader, 12 to 14 inches, so sturdy equipment. Buckle down the drag on the reel so you can get a good hook set, and my favorite bait to use is a bucktail. It is a lure you cast out and a straight retrieve, and my favorite one is the Green Lantern from Big Tooth Tackle, and that has been the best lure for me, and I have developed a lot of confidence in.”

WHERE TO FIND MUSKIE IN THE LAKE
Like all species of fish, Muskie move around depending on the time of year. “When I am casting, it is into less than 10 feet of water, so pretty shallow. I usually target weed beds, and if you can find pondweed or some people call it Muskie cabbage,” said Hanson. “They like rocks at certain times throughout the year. It is a tough time and can get frustrating. If there is a little bit of wind, it seems to help, but it depends on the lake.”

TECHNOLOGY HELPS WHILE FISHING FOR MUSKIE
One thing that has changed the game is the side imaging fish finders. “You can look out both sides of the boat, and people drive by and it paints a pretty clear picture,” said Hanson. “Having good electronics is pretty important, and it definitely helps.”
Hanson said if you know a fish is there, you will be more focused and keep fishing the area longer.

BRAND AMBASSADOR FOR BIG TOOTH TACKLE
Hanson has some connections with a Muskie tackle company.  “I mentioned the Bucktail earlier, and Big Tooth makes the best one,” said Hanson. “I am on their pro staff, and I mentioned Joe Anderson got me into this, and he has a company called Anderson Brothers Outdoors or ABO Outfitters, and they have an online store. You can find their products, videos, and more online.”
