CROOKSTON RESTAURANTS BEGIN OUTDOOR DINING

food-6

Restaurants across the state were able to open for outdoor dining on Monday.  Over at I.C. Muggs, customer Jodi Dragseth said it was nice to be outside and with friends. “It feels very good to be outside,” said Dragseth.  “And to join my friends for a beer.”

Dragseth also said it was nice to be able to support local businesses after things were shutdown for COVID-19. “I’ve thought about them while they’ve all been closed,” said Dragseth. “So, it’s nice to be able to be here and support them today.”

Mike Flipse also joked that even though he had to sweat to eat, it was good to let local businesses like the Irishman’s Shanty know people have been thinking about them.  At Drafts, owner Jasmine Melsa said the first day of having customers seated again was going steady. “They are going good,” said Melsa. “We’re going steady, and people are excited to be back eating and drinking out in public. Lots of excited people. Lots of beers going out.”

Monday was definitely warm and while the breeze felt good, it also made for a challenge to keep umbrellas up said Melsa. “It’s definitely warm and breezy,” said Melsa. “We’ve already had to anchor some things down on the patio in the parking lot and bring some things back inside that we couldn’t keep out there.  The umbrellas didn’t stay really well for the most part.”

UNITED WAY FUNDING HELPS CROOKSTON CARE AND SHARE SERVE COMMUNITY IN NEW WAYS

care-and-share-logo

The Crookston Care & Share has had to change its approach to delivering services over the past few months in several ways, some planned and others not.  The New Hope Food Shelf opened in March, which was followed by the onset of COVID-19 with the Care and Share initially packaging 800 meals through their “food drop” program when schools closed.

The Care and Share received a grant this year from the Crookston United Way, and Care and Share Executive Director Brian Halos said that current circumstances led to the Care and Share depending on this money more than ever. “Now more than ever, we have really come to depend on this money to deliver a much-needed service,” said Halos. “The current COVID-19 pandemic has put us all in a new and difficult situation.  We’ve had to change the way that we conduct business and deliver services.”

When the governor closed schools in March, the Care and Share created the “food drop” program to help serve the families that qualified for free or reduced lunch until the school district could resume meal preparation said, Halos. “When the schools closed in March, we got involved in a program that came to be dubbed the ‘food drop’ program,” said Halos. “There are a lot of families in the school district that qualify for free or reduced-price meals, and we felt that there was a gap created by the school closures. The purpose of that program was to fill that gap until such time as the school district could resume meal preparations.”

The Care and Share also provides meals to its residents and community members who depend on them through the soup kitchen. Because of the pandemic the Care and Share being closed to the public, community members that rely on the soup kitchen are unable to go into the building.  However, the Care and Share provides about 25 meals to go each day from the soup kitchen beyond serving 50-60 residents.

Halos thanked the United Way for the funding provided for a much-needed service in the Crookston community. “The funding provided by the United Way of Crookston helps us to deliver a much-needed service,” said Halos. “We appreciate your support and look forward to a continued partnership in the future. Thank you again for all that you do.”

Major Retailers Target, Apple And Walmart To Temporarily Close Stores Amid Protest Dangers

U.S. retailers are closing some of their stores across the country because of disruptions caused by the widespread street protests over the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis. On Sunday, Target, CVS, Apple and Walmart all said that they had temporarily closed or limited hours at some locations for safety reasons. In some places, their stores have been burned, broken into or looted as protests turned violent.

Amazon said Sunday that it has adjusted its routes and suspended deliveries to keep its drivers safe in some cities, including Chicago, Los Angeles, Seattle and Minneapolis. A spokeswoman also said Amazon is also abiding by local curfews that have required people to remain off streets after a specified hour at night.

Target, which is based in Minneapolis, said it has closed six stores for an extended period. Some of the worst damage was seen at its Lake Street store near where Floyd was killed. Footage showed people walking away with merchandise as smoke filled the store. The company said Sunday it was boarding up the store. Another of its stores in Minneapolis remains closed, along with stores in Atlanta, Philadelphia, Chicago and Oakland, California.

Walmart said it closed hundreds of stores late Sunday afternoon to protect employees and customers. CVS didn’t say how many stores it closed but said it shuttered locations are in more than 20 states and the District of Columbia. A spokeswoman said pharmacies at closed stores will reroute customers to a nearby CVS so they can get prescriptions filled. And Apple said it decided to keep some of its stores closed Sunday. It didn’t say how many were affected.

President Trump Says He Will Designate Antifa A Terrorist Organization

tmp9b471269-93f9-4088-a7d5-079e36daae8d-jpg

President Donald Trump said on Sunday the U.S. government will designate anti-fascist group Antifa as a terrorist organization. President Trump made the announcement on Twitter, comes amid violent nationwide protests about police brutality following the death of a George Floyd, a black man in Minneapolis seen on video gasping for breath as a white police officer knelt on his neck.

Several top officials from the Trump administration, including U.S. Attorney General William Barr, have blamed Antifa and other “agitators” for taking over the protests in U.S. cities. Barr said in a statement on Sunday following the president’s tweet, “The violence instigated and carried out by Antifa and other similar groups in connection with the rioting is domestic terrorism and will be treated accordingly.”

Trump’s tweet Sunday is not the first time the president has described Antifa as a terrorist group. Other conservative politicians, such as Texas Senator Ted Cruz, have made similar statements. However even if the Trump administration pursues the designation through formal channels, it would typically require coordination across multiple federal agencies. Experts say Trump lacks the legal authority to do so.

Julianne Hough And Brooks Laich Split After 3 Years Of Marriage

tmp290085b8-59e9-4865-924e-3f35be3d5280-jpg

Julianne Hough and Brooks Laich announced they are separating after nearly three years of marriage.

“We have lovingly and carefully taken the time we have needed to arrive at our decision to separate,” they said in a joint statement. “We share an abundance of love and respect for one another and will continue to lead with our hearts from that place. We kindly request your compassion and respect for our privacy moving forward.”

Hough, 31, and Laich, 36, married in 2017 after four years of dating. The couple has been spending time apart, quarantining separately amid the coronavirus pandemic. According to insiders, the breakup was “a long time coming.” “They argued a lot and just had different viewpoints on important issues,” the source said. “There’s still a love there, but not in a romantic sense.”

Chrissy Teigen Donating $200,000 To Help Bail Out Protestors After George Floyd’s Death

tmp79d23216-32d7-49df-bd3d-6924a541e4f8-jpg

As protests continue against police brutality throughout the United States surrounding the police killing of George Floyd, Chrissy Teigen is using her platform to help those protestors who have been arrested. Teigen shared on Twitter that she would first donate $100,000 to help pay for protestors’ bailouts, but later increased the amount to $200,000.

“I am committed to donating $100,000 to the bail outs of protestors across the country,” Teigen tweeted before increasing the amount to another $100,000 after someone replied in a now deleted tweet that the protestors were “rioters and criminals.”

George Floyd, a black man, died after a white police officer, Derek Chauvin, kneeled in his neck for more than seven minutes after arresting him for suspicion of forgery.  Derek Chauvin was fired from the Minnesota Police Department and then four days later was arrested and charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter. He is currently being held on $500,000 bail.
