GRAND FORKS, EAST GRAND FORKS TO SPRAY FOR MOSQUITOES TONIGHT, FERTILE THURSDAY

mosquito-spraying

The Cities of Grand Forks and East Grand Forks have scheduled citywide spraying for mosquitoes for tonight, tonight between 8:00 p.m. and 1:00 a.m.  Today’s mosquito trap count is 56.

Most of the mosquito control spray equipment is noisy and will be traveling at 10-15 mph while spraying.  Grand Forks has a couple of electric sprayers that are relatively quiet.  The mosquito control trucks are identified and travel with flashing yellow lights.  To ensure spray effectiveness during the spray operation, winds should be 10 mph or less and no inclement weather present.  Winds higher than 10 mph or inclement weather may result in the spraying being suspended until conditions improve.

For more information about trap counts and the Grand Forks Mosquito Control Program visit the website www.gfmosquito.com.

Louisville Police Officer Fired Over Fatal Shooting Of Breonna Taylor

One of three officers involved in the shooting death of Breonna Taylor, the black woman killed by gunfire when drug investigators burst into her home in Louisville, Kentucky, was dismissed from the police department on Tuesday. Two other officers involved in the raid remain on administrative reassignment. No criminal charges have been filed against any of the three.

26-year-old Taylor, an emergency medical technician, was killed on March 13 after the officers entered her apartment bearing a “no-knock” arrest warrant. Louisville police chief Robert Schroeder wrote that detective Brett Hankison “displayed an extreme indifference to the value of human life” when he “wantonly and blindly fired” 10 rounds into Taylor’s home. Schroeder said the gunshots were fired through a patio door and window covered with material obscuring Hankison’s line of sight, preventing him from knowing whether anyone was inside the apartment, or whether they posed a threat.

Taylor’s shooting returned to prominence following the May 25 death of George Floyd in Minneapolis while in police custody. That incident triggered nationwide protests against police brutality and racial bias in the U.S. criminal justice system.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL TO START 60 GAME SEASON JULY 23 OR 24 – KROX WILL CARRY THE TWINS AGAIN

ebph66bwaamxkvh

Major League Baseball has issued a 60-game schedule that will start  July 23 or 24 in empty ballparks as the sport tries to push ahead amid the coronavirus following months of acrimony. This will be MLB’s shortest season since 1878. Each team will play 10 games against each of its four division rivals and four games against each of the five clubs in the corresponding division in the other league, according to details obtained by The Associated Press.

The sides expanded the designated hitter to games involving National League teams and will start extra innings with a runner on second base.

Camps will open July 1, with the “vast majority” of teams staging camps at their home ballparks, according to the league.

The trade deadline will be August 31 and teams will have 30-man rosters for the first two weeks, and optional taxi squads for road games.

Teams must designate 60 eligible players to be part of a “player pool” for the 2020 season.

The normal 10-day injured list will remain, but the long-term 60-day IL will now change to 45 days. An additional IL for players dealing with COVID-19 will also be implemented according to MLB sources.

KROX Radio, a Minnesota Twins Radio Network affiliate since day one (in 1961), will have all the Twins games on the radio again this year.  The Minnesota Twins are the defending American League Central champions and lost to the New York Yankees in the first round of the playoffs last season.

LEGISLATIVE UPDATE ON SPECIAL SESSION FROM REPRESENTATIVE DEB KIEL

deb-kiel-e1586623878955-5

Dear Neighbors,

Our latest special session ended early Saturday morning, unfortunately with many things left undone due to demands for more spending from the governor.

After all four caucuses in the House and Senate came to an agreement about how the federal CARES Act money would be distributed to local governments, the governor then demanded the addition of millions of dollars in unrelated spending. In the end, the governor got his way, and our local governments, many already in dire straits due to the COVID-19 crisis, got nothing.

I hope that the governor changes his mind and allows the CARES Act funding to be used how it was intended – to help our local governments weather this storm. The money can’t do anyone any good just sitting in St. Paul waiting for the Governor to act.

SMALL BUSINESSES CAN APPLY FOR $10,000 COVID-19 RELIEF GRANTS

deed-5

Governor Tim Walz today announced the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) is now accepting applications for the $62.5 million Small Business Relief Grants Program for businesses impacted by COVID-19, which he signed into law last week.

“COVID-19 has brought historic challenges for our small business owners,” said Governor Walz. “This program is a result of bipartisan collaboration and conversations with the communities most impacted by this pandemic. I encourage our small business owners to apply for this funding, which will provide a lifeline for our communities and help Minnesota build a stronger and more equitable economy.”

Eligible businesses with 50 or fewer employees may apply for grants of up to $10,000. The money will be evenly distributed between businesses in Greater Minnesota and the Twin Cities metro, with at least $10 million to go to minority-owned businesses, $2.5 million to veteran-owned businesses, and $2.5 million to women-owned businesses.

“Minnesota’s small business owners deserve support through this unprecedented time,” said Lt. Governor Peggy Flanagan. “I’m proud of this program to support our historically under-supported communities, including our business owners who are women, veterans, Black, Indigenous, and people of color. But we have a lot of work left to do to rebuild our communities.”

An additional $2.5 million is allocated by law for grants of up to $250,000 each to operators of cultural malls to maintain existing tenants. This will be a separate application process, and DEED will provide more information this week at mn.gov/deed/relief.

“Small businesses across Minnesota are facing extraordinary challenges,” said DEED Commissioner Steve Grove. “We’re working with community organizations across the state to get as many businesses into the lottery for these grants as we possibly can. And the categories for special inclusion that came from this bipartisan legislation will ensure we help a broad section of businesses that need it most.”

The application period will be open for 10 days, the maximum time allowed by the law, and will close at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 2. A randomized, computer-generated lottery process will be used – in consultation with the Minnesota Lottery and observed by an independent third party – to select eligible businesses that will receive awards.

All awards will be administered by qualified local and regionally based nonprofit agencies, and the grant funds can be used to support payroll expenses, rent, mortgage payments, utility bills, and other similar business expenses.

CITY OF FISHER URGING CAUTION FOR HOMEOWNERS, BUSINESSES AFTER REPORTS OF ATTEMPTED BREAK-INS

cityoffisherlogo

The City of Fisher is urging caution to residents and business owners after receiving several complaints about attempted break-ins and other activity.  There have been attempted break-ins at a couple homes and businesses throughout the town along with reports of water spigots being turned on and left to run said City Clerk & Treasurer Stacy Wallace.  “We had a few reports of attempted break-ins and water spigots being turned on,” said Wallace. “They are randomly throughout the town, not one specific area. Our Chief of Police is aware of it and so is the county.”

Wallace suggested checking to make sure things are locked and calling if the city office if an attempted break-in is suspected. “Lock everything up at night, check things in the morning, and if you suspect something is going on call the city office right away,” said Wallace. “If it’s at an odd hour or if it’s an emergency they can call 218-443-1551 as well.”

The number for the city office is 218-891-2207 and the after-hours and emergency number is 218-443-1551.
