SOME ACTIVITIES WILL BE HELD DURING OX CART DAYS WEEK (AUGUST 17-23), INCLUDING FIREWORKS

While people continue to miss county and state fairs, and other large gatherings throughout summer 2020, especially Crookston’s Ox Cart Days, which postponed its events to 2021 due to the pandemic and insurance-related reasons, some events happening the third week of August in Crookston will keep the festival spirit alive. The annual Miss Crookston Scholarship Pageant is still planned for Friday, August 21 at 7:00 p.m. tentatively at Crookston High School, plus the Crookston Fire Department/Association Pancake Breakfast will be held drive-up style.

The City of Crookston will be honoring 2020 with fireworks on the evening of Thursday, August 20.

Ox Cart Days Festival Chair Jess Bengtson says events are planned for August 17-21, 2020 with a majority of things happening Thursday that week. Separate organizers and sponsors will be in charge of the events, and they’ll be advertised and shared by the festival.

The festival will bring back its planned entertainment like the “Snake Oil” street dance, baja race and circus acts next year with festival dates being August 16-22, 2021.

“We wanted to keep the third week of August special even if we couldn’t hold the festival, so we were able to connect with organizers and sponsors who still want to hold their events or alter them so they could be held safely,” Bengtson explained. “Places like the fire department/association had to cancel their biggest fundraiser of the year, their annual “Fun Night”, so they could really use a good turnout at their pancake breakfast which they’re planning to do drive-up style that Friday.  People are always encouraged to visit Crookston, eat at our restaurants, shop at our stores, stop at our attractions, and we want to continue to keep the spirit alive for Ox Cart Days, which has grown at an exciting rate over the last few years. We’re going to do everything we can to continue that momentum.”
Bengtson says there are a few “new” events happening the third week of August which include a Virtual Scavenger Hunt with prizes given, Kids’ Lemonade Stand Contest with prizes given, and First Responders Walk. The Walk is organized by Cruz Moreno and will be held Friday, August 21 at 9 a.m. with donations accepted for the Crookston Police Department, Crookston Fire Department and Crookston Area Ambulance Service. More details on the Walk coming soon.

MINNESOTA REPORTS 499 NEW CASES OF COVID-19, 2 DEATHS

2labgraph-46

The Minnesota Department of Health is reporting 499 new cases of COVID-19 and two deaths. Red Lake County has one new case, just the fifth confirmed case in the county. All the numbers are below.

Updated July 13, 2020
Updated daily at 11 a.m., with data current as of 4 p.m. the previous day.

Data is for cases that were tested and returned positive. All data is preliminary and may change as cases are investigated. Many data points are collected during case interviews. Data presented below is for all cases, regardless of interview status. Data for cases pending interview may be listed as “unknown/missing.”

Not all suspected cases of COVID-19 are tested, so this data is not representative of the total number of people in Minnesota who have or had COVID-19. Cumulative numbers are since Jan. 20, 2020.

Daily Update:

Because all data is preliminary, the change in number of cumulative positive cases and deaths from one day to the next may not equal the newly reported cases or deaths.

More about testing data

  • Testing numbers show how many total tests have been done for people who live in Minnesota. Some people get tested more than once.
    • As of 6/5, tests are reported per test instead of per person to account for changes in testing capacity and for individuals who are tested more than once over the course of the pandemic.
  • Due to civil unrest in St. Paul and surrounding areas, the MDH Public Health Lab was closed from 5/30 – 6/1. COVID-19 specimens were not accepted and no tests were run during this time. When possible, samples were re-routed to partner laboratories.
  • Results from 4/29 and 6/3 included a backlog of tests loaded into our system. Previously we were not updating tests reported for past dates; going forward we will be updating that historical data.

Minnesota Case Overview

  • Total positive cases: 42,772
    • Number of health care workers: 4,104

Actress Kelly Preston has died at the age of 57.

Preston’s husband, John Travolta confirmed that his wife died on Sunday morning after a long battle with breast cancer in an emotional post to Instagram: “It is with a very heavy heart that I inform you that my beautiful wife Kelly has lost her two-year battle with breast cancer,” the actor wrote, alongside a photo of his wife. “She fought a courageous fight with the love and support of so many.”

“Kelly’s love and life will always be remembered,” he added. “I will be taking some time to be there for my children who have lost their mother, so forgive me in advance if you don’t hear from us for a while.  But please know that I will feel your outpouring of love in the weeks and months ahead as we heal.”

A family representative said to People magazine, “On the morning of July 12, 2020, Kelly Preston, adored wife and mother, passed away following a two-year battle with breast cancer. Choosing to keep her fight private, she had been undergoing medical treatment for some time, supported by her closest family and friends.”

Preston is survived by her husband of 18 years, John Travolta, and their children: daughter Ella, 20, and son Benjamin, 9. The couple’s son, Jett, died in 2009 at the age of 16.

Florida reported 15,300 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday, the most new positive cases any state has reported on a single day since the onset of the pandemic.

Florida has now surpassed the previous record of 11,434 new cases set by the state on July 4, reporting a total of 269,811 cases — the third-highest tally in the nation. Florida also reported 45 new deaths for a death toll of 4,242 — ninth highest in the country. Florida Department of Health records also showed that laboratories in the state reported a record 142,981 tests on Saturday.

Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez told CNN the county is reaching capacity, and hospital beds are filling up, including ones in intensive care.  “Our ventilator usage has gone up, close to 200 now, so we definitely had a sharp increase in the number of people going to the hospital,” Gimenez said.

The United States leads all nations with 3,271,549 reported cases of COVID-19 and 134,904 deaths related to the virus, according to figures by John’s Hopkins University.

The Navy confirmed on Sunday that at least 21 people were injured after a three-alarm fire broke out following an explosion on the USS Bonhomme Richard.

Naval Surface Forces reported on Twitter that a fire was called at 8:30 a.m. as the ship was docked at a Naval base in San Diego and 17 of the 160 sailors onboard as well as four civilians sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were transferred to hospitals for treatment. “USS Bonhomme Richard is going through a maintenance availability and has a crew size of approximately 1,000,” they said.

USS Bonhomme Richard is a Wasp-class amphibious assault ship that was commissioned in 1998. All inport ships were directed to assist with the effort to combat the blaze; two neighboring ships — the USS Fitzgerald and USS Russell — were shifted further away from the fire.

The cause of the blast and the location of the fire on the ship were not immediately clear.

Netflix revealed “The Crown,” which focuses on the British royal family, has been renewed for a sixth and final season. Series creator Peter Morgan said in a statement:  “As we started to discuss the story lines for Series 5, it soon became clear that in order to do justice to the richness and complexity of the story we should go back to the original plan and do six seasons.”

The streaming service confirmed the news on Twitter, writing: “News from the palace: we can confirm there will be a sixth (and final) season of @TheCrownNetflix in addition to the previously announced five!”

Morgan, who also executive produces The Crown, originally had explained his decision to bring the show to an end after Season 5, saying, “At the outset I had imagined ‘The Crown’ running for six seasons, but now that we have begun work on the stories for season five it has become clear to me that this is the perfect time and place to stop,” he said in a statement. “I’m grateful to Netflix and Sony for supporting me in this decision.”

As of press time, there was no word on when Season 6 will begin filming.
