Herman Cain, a 2012 GOP presidential candidate, is being treated for the coronavirus at an Atlanta-area hospital, according to a statement posted on his Twitter account. Cain was hospitalized less than two weeks after attending President Donald Trump’s campaign rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma; however, he did not meet with the President. Cain, 74, was hospitalized after developing “serious” symptoms but is “awake and alert,” according to the statement.

Cain was named by the Trump campaign as a co-chair of Black Voices for Trump. Dan Calabrese, who has been editor of HermanCain.com, wrote, “I realize people will speculate about the Tulsa rally, but Herman did a lot of traveling the past week, including to Arizona where cases are spiking. I don’t think there’s any way to trace this to the one specific contact that caused him to be infected. We’ll never know.”

Asked whether Cain met at the rally with other senior campaign or administration officials, Trump campaign spokesperson Tim Murtaugh responded that “contact tracing was conducted after the Tulsa rally but we do not comment regarding the medical information of individuals.”  At least six campaign staffers and two members of the Secret Service working in advance of the Tulsa rally tested positive for COVID-19. An Oklahoma-based journalist has also confirmed testing positive soon after attending the rally.

NEW CITY OF FERTILE CAMPGROUND NEARING COMPLETION

fertile1

The City of Fertile is completing work on a new 10 site RV campground adjacent to the Polk County Fairgrounds. Fertile City Administrator Lisa Liden said planning began last year, and the work to transform the property into a campground began in May. “Planning on this actually started last year,” said Liden. “We used to have a skating rink in that location and once that was moved, we were trying to figure out what to do with that property. We get just enough inquiries of people looking for RV campsites in Fertile and didn’t really have a lot to offer in that regard. So, we started planning last year and work began in the middle or end of May.”

Liden said she believes they are making good progress on the full-service campground. “They’ve made pretty good progress,” said Liden. “The campground will be full service with water, sewer, and electric. The water and sewer are in right now, and I believe, all the work on the pads. We’re waiting for the electric to come in and then we have all the finish work that pretties it up with the grass and some trees in the future. So, it will be a pretty nice spot.”

The city will manage the 10 site campground, which Liden expects to open later in July. “10 spots managed by the city, and it was designed so that all the spots are drive-through,” said Liden. “So, you don’t have to back into anything. That will also be nice. I’m guessing it will probably be done sometime this summer. It may not be fully done with grass seeded and growing. But I think we’ll be able to start offering some limited camping there mid-to-late July, depending on need.”

The campground will be managed by the City of Fertile and information about reserving sites will be available at www.cityoffertile.org or by calling the city office at 218-945-3136.

GOVERNOR WALZ REQUESTS FEDERAL SUPPORT TO HELP REBUILD AFTER CIVIL UNREST

Governor Tim Walz today requested financial support from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to help Minnesota rebuild after civil unrest damaged public infrastructure and caused extensive fire damage in the wake of George Floyd’s death.

“We’re asking our federal partners to step up and help our communities recover,” said Governor Walz. “We need to come together to ensure Minnesotans who were victims of this destruction have access to critical infrastructure they need so they can go to the grocery store, pick up their medication, and live their lives. Together, we will rebuild.”

“We are committed to helping our communities rebuild, but we can’t do this on our own,” said Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan. “While state, tribal, and local budgets are stretched thin by COVID-19, we need everyone to step up, including the federal government, to restore safety and critical infrastructure to our communities.”

Over 10,000 public safety officials contributed to the effort to restore peace and safety, including the first full mobilization of the Minnesota National Guard since World War II. However, nearly 1,500 Twin Cities businesses were damaged by vandalism, fire, or looting. Current estimates of the damage exceed $500,000,000.

The Governor is requesting that the President “declare a major disaster for the State of Minnesota because of extensive fire damage to public infrastructure caused by civil unrest.” A preliminary damage assessment found more than $15 million of eligible damages directly related to the fires. Federal assistance would reimburse local governments for debris removal, emergency protective measures, and damage to public buildings and equipment.

Data presented below is for all cases, regardless of interview status. Data for cases pending interview may be listed as “unknown/missing.”

Not all suspected cases of COVID-19 are tested, so this data is not representative of the total number of people in Minnesota who have or had COVID-19. Cumulative numbers are since Jan. 20, 2020.

Daily Update:

Because all data is preliminary, the change in number of cumulative positive cases and deaths from one day to the next may not equal the newly reported cases or deaths.

More about testing data

  • Testing numbers show how many total tests have been done for people who live in Minnesota. Some people get tested more than once.
    • As of 6/5, tests are reported per test instead of per person to account for changes in testing capacity and for individuals who are tested more than once over the course of the pandemic.
  • Due to civil unrest in St. Paul and surrounding areas, the MDH Public Health Lab was closed from 5/30 – 6/1. COVID-19 specimens were not accepted and no tests were run during this time. When possible, samples were re-routed to partner laboratories.
  • Results from 4/29 and 6/3 included a backlog of tests loaded into our system. Previously we were not updating tests reported for past dates; going forward we will be updating that historical data.

Seattle have cleared out the city” durkan. Police in Seattle were ordered to clear out the city’s ‘autonomous zone’ and arrested over 30 protesters following an executive order from Mayor Jenny Durkan. The “occupied” zone, which has been dubbed the Capitol Hill Organized Protest area, was cleared by police on Wednesday. The order from Durkan came after four shootings, two of which were fatal, occurred in the area within the last month.

Seattle have cleared out the city” durkan. The Seattle Police Department wrote on Twitter, “due to ongoing violence and public safety issues in the East Precinct/Cal Anderson Park area, Mayor Jenny Durkan has issued an executive order to vacate the area. Seattle police will be in the area this morning enforcing the Mayor’s order.”

statement shared by Chief Carmen Best of the Seattle Police Department, he added, "Black Lives Matter, and I too want to help propel this movement toward meaningful change in our community, but enough is enough." Tensions over how to handle the area, which was set up as protests against police brutality and systemic racism started to take place across the country, have been fraught for some time now. Donald Trump has been a vocal critic of the area, while local business owners have shared their intentions to sue the city of Seattle over the situation.” data-reactid=”21″ type=”text”>In a statement shared by Chief Carmen Best of the Seattle Police Department, he added, “Black Lives Matter, and I too want to help propel this movement toward meaningful change in our community, but enough is enough.”
