LuVerne J. Hopwood, age 105 of Sauk Centre, passed away on Friday, August 7, 2020, at CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A Memorial Service to celebrate a life well lived for 105 ¾ years will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, August 20 at First Lutheran Church in Sauk Centre. We ask that those who want to attend the service be aware of the restrictions, the maximum capacity is 70 people, social distancing guidelines need to be followed, masks are required, and no visitation. People wishing to join the family at a graveside prayer service are welcome. It will be held at the Ada Cemetery on Friday, August 21 at 1 p.m.  Please bring a lawn chair, wear a mask, and social distance.

Arrangements were made with Patton-Schad Funeral & Cremation Services of Sauk Centre and Fredrikson-Ganje Funeral Home of Ada, MN.

At-large – Bobby Baird (Incumbent)

Filing is open for council seats in Wards 1, 3, 5, and an at-large seat for eligible candidates until 5 p.m. today (August 11) to file at Crookston City Hall.  The filing fee is $2.

MINNESOTA REPORTS 6 DEATHS, 332 NEW CASES OF COVID-19, 1 NEW CASE IN POLK COUNTY

The Minnesota Department of Health is reporting 332 new cases of COVID-19 from 7,022 tests, a 4.7 percent positive rate, and six deaths. Polk County had one new case for 155 cases in total. All the numbers are below –

Today is the final day to File for Crookston City Council and Crookston School Board. Today is also the final day for filing for Township offices.  Filing closes today at 5:00 p.m.

  • The Crookston School Board has three board spots up for election for a four-year term. The filing fee is $2 and affidavits are available and can be filed at the District Office at 402 Fisher Avenue Suite 593.

  • The City of Crookston will be taking affidavits for City Council for Wards 1,3,5, and an at-large seat for four-year terms. Filing is $2 and can be done at City Hall.
  • The Crookston Township Board will be taking affidavits of candidacy for Supervisor Seat A – 6 year term, Supervisor Seat B – 6-year term, and Clerk Seat E – 4 -year term. Affidavits can be filed with the Crookston Township Clerk at Valley Technology Park with a $2 filing fee, contact Theresa Tahran at 218-289-2569 if interested in filing.

Current Crookston Township Clerk Theresa Tahran has filed for reelection as the township’s clerk with a four-year term. She is the only person who has yet to apply in the township which is also seeking candidates for Supervisor Seat A and B, both on a six-year term.

Filing for the Crookston Township Board is open until 5 p.m. today at Valley Technology Park. The filing fee is $2.

Member Of Secret Service, Male Suspect Taken To Hospital After Shooting Outside White House

President Donald Trump was escorted out of a press conference on Monday evening after a person was shot by Secret Service outside of the White House. The Secret Service tweeted Monday night that a Secret Service officer and a male subject were both taken to a local hospital after an officer-involved shooting took place at 17th Street and Pennsylvania Ave.

A Secret Service agent approached Trump as he was delivering his daily press briefing in the James S. Brady Press Briefing Room. After about 10 minutes the president returned and resumed the press conference, stating that there had been a shooting outside the White House.

“There was an actual shooting and somebody’s been taken to the hospital. I don’t know the condition of the person,” Trump said.

The Northwest Regional Corrections Center announced the arrests of the following individuals:

Devin Dellmore Dionne, 24 of Halstad, for misdemeanor fleeing a peace officer by means other than a motor vehicle.

Isaac James Walski, 28, of Crookston, for a felony probation violation.

Stephen Bruce Tupa, 56 of East Grand Forks, for misdemeanor 5th-degree assault.

Dale William Sorenson, 56 of Crookston, for felony domestic assault.

Christopher Dax Hyatt, 47 of Fort Walton Beach, FL, for a misdemeanor for giving a peace officer a false name, birth date, or ID card.

Major Gas Explosion Leaves One Dead, 7 Injured In Baltimore

One person was killed and seven others were injured in Baltimore on Monday by a natural gas explosion that destroyed three homes, authorities said. The explosion occurred in the northwestern part of the city shortly before 10 a.m., officials said. The cause of the explosion was not immediately known.

The Baltimore City Fire Department confirmed that as of Monday night one person was killed and seven others were injured and transported to local hospitals. Four people were in serious condition, the department said. “We will continue to dig through the debris through the night,” the department said via Twitter. “The cause remains under investigation. Baltimore Gas and Electric Co. said in a statement that it’s working with the fire department to “make the situation safe” and switch off gas to buildings in the area.

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan tweeted, “We are closely monitoring the situation in northwest Baltimore following this morning’s horrific explosion. We have reached out to offer our full support to the ongoing response and recovery efforts, and are deeply grateful to the first responders on the scene.”

Chris Pratt and Katherine Schwarzenegger Share First Photo Of Newborn Daughter Lyla Maria

Chris Pratt and his wife, Katherine Schwarzenegger officially announced the birth of their daughter, sharing her name on Instagram Monday alongside a photo of them holding her hand.

The couple wrote: “We are beyond thrilled to announce the birth of our daughter, Lyla Maria Schwarzenegger Pratt. We couldn’t be happier. Both mom and baby are doing great. We are extremely blessed. Love Katherine and Chris.”

Lyla is the couple’s first child.  The new addition to their family comes just over a year after the couple got married. Pratt also has a son, Jack, 7, with ex-wife Anna Faris.
