U.S. Marines Call Off Search For 8 Missing Military Members Presumed Dead

tmp85e28fa4-3e95-4bfc-8a31-dad4bf746b2a-jpg

On Sunday, the U.S. Marines called off the search for seven Marines and one Navy sailor who went missing after a vessel sank off the California coast on Thursday night. All eight are presumed dead.

The amphibious assault vehicle, known as an AAV, carries Marines from ship to ship. The AAV was carrying 15 Marines and one sailor when it was transferring the sailors from the shores of San Clemente Island near San Diego to a Navy ship when it began to sink. Eight Marines were rescued after the accident, and one later died. Two are in critical condition.  The Marines were attached to the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit, based at Camp Pendleton.

The Marines have suspended all water operations of the more than 800 AAVs until the cause of accident is determined. The investigation is ongoing.

On Sunday, Microsoft confirmed that it is in talks with Chinese company ByteDance to acquire the U.S. arm of its popular video app TikTok.  Microsoft also said they discussed with President Donald Trump his concerns about security and censorship surrounding such an acquisition.

In a statement, Microsoft said they, along with ByteDance, have provided notice of their intent to explore a deal resulting in Microsoft owning and operating the TikTok service in the U.S., Canada, Australia and New Zealand. The company said it expects those talks to conclude by Sept. 15.

On Friday, President Trump said that he would soon ban TikTok in the United States. Trump and CEO Satya Nadella have spoken, the company said, and Microsoft was prepared to continue exploring the purchase of TikTok’s U.S. operations after their conversation.

In their statement, Microsoft said: “Microsoft fully appreciates the importance of addressing the President’s concerns. It is committed to acquiring TikTok subject to a complete security review and providing proper economic benefits to the United States, including the United States Treasury.”

Taylor Swift’s ‘Folklore’ Album Sets Record For 2020 With 2 MillCopies Sold

tmp3016d140-c111-4e6a-98eb-955f24ffa11a-jpg

Taylor Swift’s latest album, “Folklore,” has sold over 2 million copies worldwide in one week, setting records in the process.

Swift’s eighth studio album also generated more than 500 million streams across various platforms throughout its debut week. Republic Records, Swift’s music label, announced earlier this week that the album sold over 1.3 million copies in its first 24 hours alone.

“Folklore” has already broken records in the United States and worldwide. In its first day on Spotify, the album accumulated 80.6 million streams, setting a new benchmark on the platform for first-day streams by a female artist. Swift also holds the record for the female artist with the most albums debuting above 500,000 sales in the U.S., with all but her first album surpassing the mark. “Folklore” did well on Apple Music, too, breaking the 24-hour record for most-streamed pop album with over 35 million streams on its first day.

Ox Cart Days chair, Jess Bengtson, has been working with separate organizers who wanted to offer a safe alternative version of their events in August despite the festival’s postponement. “No one wants to completely cancel a festival as big as what Ox Cart Days have become, but with the pandemic and health and safety guidelines for the state and entire country there had to be some reimagining happen,” Bengtson explained. “Organizers have rethought out their events and will give it a try with social distancing and masks in mind.”

GRAND FORKS SYMPHONY MEMBERS GIVE A NEIGHBORHOOD MUSICAL PERFORMANCE IN CROOKSTON

gf-symphony-2

Last week the neighbors of Gail and Ken Myers were treated to some music as past, and current members of the Grand Forks Symphony played music in their yard.  The Myers daughter Chanel used to play in the symphony, and she joined the performance Wednesday night.  Gail said a lot of neighbors and friends turned out. “We had a lot of friends and neighbors from Crookston come,” said Myers. “So, we had a really good turnout. People did all the social distancing, the masks, and enjoyed the music, and it was a lot of fun.”

Chanel said Tamara Auer has been organizing these music events in Grand Forks, and this was the first in Crookston. “Tamara teaches violin lessons to three to four students in Crookston,” said Myers. “She puts together a group of musicians to play around in different people’s yards in Grand Forks, and this was the first one she did in Crookston. It’s just to get people together to hear music and give musicians the chance to play since the symphony hasn’t been able to have any of their indoor performances.”

Chanel said the members of the symphony plans to come back again with some different music. “I talked with Tamara after the performance,” said Myers. “This time they did some classical music, and because it was a good turnout next time, they’ll do some folk, polka, maybe Irish fiddle music. They’re thinking about a few different options since they spoke with a lot of the audience members and found out what kind of music they like.”

Gail added that Ainsley Boucher, a student at Crookston High School, also played with the group last week. “They invited Ainsley Boucher, who is a student at Crookston High School, to play with them too,” said Myers. “It was fun to have her be a part of that group.”
