POLK COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE WARNS OF SOCIAL SECURITY SCAM CALLS

scam-alert-1024x788-1-5

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office has received numerous reports of people receiving calls claiming there is fraud involving their Social Security number in Texas.  The calls are being placed to look like they are coming from local numbers. These calls are scams, the callers are asked to continue on with the phone call and typically the person on the line threatens criminal action if they don’t comply with the instructions. The IRS or Law Enforcement do not conduct business this way.

If you receive a call and believe it to be a scam, report it to your local law enforcement agency.

MN REPORTS 7 DEATHS, 936 NEW CASES OF COVID-19 INCLUDING 6 MORE IN POLK COUNTY

2labgraph-112

The Minnesota Department of Health is reporting 936 new positive COVID-19 cases and seven additional deaths. The new cases were found among 22,162 completed tests for a positive rate of 4.2 percent. There were six new cases reported in Polk County.

Updated September 28, 2020
Updated daily at 11 a.m., with data current as of 4 p.m. the previous day.

Data is for cases that were tested and returned positive. All data is preliminary and may change as cases are investigated. Many data points are collected during case interviews. Data presented below is for all cases, regardless of interview status. Data for cases pending interview may be listed as “unknown/missing.”

Not all suspected cases of COVID-19 are tested, so this data is not representative of the total number of people in Minnesota who have or had COVID-19. Cumulative numbers are since Jan. 20, 2020.

Daily Update:

Because all data is preliminary, the change in number of cumulative positive cases and deaths from one day to the next may not equal the newly reported cases or deaths.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR – GOOD TO SEE CARES ACT FUNDS GO TO BUSINESSES

The following is a letter to the editor –

September 27, 2020

I was so happy to see the number of Crookston businesses poised to receive CARES act funding, what an important lifeline for so many in our community. I hope this funding will help these valuable members of our business community survive, recover and thrive in the future. I was also glad to see the United Way, an organization that helps so many others provide crucial help to those in need as a recipient. However, I was surprised at the number of businesses NOT on the list and I wonder if they were unaware or simply unable to navigate what must have been a complex process to apply for these funds.

I read that a second wave of funding may be available and hope that businesses like Hair Connexion, Shear Sisters, Montagues and China Moon will be able to benefit from that aid. On that note, someone to help them navigate this process might be in order. As the city is the distributor of those funds, I don’t know if they can really help or if they have the manpower to do so, but perhaps the Chamber would step up and help its members with this process. What a wonderful service they could provide and incredible support for the local business community since they can’t do all the in person events the Chamber normally does. I imagine with the boost in funding the Chamber received with all the rest of the businesses on the published list, they’d be well positioned to think of some way to help the rest of our local business owners to benefit in the same way. It’s so great the Chamber already knows the process and how to cross the Ts and dot the Is in what I imagine is somewhat complex and perhaps time-consuming process. This is a wonderful opportunity for the Chamber and all our local businesses to work hand in hand to ensure everyone’s survival.

NFL Hall Of FamerJoe Montana And Wife Rescue Grandchild From Attempted Kidnapping

tmp70e4f4db-b856-41a5-8baf-eaa554a7826b-jpg

Authorities say that NFL Hall of Famer Joe Montana and his wife, Jennifer, rescued their grandchild from an attempted kidnapping Saturday at their home in California.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement that the suspect, identified as Sodsai Dalzell, entered the Montana residence in Malibu around 5 p.m. Saturday. The statement alleged that she kidnapped the Montanas’ 9-month-old grandchild by removing the child from a playpen in the living room, then walked upstairs with the child, where she was met by Montana and his wife, according to the sheriff’s department.

The statement said, “Mr. Montana, and his wife Jennifer, confronted the female, attempted to de-escalate the situation, and asked for the suspect to give back their grandchild. A tussle ensued and Mrs. Montana was able to safely pry the child out of the suspects arms. The suspect fled to a nearby house, where she was located and arrested by Malibu/Lost Hills Deputie. She was charged with kidnapping and burglary. The child was not injured.”

Montana said in a statement on social media.: “Thank you to everyone who has reached out. Scary situation, but thankful that everybody is doing well. We appreciate respect for our privacy at this time.”
