Anne Ione Kanten, age 93, of Crookston, MN, formerly of Milan, MN, passed away on Monday, December 7, 2020, at the Villa St. Vincent Nursing Home in Crookston, MN of COVID-19.  Anne spent much of her life-shaping Minnesota Agriculture, with the family farm, the land, and her faith all mobilizing her as a fierce advocate for families remaining on the land.

Anne Ione Knutson was born on August 20, 1927, in Goldfield, IA, the daughter of the late Gunner and Gertrude (Thorsheim) Knutson who immigrated from Norway in 1920.  She graduated from high school in Goldfield and went on to St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN, where she earned a degree in education and began teaching in Clarkfield, MN.  It was there she met Chuck Kanten. She married Charles “Chuck” Kanten in 1952 in Eagle Grove, IA, and began her life on the family farm in Milan MN, which she and Chuck worked for 40 + years.

During the economic farm crisis, Anne and Chuck became more involved in the politics of Agriculture and helped form the American Agricultural Movement (AAM) whose mission was to keep families on their farms during the financial farm crisis in the late ’70s and ’80s.   Anne and Chuck spent much of their time during 1978, 1979, and 1980 working, speaking and lobbying for AAM. This included a national tractorcade to Washington, D.C. in 1979 (son Kent, accompanied by Chuck, drove the family tractor to Washington). Anne also worked in the AAM state office in Appleton, with many local farmers including former Governor Elmer Benson.  She came to the attention of Rudy Perpich during his 1982 gubernatorial campaign and was appointed to serve as the state’s Deputy Commissioner of Agriculture.  After her tenure as Deputy Commissioner, Anne continued to be a strong advocate for farmers and their families.  Anne along with fellow farm activist Lou Anne Kling founded the Minnesota Farm Advocate Program. In 2000 she was named to the DFL’s Women’s Hall of Fame.

In 2012 following retirement, Chuck and Anne moved to Crookston MN. Sadly, Chuck passed away in July of 2014.

Anne is survived by her sons, Kent (Kim) Kanten of Milan, MN, and Dr. Erik (Judie) Kanten of Crookston, MN; daughter, Rebecca (Jack) McCoy of White Bear Lake, MN; 9 grandchildren, Jim (Laura) Kanten, Kristi Kanten, Tim (Sierra) Kanten, Emily (Alex) Ranz, Sarah (Christian) Pester, Mollie Kanten, Rachel Kanten (John Kreitzer), Noah McCoy and Caitlin McCoy; 10 great-grandchildren; and brother, Pastor Gerhard Knutson of Minneapolis MN; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.  She was preceded in death by her husband Charles Kanten; parents, Gunner and Gertrude Knutson; sister, Mildred Knutson; and brother, Kent Knutson.

A memorial service celebrating Anne’s life will be held at a later date.

President-elect Biden Nominates Retired Gen. Lloyd Austin As Secretary Of Defense

tmp9503fdc3-1e2a-40d7-bbed-39b9d7bfbd80-jpg

The Biden transition team announced Tuesday that President-elect Biden has named retired Army Gen. Lloyd Austin as his nominee for secretary of defense. The former commander of the US Central Command would make history as the first Black person to lead the Pentagon if confirmed by the US Senate.

Biden will formally introduce Austin as his nominee at a Wednesday event in Wilmington, Delaware. The secretary of defense controls the nation’s largest government agency and commands troops around the world.

Austin has worked closely with Biden while he was vice president, serving as the vice chief of staff of the Army and commanding general of US forces in Iraq, and later the commander of CENTCOM. Biden and Austin had discussions on a range of issues, including those in the Middle East and Central and South Asia. Austin would need a congressional waiver to be confirmed for the civilian post because federal law requires seven years of retirement from active duty before taking on the role. Austin retired from active-duty service only four years ago.

President Trump Signs Executive Order To Give Americans Priority Access To COVID-19 Vaccines

tmp8c1d8621-d0ee-45d8-91d2-32d67e69037f-jpg

President Donald Trump announced a decree Tuesday aimed at granting Americans priority access to vaccines. Trump’s executive order would “ensure that American citizens have first priority to receive American vaccines,” but it was unclear whether it would hold legal weight, since drugmakers have already signed deals with other countries.

Meanwhile, a more cautious presentation held simultaneously by President-elect Joe Biden warned that efforts to get the vaccine out to Americans would “slow and stall” if Congress does not urgently come up with funding. Biden stressed it was imperative for lawmakers to “finish the bipartisan work underway now or millions of Americans may wait months longer to get the vaccine.” Biden also pledged that his administration would carry out at least 100 million vaccinations in his first 100 days in office, a more conservative estimate than that offered by Trump officials.

Positive news related to vaccines emerged on Tuesday, including US regulators calling the Pfizer-BioNTech immunization — which Britain began rolling out on Tuesday — safe and effective in a briefing document. Pfizer will soon be granted emergency approval in the United States, with a meeting on the topic set for Thursday. A meeting on emergency approval for US firm Moderna’s vaccine candidate is scheduled for December 17.

CROOKSTON HIGH SCHOOL/UMC GRADUATES NAMED TO PRAIRIE BUSINESS 40 UNDER 40 LIST

nikki-massmann

Prairie Business released its annual 40 Under 40 recognition in its December magazine, which included two graduates of both Crookston High School and the University of Minnesota Crookston. The list recognizes some of the region’s best, brightest, and up-and-coming young professionals.

The two Crookston natives on the list we’re Nikki Massmann (Krueger) and Meleah LaPlante.

Massmann said it was an honor to be named to the list. “I’m honored to be considered for the list and grateful to colleagues and friends who took the time to nominate me,” said Massmann. “I know they received over 100 nominations making the selection process pretty tough, I’m sure. They’ve been doing this list for quite a while, and it profiles young professionals in the region in North Dakota, South Dakota, and I believe the western part of Minnesota.”

Massmann, who lives in East Grand Forks with her husband Brent and their three children, leads a communications team at the University of North Dakota. “I’m the Director of Communications at the Energy and Environmental Research Center at the University of North Dakota,” said Massmann. “In my role, I lead a small team of communicators and graphic designers. We mostly work on website development, news releases, and community outreach about the research we’re doing to get information into the hands of people that need to know about what it is we’re doing in their backyard. And the type of research that we’re doing and how it affects their everyday lives.”

Massmann is also the daughter of KROX Radio’s Steve Krueger and his wife, Judy.

LaPlante owns Dance Studio Elite in Fargo, which she explained she purchased as a student while attending UMC. “I went to Crookston High, graduated in 2000,” said LaPlante. “Then, I went to UMC and graduated from there in 2003 for business and marketing. When I was there, right before my sophomore year, I had a chance to purchase a small studio in Fargo. I purchased the dance studio, and that was 19 years ago. Since then, it’s grown into many more students. We just built our new forever home; basically, it’s 5,000 square feet, three nice big studios, and will be ours. That’s our exciting news right now.”

LaPlante said owning a dance studio is a lifestyle, and it’s nice to be recognized as a thriving business. “It’s an awesome recognition to get because a lot of times dance studios get put into the cute, fun, hobby category,” said LaPlante. “A lot of times, people ask me what I do during the day or what’s my real job. So, it’s nice to be recognized as a business that can be thriving, and it’s just as much a testament to the families I have and their support of our mission, teachers, and what we’re all about. Feels great to be able to share this with the people that I’ve had growing up throughout the years. I have dancers that are teaching for me that I used to teach. I have kids that I’m teaching now that are children of dancers that I used to teach. It’s been a fun, life-long journey. That’s what I consider it to be, not just a hobby; it’s a lifestyle. And it’s something that I’m very dedicated to and passionate about. To be recognized for that is an extreme honor.”

LaPlante, who recently got engaged, is the daughter of Marc and Kelly LaPlante.
