White House to launch major push to expand offshore wind power

tmp787e1ba4-91b6-4584-8731-f49ee36e6dcb-jpg

The White House on Monday launched an ambitious program to greatly boost the development of offshore wind power in the United States, initially focusing on the Eastern Seaboard. Interior Secretary Deb Haaland, national climate adviser Gina McCarthy, Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm and other administration officials said the plan calls for deploying 30 gigawatts of offshore wind power across the country by 2030. The United States currently has only 28 megawatts of capacity and one functioning offshore wind farm.

Officials estimate that reaching the goals will create more than $12 billion annually in capital investment along both U.S. coasts and create tens of thousands of jobs in the industry and in spin-off areas. McCarthy said in a statement issued by the White House: “President Biden has declared very clearly that when he thinks of climate, he thinks of people and jobs — good-paying, union jobs.”

President Biden calls for state mask mandates following CDC director warning of COVID-19 surge

tmpf67b7d86-245e-4d76-9c9f-f87ee6a8d742-jpg

President Biden is calling on states to reinstate mask mandates following a warning from the CDC about the possibility of a new surge in COVID-19 cases.

The President said on Monday said ‘this is not a time to lessen our efforts’ in the COVID-19 pandemic, adding he agrees with CDC Director Rochelle Walensky’s comments in which she expressed a feeling ‘of impending doom’ about COVID-19 cases ticking up in the United States.  Biden said:  ‘Our work is far from over. The war against COVID-19 is far from won. This is deadly serious … If we let our guard down now, we could see a virus getting worse, not better.’

Biden also criticized ‘some of the reckless behavior we’ve seen on television over the past few weeks,’ and called on states that have lifted their mask mandates to reinstate them. The CDC previously warned against states rolling back COVID-19 restrictions too soon, and Walensky on Monday pleaded with Americans to ‘just please hold on a little while longer. We must work together now to prevent a fourth surge.’

Amanda Seyfried to portray former Theranos CEO Elizabeth Holmes in Hulu series ‘The Dropout’

tmpe56cf698-c754-49ba-83f9-d70f7997ded1-jpg

Amanda Seyfried will portray former Theranos CEO Elizabeth Holmes in Hulu’s limited series The Dropout. Seyfried will be taking the role over from Kate McKinnon, who was originally set to portray Holmes until she exited the series in February.

The Dropout is based on the ABC News podcast of the same name about Holmes and the rise and fall of her company, Theranos. Holmes lost millions and was indicted by a federal jury in 2018 after falsely claiming to have devised blood tests that only required small amounts of blood.

Holmes recently had her wire fraud trial delayed through Aug. 31 because she is pregnant. The trial was originally set to begin in July 2020 but has been delayed multiple times due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

UMC BASEBALL STAYS UNBEATEN WITH ANOTHER VICTORY AT UPPER IOWA

umc-athletics-logo-1-12

The University of Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagle Baseball program improved to 12-0 on the year with a 10-6 victory over the Upper Iowa Peacocks in a Northern Sun Conference game in Fayette, Iowa.

UMC got on the board in the second inning when Scott Finberg (Sr. Stillwater) walked, and Jake Hjelle (Fresh. East Grand Forks) hit a two-run home run for a 2-0 lead.

The Golden Eagles added more runs in the top of the third inning. Landyn Swenson (Sr. Devils Lake) reached on an error. Ben Bryant (Soph. Fargo, ND) walked before he was picked off for the first out of the inning. After an infield fly-out, UMC was looking for another big two-out rally. Mason Ruhlman (Sr. Algonac, Mich) followed with a walk, and after a pitching change, Brock Reller (Jr. Grand Forks, ND) was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Finberg drew a walk to score a run for a 3-0 lead. Upper Iowa had another pitching change, and Hjelle took advantage of the new pitcher with a double down the leftfield lie to score two runs, and the Golden Eagles led 5-0.

Upper Iowa had a big inning in the bottom of the fifth inning. The inning got off to a great start for the Peacocks with a leadoff solo home run. Upper Iowa added five more runs on four hits and took a 6-5 lead.

UMC tied the game in the top of the sixth inning when Hjelle hit his second home run of the game, this time a solo home run, to tie the game at 6-6.

The Golden Eagles regained the lead in the top of the eighth inning when Landyn Swenson led off the inning with a walk. After a strikeout, Will Zimmerman (Sr. Park River, ND) doubled down the left-field line to score a run for a 7-6 lead. Zimmerman advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a Ruhlman single up the middle for an 8-6 lead.

UMC added some insurance runs in the ninth inning. Hjelle continued his solid day with a leadoff single and was followed by a Parker Stroh (Fresh. Grand Forks, ND) home run for a 10-6 lead.

Upper Iowa didn’t score in the bottom of the ninth inning, and UMC held on for the 10-6 victory.

UMC was led offensively by Jake Hjelle, who was 3 for 5 with two home runs, five rbi’s, and three runs scored. Parker Stroh was 2 for 2 with a home run, 2 rbi’s, and a run scored. The late relievers came up big for UMC, with Tyler Hegg (Soph. Thompson, ND), Garret Hohn (Sr. Wausau, Wis), and Brody Sorenson (Fresh. Grand Forks, ND) combining for 4.2 shutout innings while only giving up one hit to solidify the Golden Eagle victory.

UMC improves to 12-0 on the year. UMC’s schedule will get a little tougher now as they will travel to Sioux Falls, South Dakota, on Tuesday to take on the 9-3 Augustana Vikings in a Northern Sun Conference doubleheader. Augustana will be the second team the Golden Eagles have played this season with a winning record (Winona State). Upper Iowa drops to 3-8 on the year.
