Single-dose J&J COVID-19 vaccine to begin immediate roll-out after CDC approval

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advisory panel voted unanimously Sunday to recommend the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 single-shot vaccine for people 18 and older. During an emergency session, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices strongly endorsed the vaccine’s effectiveness in completely protecting against hospitalization and death. The federal government will be able to begin shipping doses, making a third COVID-19 vaccine available in the United States as early as this week. The new vaccine has a lower efficacy rate — 66% overall and 72% in the United States in preventing moderate to severe cases of COVID-19 — than the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines already in use.

Johnson & Johnson has said only a few million doses will be shipped to states in the days immediately after authorization, but production is expected to ramp up in the coming weeks, with 20 million doses due to be delivered by the end of March and 100 million total in the first half of the year. Johnson & Johnson also confirmed it will begin expanded trials for the vaccine on infants, newborns, pregnant women and people with compromised immune systems.

Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine can be kept at normal refrigerator temperatures. Pfizer’s vaccine had been stored and shipped at between minus 112 Fahrenheit to minus 76 though the FDA now says it can be held for two weeks at normal freezer temperatures. Moderna’s is kept in a home freezer.

Former President Trump hints at another presidential run as he delivers final speech at CPAC 2021

Former President Donald Trump hinted at another run for president in 2024 during his first speech since leaving office to close out the Conservative Political Action Conference on Sunday from Orlando, Fla.

Trump continued to falsely claim that he defeated President Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election and suggested that he “may even decide to beat them for a third time” while stopping short of officially declaring plans to run, saying in part, “I stand before you today to declare that the incredible journey we began together four years ago is far from over. We are gathered this afternoon to talk about the future — the future of our movement, the future of our party, and the future of our beloved country.”

Trump took aim at many members of the Republican party who sought to distance themselves from the former president especially in the wake of the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol. Trump’s public statements has been limited since he was banned from most major social media platforms in the aftermath of the Capitol riot. However despite a divide amongst Republicans, Trump dismissed speculation that he would break away and form his own party, saying, “I am not starting a new party. That was fake news. Fake news, no. Wouldn’t that be brilliant? Let’s start a new party and let’s divide our vote so that you can never win. No, we’re not interested in that. The Republican Party is united. The only division is between a handful of Washington D.C., establishment political hacks and everybody else all over the country.”

CHS KICKS OFF HARVEST FOR HUNGER CAMPAIGN MARCH 1-20

chs-northland-grain

CHS is teaming up with local farmers to fight hunger once again with the Harvest for Hunger Food, Grain, and Fund drive.  Since 2011, CHS has raised more than $5.6 million and 3.6 million pounds of food through its Country Operations business units.

Robert Staehnke, operations manager, said the corporate office will be providing some matching funds to what’s raised for food banks. “CHS and CHS County Operation started the Harvest for Hunger campaign several years ago,” said Staehnke. “It’s once again coming up this year March 1-20. All money raised and some matching contributions from our corporate offices to the local food banks.”

Harvest for Hunger will be held with curbside pickup due to COVID-19 at a variety of locations throughout the region explained Staeknke. “In our area, CHS and CHS Ag Services are teaming up once again to raise money for Harvest for Hunger,” said Staehnke. “We have several locations in northwest Minnesota and northeast North Dakota along with Ag Services. Here in Crookston, we’ll be holding a curbside pickup. We’ll be grilling burgers and brats. You can call the CHS Northland Grain office for orders or the CHS Ag Service office to put in orders. And probably expect some phone calls from some of our staff to see if you’re interested in ordering some food. It will be a free-will donation and once again, all money goes to the food bank.”

The brats or burgers will also come with macaroni salad, chips, and water. The CHS Northland Grain number is 281-2881. The CHS Ag Services number in Crookston is 281-3507.
