10-DIGIT DIALING WILL BE REQUIRED IN 218 AREA CODE WITH INTRODUCTION OF 988 NUMBER FOR NATIONAL SUICIDE PREVENTION LIFELINE

988-national-suicide-prevention-hotline

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has adopted a new three-digit number for use nationwide to reach the National Suicide and Prevention & Mental Health Crisis Lifeline. The number will be ‘988.’

All phone numbers within the ‘218’ area code will require the use of a 10-digit local phone number because ‘988’ is used within the area code explained Halstad Telephone Company CEO Mark Forseth. “Of concern to me as a Minnesota Telecom Company, it’s affecting the 218 area codes,” said Forseth. “The reason that it’s affecting is that a phone number is made up of certain parts. The 988, the first three numbers that we call an NPX is already in use in our area code. Because of that, if they don’t move us to the 10-digit dialing and someone were to call that 988 it could end up where the call wouldn’t go through for the suicide prevention hotline.”

Forseth said there will likely be some confusion because 10-digit dialing won’t be required universally, just within certain area codes. “It’s going to be some confusion definitely,” said Forseth. “It isn’t just a Halstad Telephone thing, it’s anyone with a ‘218’ area code in the ‘218’ area code area. Over in North Dakota, the whole state is ‘701’, and nowhere in North Dakota is there a ‘701-988-‘ number, so it doesn’t affect them. ‘612’ down in the cities, there is no ‘612-988-‘, so it doesn’t affect them.”

Forseth said his advice is to start dialing 10-digit numbers right away. “We have it set up in our telephone switch so people can start dialing 10-digits,” said Forsberg. “And our advice is to start dialing 10-digits. We’re telling people that you need to get used to it. If you’re busy one day or you just forget about it your call will still go through. But in October, you won’t get that grace period. Your call won’t go through and you’ll get a message that you need to dial 10-digits.”

Using a 10-digit number won’t make the call long-distance said, Forseth. “One of the first things I think is that’s us moving everything to long distance. And no, your local calls will still be your local calls, you’re just going to have to dial the 10-digit number. ‘911’ is the emergency number and ‘988’ becomes the suicide prevention number.”

UMC USES STELLAR PITCHING TO BEAT UPPER IOWA AND IMPROVE TO 11-0 ON THE YEAR

umc-athletics-logo-1-11

The University of Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagle Baseball team has relied on their offense in their first nine victories, but it was the pitching on Sunday that won the two games in a 1-0 victory in game one and a 6-1 victory in game two over the Upper Iowa Peacocks in a Northern Sun Conference doubleheader at Fayette, Iowa.

GAME ONE
Neither team had a hit in the first two innings. In the third inning, UMC recorded the first hit when Landyn Swenson (Sr. Devils Lake, ND) singled. The threat was short-lived as the Golden Eagles hit into a double play and were retired.

UMC pitcher Jake Dykhoff (Jr. Wadena) didn’t give up a hit in the first five innings. Upper Iowa finally made some contact and had back-to-back one-out singles. Dykhof got out of the jam with a double play, and the game was still scoreless after five innings of play.

Upper Iowa had another hit in the bottom of the sixth inning with one out, but the next two Peacocks were retired, and the game was still scoreless after six innings.

In the top of the seventh inning, Upper Iowa decided to change pitchers to start the inning, which proved to be a costly decision. Two-time NSIC player of the week led off the top of the seventh inning when Brock Reller (Jr. Grand Forks, ND) doubled down the right-field line. Upper Iowa changed pitchers again, and the next UMC batter flew out to the right field, but Reller advanced to third base on the play. The next UMC batter struck out for the second out of the inning and a runner still at third base. The Golden Eagles have scored 41 percent of their runs with two outs this season and their clutch two-out hitting mastery continued when Parker Stroh (Fresh. Grand Forks, ND) singled to right field to score Reller for a 1-0 lead.

Upper Iowa had a good start in the bottom of the seventh inning when the leadoff batter reached on an error. The runner advanced to second base on a wild pitch. After a ground out, the next Peacock batter walked, and Upper Iowa had runners at first and second base with one out. The next batter grounded out to second base, and the runners advanced to second and third base on the play. With two runners in scoring position, the next batter flew out to left field, and UMC held on to win the game 1-0.

UMC’s Dykhoff pitched a complete game seven innings while only giving up three hits, striking out four, and only walking one in the win to improve to 2-0 on the year. UMC only had three hits, with Landyn Swenson, Parker Stroh, and Brock Reller getting a hit apiece.

GAME TWO
After only recording three hits in the first game, it looked like it might be another tough game when the first two UMC batters struck out. UMC settled in, and Mason Ruhlman (Sr. Algonac, Mich) and Reller singled, but the next batter flew out, and the Golden Eagle threat was erased.

Neither team scored in the first two innings. In the bottom of the third inning, UMC found themselves in an unfamiliar situation, with an early deficit. Upper Iowa’s first two batters in the third were retired, only to follow with a walk and a stolen base and a single for a 1-0 lead.

UMC finally got on the board in the top of the fifth inning when Swenson doubled to left field to lead off the inning. Swenson advanced to third base after a groundout and came into score on a Will Zimmerman (Sr. Park River, ND) ground out to tie the game at 1-1. Ruhlman gave the Golden Eagles the lead with a solo home run for a 2-1 lead.
Nobody scored in the sixth inning.

In the seventh inning, UMC’s Swenson led off with a single, and after an out on a bunt attempt, Zimmerman walked. Upper Iowa made a pitching change, and that came back to hurt Upper Iowa. The baserunners advanced to second and third on a balk, and Ruhlman knocked in a run on a sacrifice fly. Reller was intentionally walked, and after another pitching change, Reller walked, and Zimmerman scored on a wild pitch for a 4-1 lead.

UMC added some insurance runs in the top of the eighth inning with a Bobby Chu (Sr. Redwood City, CA) walk, and Eli Jung (Jr. Dickinson, ND) reached on an error. After the next two batters were retired, UMC’s Zimmerman reached on a throwing error, and two runs came into score on the play for a 6-1 lead.

Upper Iowa didn’t get a hit in the final two innings, and UMC held on for a 6-1 victory to complete the sweep.

UMC had another stellar pitching performance from Matt Nelson (Soph. Afton) and Brody Sorenson (Fresh. Grand Forks, ND). Nelson pitched 6.1 innings and scattered five hits, only giving up one run while recording four strikeouts and four walks to get his second win of the year. Sorenson picked up his second save of the year, going 2.2 innings while striking out three and not allowing a hit or a run.

FOR THE GAME TWO BOX SCORE, CLICK HERE

UMC improves on their best start in program history, improving to 11-0 on the season, and they take on Upper Iowa in one game on Monday. Upper Iowa drops to 3-7 on the year.

KELSEY BILLING IS RIVERVIEW’S EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH FOR NOVEMBER 2020

kelsey-billing-eom

Not only did Kelsey Billing recently celebrate her March 10th birthday, she also celebrated her recent win as RiverView’s November 2020 Employee of the Month!

Kelsey, BSN RN, is RiverView’s Health Care Home coordinator. She joined RiverView in 2015 as an LPN in the Clinic before graduating with her Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing in December 2015. She began her current position in the Clinic as Health Care Home coordinator soon after.

Kelsey grew up in Donaldson, MN, and spent her college years in Moorhead. She and her husband Justin have two handsome boys: Logan, 3 1/2, and Jonah, 10 months. The family lives in Beltrami. Although being a mom to two little boys takes up most of Kelsey’s free time, she also enjoys being outdoors in the warm months, spending time with extended family, and traveling with Justin and friends.

“I am honored to be named EOM by my co-worker,” she shared. “I appreciate her kind words. My goal is to come to work every day with a positive attitude and the mindset to work hard and solve problems. I try to lead by example and encourage others to see the positive side of things every day. I enjoy all of the people that I work with and feel that having a great team makes every day better.”

The following comments were made in Kelsey’s honor: Kelsey is a powerhouse worker. She is an exceptional worker and nurse. There is nothing that she won’t do to make RiverView shine and help others around her. She works massive hours and bounces around all over the Clinic to fill in for others. You’d think she would be frustrated or crabby, but she is always kind, respectful, and positive in her attitude towards others. She is a great problem solver. When Kelsey says she is going to do something, you can bank on it that she follows through. She is very knowledgeable and intelligent in EVERY aspect of clinic and nursing life. She leads and inspires others every day. She is the epitome of a nurse manager.

She inspires me to work hard because she demonstrates a hard work ethic. I feel she definitely deserves recognition, even though Kelsey doesn’t realize how great she is. She is a gift and asset to RiverView.

ZACH BROWN AND ETHAN BOLL WRESTLING AT STATE – LIVE UPDATES

ethan-boll-and-zach-brown-2

The Crookston Pirate Wrestling team has two at the State Individual Wrestling tournament with Zach Brown at 120-pounds, and Ethan Boll at 195 pounds.  We will be updating the story and results throughout the day below.

ZACH BROWN –
In the first round, Zach Brown, a senior who went 34-4 on the year and is wrestling in his fourth state tournament, wrestled Ryan Jensen, a freshman from Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa, who was 33-4.
Brown shot for the leg halfway through the first period and almost got the two-point takedown, but the wrestlers were outside the circle and no points were awarded. After another minute it was a scoreless first period.
In the second period, Jensen scored the first point with an escape and that is how the second period would end with Brown trailing 1-0.
Brown started the third period in the down position and 44-seconds into the period Zach was able to escape to tie the match at 1-1. With 10-seconds left in regulation, Brown tried to counter a front headlock and almost got a takedown but the whistle blew without a point awarded, forcing an overtime period.
The first overtime was 60-seconds and neither wrestlers scored. In the second overtime (30-seconds) nobody scored, forcing a third overtime.
In the third overtime, Brown was called for stalling with 12 seconds left. Brown came close to a takedown, but time ran out forcing the fourth overtime.
In the fourth overtime session, four-seconds into it a potentially dangerous hold was whistled and they started back in the middle, and with four seconds left Jensen scored a reversal to win the match 3-1.

Brown will wrestle Lane Fink of Canby in the consolation semi-finals.  If Brown wins, he advances, if he loses he is done.

ETHAN BOLL –
Ethan Boll, a sophomore, is 36-2 on the year and received the #2 seed and will take on Carter Quam, a senior that is 27-3 on the year, in the quarterfinals.
