North Carolina judge declines to release Andrew Brown Jr. shooting videos

tmp76b94f86-d672-489c-ade7-8e88be3a1354-jpg

A North Carolina judge ruled Wednesday against publicly releasing the body-worn camera footage of the police shooting of Andrew Brown Jr., Pasquotank County Superior Court Judge Jeff Foster said immediate family members, including Brown’s son, Khalil Ferebee, and a family attorney, can view the videos within 10 days. Foster denied a media request for the footage to be publicly released, saying he’ll determine in 30 days to 45 days whether a copy of videos will be given to the family, who could then decide whether to release it to the public

There are four body cam videos and one dashboard camera video in question. The judge said the faces and name tags of the officers involved will be blurred out before the videos are shown to the family. The family said they’ve already seen one 20-second video clip of the shooting, and said it showed Brown had his hands on his steering wheel when officers opened fire on him April 21. Family attorney Chantel Cherry-Lassiter said Brown posed no threat to officers at the time he was shot, and his vehicle only stopped moving after the initial gunfire. A private autopsy released Tuesday determined that Brown was shot five times, including once in the back of the head.

FBI agents search Rudy Giuliani’s NYC apartment and office as part of Ukraine probe

tmp8dc76e38-87b9-401a-ba31-dd5956e1f173-jpg

FBI agents executed search warrants at Rudy Giuliani’s Manhattan apartment and his office to seize electronic devices Wednesday. The New York Times first reported the on the search warrants.

Federal investigators have been looking into Giuliani’s dealings with Ukrainian officials. Last December, federal prosecutors discussed whether to make a legal request for Giuliani’s electronic communications. Prosecutors for the Southern District of New York were in contact with Justice Department officials in Washington about gaining access to his emails.

Giuliani was a key figure in the events that led to former President Trump’s first impeachment, relying on Ukrainian officials and members of their parliament to try to dig up dirt about Joe Biden as he ran for president. Democrats said that there was overwhelming evidence that Trump had abused his power by pressuring Ukraine to announce investigations into Biden and his son, Hunter, while withholding almost $400 million in aid.

This story is developing….

39-year-old actress Natalie Dormer welcomed her first child, a daughter, with her partner, David Oakes, in January. Dormer shared the news during Tuesday’s episode of the That’s After Life! podcast. Dormer kept her pregnancy private. Dormer and Oakes first met as co-stars in the West End play Venus in Fur in 2017.

Said Dormer: “It’s the perfect thing to do during a pandemic — get pregnant, have a baby. I feel like I’m probably being a bit of a cliché. She’ll probably be sitting in a bar in 30 years time one day going, ‘Yeah, I’m a COVID baby.‘” Dormer said she’s “absolutely in love” with her baby girl, whom she called an “absolute joy.”

Dormer is known for playing Anne Boleyn on The Tudors and Margaery Tyrell on Game of Thrones. She most recently starred in Penny Dreadful: City of Angels.

SPORTS FEEVER – April 29, 2021

borowicz-and-girdler

I have a serious question to start out the Sports Feever column.  Is there a better cereal than Fruity Pebbles with marshmallows?   (Yes, I have the taste of a 10 year old.)  But seriously it is so good.  That was my supper Wednesday night and I loved it.  Not as good as a Wagyu steak or a filet mignon, but a close third.

The University of Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagle Baseball team dropped out of the top 25 after losing four of five games after their 10-day Covid quarantine.  The good news, they bounced back nicely with two big wins over a very good Northern State team on Wednesday afternoon.  UMC looked more like themselves and hit the snot out of the ball in both games, which is great to see.   Right now UMC is in fourth place in the NSIC with #11 ranked Minnesota State Mankato at the top.  The standings are below –

Rank – Team – NSIC record
#11 MSU-Mankato 21-5
#20 Augustana 22-8
UMC – 14-6
St. Cloud State  14-8
Winona State 17-10
Minot State 16-10
Northern State 14-13
Mary 12-12
Sioux Falls 12-15
Upper Iowa 10-17
Wayne State 9-16
Southwest MN State 9-17
Concordia-St. Paul 8-16
UM-Duluth 7-17
Bemidji State 6-21

The NSIC Tournament in 2021 is a two-week format.  The tournament will begin May 13-14 with a best of three game series hosted by the top four seeds (one 9-inning game on Thursday and Friday with another 9-inning game if necessary on Friday)

The remaining four teams move to a four-team double elimination tournament in Sioux Falls May 19-21.  Right now UMC would get a first round home playoff game against Minot State.

UMC has eight games left in the regular season and they host Bemidji State for three games this weekend and Bemidji State is in last place in the conference.  On May 5, UMC will travel to second to last place UM-Duluth for two games.  The final three games of the regular season will be at Minot State May 7 for two games and May 8 for one game.

The games at Minot State could be a preview of their first round playoffs.  I am thinking if UMC wins seven of their last eight games, they would have a chance to move into second place if Augustana loses a few games.  But the important thing for UMC is they keep getting better and are playing their best going into the playoffs.

Two area girls basketball players competed in the Minnesota High School Girls Basketball Coaches Association All-Star game last weekend.   Crookston’s Emma Borowicz and Red Lake Falls’ Clara Girdler.  Emma had a couple of three-pointers and several steals and assists.  Clara might have had the highlight shot of the day when she made a half-court shot to end the game.  So her last ever high school shot was a made half-court shot in an all-star game.  Pretty cool stuff.

We here happy to sponsor Emma in the tournament, as we have for many other Pirate basketball players that have been fortunate enough to play in the game.  It is a fast yes everytime.  We received a nice email from the Borowicz family and have it below –

Dear Chris and the KROX team,

Thank you for supporting Emma throughout her athletic career at Crookston. The amount of miles, late nights, and the time you spend away from home is remarkable just to cover Pirate sports. You do a wonderful job and have such a great following. By covering the Pirate games and putting them on YouTube, you made this past COVID basketball season one to remember! We had several family members in Arizona, Nevada, and California that didn’t miss a game! Thank you for sponsoring Emma so she could play in this all star game.  It was such a cool experience getting to see her play with some girls that will be attending North Carolina State,  South Dakota State, Nebraska Omaha, and many other area colleges next year! She also got the opportunity to gaurd some D-1 level players which was fun to watch!

Emma got to compete against Claire Girdler from Red Lake Falls. Claire also put together a nice game and she ended her high school basketball career by making a half court shot at the end of the game.

Regards,

The Borowicz Family

UMC’S TIM DUDLEY RECEIVES THE HORACE T. MORSE AWARD

tim-dudley

Chemistry Department of Math, Science, and Technology Timothy Dudley, Ph.D. teaches general chemistry lecture and lab courses at the University of Minnesota Crookston. Dudley, committed to providing a quality educational experience in chemistry for his students, is a dedicated adviser to students in the health science and medical lab science programs. His research focus is in computational organometallic chemistry but engages undergraduate students in both computational and experimental research projects.

“We were very happy to hear that Dr. Tim Dudley now joins the ranks of recipients of the Horace T. Morse Award at UMN-Crookston, which is the highest accolade given for undergraduate instruction in the University of Minnesota System.  Dr. Dudley serves a wide variety of pre-professional students in his chemistry courses and is known for his friendly demeanor, focus on accessibility, and innovative approaches to teaching complex subject matter to a diverse audience of undergraduate students.  We are thrilled to have a member of the Math, Science, and Technology Department at the Crookston campus as a recipient of this prestigious award,” said Anthony Kern, Ph.D, Math, Science & Technology, and Agriculture and Natural Resources Division Head.

POLK COUNTY BRIDGE CONSTRUCTION UPDATES

climax-bridge

Residents of Crookston and anyone else interested will have an opportunity to watch the construction along Fisher Avenue with an online video stream of the work. Construction is supposed to begin around June 1 and be complete by September 1.

Polk County Engineer Rich Sanders said some projects are of more interest to the public, so a camera can help keep people informed about the work’s progress. “Every once in a while, you have a project in which you really want to keep the residents informed of what’s going on,” said Sanders. “We used a construction camera back on the Thompson Bridge, and that worked really well not only for residents but for our staff to review what’s going on out on the project. We’re going to be renting a camera from EarthCam and setting it up out by the arena. The public will be able to go on a website and review what that camera is showing. You can see how construction is going, how traffic is flowing if we’re allowing traffic on the road, and hopefully, see a productive and efficient construction project happen.”

The camera rental and streaming cost $18,719.16. More on the Fisher Avenue reconstruction is available here.

BRIDGES
Important milestones are also being reached for bridge work in Polk County. Recently, the Polk County Commissioners approved a cooperative construction agreement with Traill County in North Dakota to replace the Climax Bridge.

Sanders said the bridge should be completed in 2024. “Polk County and Traill County will be working together to replace the Climax Bridge in 2024,” said Sanders. “For them to start the administrative of doing the survey, hydraulics, all the stuff the needs to be done to get the bridge replaced because they’re going to be the lead on the Climax Bridge, we did an agency agreement so that they can bill us for our half of the work. The consultant will start working, and we’re hoping to have construction happening by fall of 2023, summer of 2024.”

The County also partnered with Traill and Grand Forks counties by applying for funding from each county’s U.S. Representative for additional bridge projects at Nielsville and Merrifield. “With the new congress and the process the house is laying out, they are bringing back earmarks which is money that each representative would get to spend money in their own district,” said Sanders. “Applications were due last week in Minnesota for Representative (Michelle) Fischbach and on Monday, for Representative (Kelly) Armstrong in North Dakota. Polk and Traill County went together and applied to both representatives for the Nielsville Bridge as another option than the BUILD grants we’ve been applying for. Then, Polk and Grand Forks County went together to apply to both for the Merrifield Crossing just south of Grand Forks, East Grand Forks.”

Finally, bids were awarded for the resurfacing and maintenance of several township bridges across the county. “Every year, Polk County gets township bridge dollars through the gas tax we can spend,” said Sanders. “This year, we put together plans for Brandsvold, Grove Park, Hammond, two in Euclid, and one in Esther that were all funded through that program. We let bids on April 9, and Taggart Excavating and Septic out of Newfolden got the Brandsvold, Grove Park, and Hammond project. Triple D Construction out of Plummer got the two in Euclid and one in Esther. Those projects will be done this summer and hopefully completed by beet harvest.”
