United States shuts down former-secret Guantanamo prison, moving prisoners

The U.S. military said Sunday that a once-secret unit within the Guantanamo Bay detention center has been closed and the prisoners moved to another facility on the American base in Cuba. The prisoners at Camp 7 were transferred to a facility adjacent to where the other detainees on the base are held as part of what U.S. Southern Command said in a statement was an effort to “increase operational efficiency and effectiveness.” Officials have previously said about 14 men were held in Camp 7. There are 40 prisoners at Guantanamo.

Camp 7 opened in December 2006 for prisoners previously held in a network of clandestine CIA detention facilities, often referred to as “black sites,” where they were subjected to brutal interrogation techniques. The military ran it under an agreement with CIA, and has long refused to even acknowledge the location of Camp 7 on the base and has never allowed journalists to see the inside of the facility.  Among those held at Camp 7 were the five prisoners charged with war crimes for their alleged roles planning and providing logistical support for the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Atlanta Braves vs. Washington Nationals game on Monday postponed due to COVID-19 outbreak

tmp1740a474-13ed-45db-a441-7fc599326cd6-jpg

The Washington Nationals scheduled game against the Atlanta Braves for Monday has been postponed, with a plan for the teams to face each other Tuesday, which would be Washington’s first game of the year as it deals with COVID-19 issues. The Nationals’ season-opening series against the New York Mets was postponed.

There were 11 unavailable players for the Nationals because of four players in isolation due to positive tests and seven players in quarantine. In addition, two staff members were in quarantine. Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo was unsure if the entire series against the Braves would be played, and also told reporters a “majority” of the unavailable players would have made the 26-man Opening Day roster.

MLB’s health and safety protocols for the 2021 season state that “individuals who test positive will be required to isolate for a minimum of 10 days, receive appropriate care and monitoring from the Club medical staff, and be cleared by the Joint Committee and the individual’s team physician, following a mandatory cardiac evaluation and a determination that the individual no longer presents a risk of infection to others.”

MINNESOTA SMALL BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT CENTERS PARTNER WITH FIRST CHILDREN’S FINANCE TO SUPPORT MINNESOTA’S CHILD CARE INDUSTRY

Under a partnership agreement announced Friday, First Children’s Finance will operate as the first statewide satellite center in the Minnesota Small Business Development Centers (SBDC) Network – providing specialized business and financial assistance to child care businesses across Minnesota at no cost to the businesses. Minnesota SBDC is part of the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED).

“Without access to affordable child care, parents can’t earn a living, businesses can’t recruit reliable workers, and children miss out on early educational opportunities,” said DEED Commissioner Steve Grove. “This has never been more apparent than during the pandemic – and we look forward to First Children’s Finance and the SBDC Network helping to increase the number of child care providers in Minnesota and improving their success as businesses.”

“This is historic in that we’ve never created a statewide satellite center before in the SBDC Network,” said Bruce Strong, SBDC State Director. “Now anyone – anywhere in the state – who needs help with creating a new child care center or improving operations in an existing one will have access to the combined expertise of SBDC business consultants and experts from First Children’s Finance who specialize in consulting and financing specifically in the child care industry, all at no cost to them.”

“With consultants located in every region of the state, First Children’s Finance has 30 years of experience helping Minnesota child care providers navigate the business side of child care,” said Suzanne Pearl, Minnesota Director at First Children’s Finance. “We are thrilled to partner with the MN SBDC Network to reach even more of these small businesses and as they provide the foundation for our economic recovery.”

The child care sector in Minnesota has been losing programs in recent years, and the number of care providers and available child care spaces in Minnesota dropped significantly during 2020.

First Children’s Finance is a nonprofit community development financial institution which seeks to increase the availability, affordability, and quality of early care and education by providing financial and business development assistance to high-quality child care businesses serving low- and moderate-income families and by connecting the child care businesses with public and private resources.

The statewide network of Small Business Development Centers (SBDCs) provides professional expertise and a wide range of business assistance and guidance to pre-venture, startups, and established businesses. The network includes nine regional centers across the state as well as satellite centers. Funding comes from the U. S. Small Business Administration and the State of Minnesota. All consulting services are delivered at no cost to the businesses.

On the afternoon of March 25, a Red Lake County deputy investigated a suspicious vehicle they observed parked in a vacant farmyard in Gervais Township northeast of Red Lake Falls. The deputy discovered three adults and one small child were at that location.
One of the adults was a male, Wayde Richard Stallmo (55 of East Grand Forks). The other two were females, Melissa Marie Pederson (40 of East Grand Forks) and Madison Lynn Bouvette (22 of Grand Forks).
All of the individuals admitted they did not know the property owner, nor did they have permission to be at that property. When the parties were searched, marijuana was found in possession of both females, but it did not appear that anything had been stolen or disturbed at the farmyard.
Stallmo was cited for misdemeanor trespassing. Pederson was cited for misdemeanor trespassing, possession of a small amount of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Bouvette was cited for trespassing and possession of a small amount of marijuana.
All three parties were allowed to leave the scene, and they were told not to return without the owner’s permission. According to the Red Lake County Sheriff’s report, “It was apparent that more serious crimes were likely prevented by the deputy’s keen observations that afternoon.”
