SCOTT’S TRUE VALUE DONATE HEALTH AND SAFETY PRODUCTS TO CROOKSTON SCHOOL DISTRICT

scotts-hardware-hank-donation

Crookston’s Scott’s True Value in partnership with the True Value Foundation, is providing free health and safety products to Crookston’s Independent School District 593 through the Educational Heroes Safety Campaign.

To ensure the health and safety of students, teachers, administrators and staff, True Value is donating over $500 worth of hand sanitizer, and germicidal cleaner.

At the beginning of the pandemic, True Value Manufacturing retooled its EasyCare paint production facility in Cary, Illinois, to produce FDA-approved hand sanitizer and other essential cleaning products to meet unprecedented nationwide consumer demand for health and cleaning essentials.

In August of last year, the True Value Foundation decided to go even further to address growing public need for these products as schools reopened by launching the Educational Heroes Safety Campaign.  This collaborative effort between the Company and its independent retailers aims to keep America’s kids learning while keeping all frontline educational heroes safe.

DNR REMINDS LAKE PROPERTY OWNERS TO MAKE SURE NEW DOCKS MEET STATE REQUIREMENTS

oxwv1vw_400x400-17

Before installing or investing in a new dock or dock platform, lakeshore owners should check to ensure it will meet state requirements. Lake service provider businesses should also review the regulations, to ensure the equipment they sell or install is in compliance.

Dock and dock platform size are regulated in Minnesota by the Department of Natural Resources to provide a balance between the protection and utilization of public waters. Docks and dock platforms allow riparian landowners to access and enjoy public waters.

However, oversized dock systems can have a variety of negative impacts, including interfering with other riparian owners, presenting safety and freedom of navigation issues for boaters, shading out important aquatic plants, and eliminating critical habitat where fish spawn, feed, grow and find shelter from predators.

A dock is a narrow platform or structure extending from the shoreline out into the water intended for mooring watercraft and to provide access to deeper water for recreational activities. A dock may not be more than 8 feet wide and may not be combined with other similar structures to create a wider dock.

A modest platform at the lake end of a dock is allowed under certain conditions. A single, temporary platform up to 120 square feet measured separately from the access dock, or 170 square feet including the area of the adjacent access dock, is allowed if the following conditions exist:

  • The access dock must be 5 feet wide or less, and
  • The dock must be on a lake with a shoreland classification of general development or recreational development.

In addition to size requirements, dock owners are encouraged to design and locate their dock to avoid interfering with their neighbor’s use of the water. A dock cannot be longer than needed to achieve its intended use, including reaching navigable water depths.

Docks must not obstruct navigation or be a water safety hazard and must allow for the free flow of water beneath them. A dock should not close off any part of the lake to other users and must comply with any local ordinances.

Minnesota’s current dock and dock platform regulations have been in existence for many years, but not everyone is familiar with them. Lake residents might assume that if another lakeshore owner has a dock with a large platform, it meets the state’s rules. Sometimes, that isn’t the case.

A helpful document about state dock requirements is available on the DNR websiteLocal DNR hydrologists can assist lake home owners with questions about docks.

The DNR website also contains links to other helpful information for lakeshore owners about shoreline erosion control and restoration projects to help improve water quality and fish and wildlife habitat.

GOVERNOR WALZ PROCLAIMS MAY AS COMMUNITY ACTION MONTH

tri-valley-5

In Minnesota, Community Action Agencies have worked tirelessly over the past year to meet some of the most pressing needs caused by COVID-19, including providing rental, mortgage and utility assistance, food delivery and socially-distanced food distribution events, and broadband and technology support to name a few.

The Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 authorized the creation of Community Action Agencies to provide opportunities for self-sufficiency and success for those with limited incomes. Since then, Community Action Agencies have made essential contributions to individuals and families in Minnesota, and across the U.S., by providing them with innovative and cost-effective services over the past half-century. Gov. Tim Walz proclaimed May as “Community Action Month.”

Community Action Agencies serve 99 percent of all U.S. counties with essential services to help families achieve financial stability. All agencies are locally controlled and represented by the private, public, and low-income sectors of the community.

Tri-Valley is a member of Minnesota Community Action Partnership, the National Community Action Partnership and the Community Action Network, which was born out of the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964. Tri-Valley is a non-profit community action agency headquartered in Crookston, Minn. In existence since 1965, Tri-Valley provides services in 74 counties in Minnesota and Eastern North Dakota. The mission of Tri-Valley is to provide opportunities to improve the quality of life for people and communities. For more information on services offered and job opportunities at Tri-Valley, visit the website at www.tvoc.org.

UMC GOLDEN EAGLES BASEBALL IS IN MINOT FOR LAST GAME OF THE REGULAR SEASON

After the University of Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagles suffered a couple losses earlier in the week at Minnesota-Duluth, they continued into the last weekend of the regular season needed some wins at Minot State!! But, Minot State also battling for a top four spot in the Northern Sun Conference standings to get a home site for the Northern Sun Conference Championship, came up with a pair of crucial wins over UMC 4-1 and 19-0!! The wins by Minot State improved their conference record to 22-11 and vaulted them into third place tie in the conference with Minnesota State-Mankato and Augustana University in first and second respectively. UMC is 17-10 in the conference after the two losses and in fifth place and appears to have cost them a home site advantage for the playoffs.  It appears that UMC can’t finish ahead of Minot State even with a win in their last games of the season today and with St. Cloud State’s games this weekend against Southwest Minnesota State cancelled because of covid protocol, UMC can not get ahead of the Huskies as far as percentage is concerned. There is a chance that UMC and Minot State could play again, this time in the first round of the playoffs. The pairings should be announced tomorrow. Game time for today’s final regular season game is NOON at Corbett Field in Minot.
