Two University of Minnesota Crookston Ag Education students were recently recognized by The Minnesota Agricultural Education Leadership Council (MAELC) as two 2021 Minnesota Teach Ag Ambassadors. UMC Sophomores, Britton Fuglseth of Fertile, and Faith Kowalke of Sartell, were chosen along with four others from Minnesota institutions that train future agriculture teachers.

This program works to address the demand for agriculture teachers and was developed by Minnesota’s State Teach Ag Results (STAR) committee, which is coordinated by MAELC. STAR is a component of the National Teach Ag Campaign.

The purpose of the Minnesota Teach Ag Ambassador program is to utilize current collegiate students majoring in Agricultural Education-Teacher Licensure to represent the Agricultural Education profession and encourage others to teach agriculture.

“As a Minnesota Teach Ag Ambassador, I am most looking forward to seeing that little spark of intrigue in students grow as they listen and learn more about the endless possibilities and priceless takeaways of being an agricultural educator,” said Faith Kowalke.

Individuals were chosen for the program; two from each Minnesota institution that trains future agriculture teachers:
Anna Bucketine, University of Minnesota – Twin Cities)
Britton Fuglseth (University of Minnesota – Crookston)
Faith Kowalke  (University of Minnesota – Crookston)
Leah Schmid (Southwest Minnesota State University)
Kaylea Van Regenmorter (Southwest Minnesota State University)
Emilee Xayanourom (University of Minnesota – Twin Cities)

“Agriculture is a never-ending occupation that serves as the backbone of our world and includes a diverse set of occupations. It is not just farmers and ranchers but also our beekeepers, food scientists, agronomists, soil engineers, botanists, biologists, wildlife officers, and the list goes on. The cool thing about agricultural education is that it gets to prepare and build those people… the next generation and because of that, I can’t think of a better occupation to go into. As a Minnesota Teach Ag Ambassador, I am so thrilled and excited to get to spread the word of how amazing this occupation is and invite more students to become a part of it,” said Fuglseth.

This class of Teach Ag Ambassadors will serve through January 2022. Along with supporting National Teach Ag Day activities on September 16, 2021 the ambassadors will spend their term encouraging high school and postsecondary students to consider a career in teaching agriculture. The ambassadors will use several different outlets to accomplish this task including social media, email, workshops, booths, and presentations, where they will answer questions about Minnesota Teach Ag and agricultural education.

UMC BASEBALL IN THE FINAL WEEK OF THE REGULAR SEASON STARTING AT DULUTH

Back at the end of April, the University of Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagles Baseball team went on a four game losing streak! No worry, since the fourth loss to St. Cloud State, the Golden Eagles have won five games in a row including sweeping Bemidji State this last weekend at home to improve their overall record to 22-6 and their 17-6 record in the Northern Sun Conference that slipped the Golden Eagles into the second spot in the conference behind Minnesota State-Mankato. UMC will complete their regular season with five road games starting this afternoon at Minnesota-Duluth for a doubleheader. UMD is 13-22 on the year and 10-19 in the conference which has the Bulldogs in 12th place in the conference currently and they do have a slim chance to get into the top eight, which qualifies for the Northern Sun Conference Champions. The doubleheader today starts at 1:30 PM. UMC will finish off the regular season at Minot State for two games on Friday and one game on Saturday. The NSIC Tournament will get underway on May 13-14.

Legal team for Derek Chauvin allege jury misconduct, request new trial

The legal team for former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin has filed a motion in a Minneapolis court requesting a new trial on multiple grounds, including jury misconduct. Chauvin was convicted of murdering George Floyd last month.

Chauvin’s attorney says the former officer should have a new trial in the “interests of justice; abuse of discretion that deprived the Defendant of a fair trial; prosecutorial and jury misconduct; errors of law at trial; and a verdict that is contrary to law.”  Attorney Eric Nelson writes in the filing: “The jury committed misconduct, felt threatened or intimidated, felt race-based pressure during the proceedings, and/or failed to adhere to instructions during deliberations, in violation of Mr. Chauvin’s constitutional rights to due process and a fair trial.” Nelson also claims that the court failed to sequester the jury during the trial, which resulted in their exposure “to prejudicial publicity regarding the trial during the proceedings, as well as jury intimidation and potential fear of retribution among jurors.”

Chauvin was found guilty April 20 of second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter in the death of Floyd. He is scheduled to be sentenced on June 25 and faces up to 40 years in prison, though Minnesota sentencing guidelines suggest he’s more likely to receive up to 15 years due to his lack of a prior criminal record.

President Biden aims for 70% of American adults vaccinated by July 4

On Tuesday, President Biden set a new vaccination goal to deliver at least one dose to 70% of adult Americans by the 4th of July. The new goal comes as demand for vaccines has dropped off markedly nationwide, with some states leaving more than half their vaccine doses unused. Biden is calling for states to make vaccines available on a walk-in basis and will direct many pharmacies to do the same.  At the White House, Biden said: “You do need to get vaccinated. Even if your chance of getting seriously ill is low, why take the risk? It could save your life or the lives of somebody you love.”

Biden’s goal includes delivering at least the first shot to 181 million adults and fully vaccinating 160 million. More than 56% of adult Americans have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine and nearly 105 million are fully vaccinated. The U.S. is currently administering first doses at a rate of about 965,000 per day — half the rate of three weeks ago. “I’d like to get it 100%, but I think realistically we can get to that place between now and July Fourth,” Biden said.

Biden’s push comes as his administration has shifted away from setting a target for the U.S. to reach “herd immunity,” instead focusing on delivering as many shots into arms as possible. Officials said Biden’s vaccination target would result in a significant reduction in COVID-19 cases heading into the summer. The Food and Drug Administration is expected authorize the Pfizer vaccine for adolescents aged 12-15 by early next week and the White House is developing plans to speed vaccinations to that age group, hoping to deliver doses to pediatricians’ offices and other trusted locations, with the aim of getting as many adolescents vaccinated by the start of the next school year.
