NORTHWESTERN MENTAL HEALTH CENTER OFFERS TIPS FOR TAKING CARE OF YOUR MENTAL HEALTH

shannon-kronlund

Mental health is all around us, but what exactly is mental health? Mental health is a person’s general sense of emotional, psychological, and cognitive wellbeing. Everyone has mental health every day, but it’s often ignored unless something is going seriously wrong. The best way to prevent that is to pay attention to your mental health even when you feel okay or even good.

“Taking care of ourselves is not selfish. In fact, it is just the opposite. Caring for our mental health helps us to meet our full potential in all areas of our life,” says Shannon Kronlund, Director of Outpatient Services at Northwestern Mental Health Center. “When we care for our own emotional and social health, we increase our resiliency and capacity to help others and ourselves.”

Notice how your mental health is constantly changing. Yesterday might have been a better day than today, and that’s okay. Part of being human is moving with your emotions and knowing when something isn’t going exactly how you want it to. Check-in with yourself and reach out to your friends and family for help when you need to take some time for your mental health or don’t know what to do.

Here are a few tips for taking care of yourself:

  • Accept yourself as you are.
  • Write down your daily accomplishments rather than, or in addition to, your to-do list. Celebrate those accomplishments.
  • Create a self-care plan to support your mental well-being in your everyday life. Finding joy, connecting with others, helping others, learning something new, and finding daily spiritual connections can help us flourish.
  • Learn how to cope with stress with practical exercises like taking a few slow deep breaths, focusing on each of your senses, and trying to be fully present in what you’re doing.
  • Make small goals. Taking time for yourself is not something that will happen overnight.
  • Get out in nature, be present with your surroundings.

Half of all U.S. adults have received COVID-19 vaccination as of this week

Half of all adults in the United States are expected to have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 this week, it was announced at a briefing of the White House COVID-19 Response Team. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says almost 130 million U.S. adults are now fully vaccinated — or about 49.8% of the adult population. Earlier this month, President Joe Biden announced a goal of 70% of Americans having at least one dose by July 4.

CDC data shows that at least 25 states and Washington, D.C., have fully vaccinated at least half of their adult residents. Early on Tuesday, Moderna announced that its vaccine is safe and effective in children between the ages of 12 and 17. If approved by regulators next month, it would be the second coronavirus vaccine available in the United States to children.

Kristen Clarke confirmed as first black woman to lead Justice Department Civil Rights division

shutterstock_1481157686-jpg

The Senate confirmed Kristen Clarke as the first Black woman to lead the Justice Department’s Civil Rights division on Tuesday with a 51-48 vote following an additional procedural step as Republicans objected to her nomination.

Clarke is a first-generation American whose parents immigrated from Jamaica West Indies, and she earned degrees from Harvard University and Columbia University School of Law before working as a trial attorney for the Civil Rights division’s criminal and voting sections during the George W. Bush administration. She also served as co-director of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund’s voting rights group and most recently as president and executive director of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law.

During her confirmation hearing, Clarke said she does not support defunding the police but does support “finding strategies to ensure that law enforcement can carry out their jobs more safely and effectively and channeling resources to emotional health treatment and other severely under-resourced areas.” Clarke’s nomination comes one year after George Floyd was killed by former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, Biden pushed for Clarke’s confirmation last month when Chauvin was convicted on murder charges in Floyd’s death, saying she and Associate Attorney General Vanita Gupta would “root out the unconstitutional policing and reform our criminal justice system.”

Kevin Spacey cast in first film since sexual assault allegations

shutterstock_508740076-jpg

Kevin Spacey has been cast in his first film role since sexual misconduct allegations against him emerged in late 2017.  Spacey is set to star opposite Vanessa Redgrave in “L’uomo Che Disegno Dio” (translated to “The Man Who Drew God” in English), directed by her husband Franco Nero.  Nero is best known as an actor in films like “Django Unchained,” “Die Hard 2,” and “John Wick: Chapter 2.”  The film is reportedly about a blind artist who acquires a godlike ability to draw portraits of people based on only hearing their voices, skyrocketing him to fame. Spacey will appear in a small role in the movie as a police detective, while Redgrave will be making a cameo as a piano teacher.

“The Man Who Drew God” will mark Spacey’s first big-screen role in nearly four years since Anthony Rapp alleged that Spacey made an inappropriate sexual advance on him when he was 14. More than a dozen more alleged victims came forward, including filmmaker Tony Montana, as well as Richard Dreyfuss’ son Harry. The allegations cost Spacey his role as President Frank Underwood in Netflix’s “House of Cards.” In 2018, Spacey was charged with indecent assault involving an alleged 2016 incident with a teenager on Nantucket Island in Massachusetts. He pled not guilty, and the charges were later dropped. The Los Angeles District Attorney’s office declined to file charges against Spacey for two other alleged incidents.

Motorists on Highway 59 between Winger and Erskine can expect a short-term detour for Polk County Road 41 as construction resumes.  The project includes resurfacing Highway 59 from Winger to Erskine as well as pedestrian improvements in Winger.

POLK COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE IS TRAINING THIS WEEK, AND THEY’RE READY TO PATROL THE LAKES

download-2-1-4

The Polk County Commissioners met on Tuesday morning at the Polk County Transfer Station.

Polk County Sheriff James Tadman gave his monthly report and said they are starting to see more traffic.  “It is getting busier.  More people are getting out and doing more activities,” said Sheriff Tadman. “The activity is up, but we have also been operating our Towards Zero Death and working with the Minnesota State Patrol, Crookston Police, and East Grand Forks.  Opening fishing had perfect weather, and a lot of people were out, but there were no complaints and no accidents on the lakes, so very nice.”

Tadman said they are getting ready for the busy lakes season with Memorial Day coming up. “Through the years of getting out there and doing the education and letting people see us has really helped deter people that want to get wild on the lake,” said Sheriff Tadman. “The lakes have gotten so busy.  Maple Lake has just grown, and the boats that are coming there, and you don’t have to have a cabin there with the boat launch on East Shore.  Union Lake has exploded too.  People are getting out and enjoying themselves more, and that is no problem, and we don’t want to go out and wreck anybody’s fun time.  We are continuing to utilize the grant to have deputies out on the lake.”

Tadman said they are doing their state-mandated training this week, and they were at the gun range until after midnight Tuesday morning.  “Each year, we go through the state’s post-mandated training, and that assures that each officer that carries a license in the State of Minnesota has so many hours of post-mandated training,” said Sheriff Tadman. “It covers all of our use of force, which is our defensive tactics, all the tools we utilize on our belt. Our taser, handcuffs, batons, and our firearms which is a rifle, shotgun, and handguns. We have adverse weather, lowlight shooting, and we have to utilize three weapons or transition to them.”

Commissioner Gary Willhite asked Sheriff Tadman if they had any respect issues, and Tadman said they are lucky to be in Polk County and northwest Minnesota. “We are getting a lot of thank you’s from people towards law enforcement.  This is a great place to work, and I have always said that about Polk County.  Not just Polk County, but everywhere up here,” said Sheriff Tadman. “We do our best to provide for the citizens of Polk County.  We are here to serve the citizens and keep them safe.”

The Commissioners approved a motor grader rental quote from Ziegler Cat at $30,200 per year for seven years.
