With extreme fire risk conditions across northern Minnesota today, the National Weather Service has expanded a Red Flag Warning to include the following counties: Kittson, Marshall, Norman, Pennington, Polk, Red Lake, Roseau, Becker, Beltrami, Cass, Clay, Clearwater, Cook, Crow Wing, Hubbard, Itasca, Koochiching, Lake, Lake of The Woods, Mahnomen, Otter Tail, St. Louis, Wadena, and Wilkin.

A Red Flag Warning means the area is experiencing critical weather conditions that are ideal for wildfire, including strong winds and low humidity. Do not burn while the Red Flag Warning remains in effect and check any burning done recently to ensure the fire is out. Any spark could become a wildfire under Red Flag conditions.

The Red Flag Warning expires at 9 p.m.

Famed criminal defense attorney F. Lee Bailey dies at age 87

shutterstock_564829918-jpg

High-profile criminal defense attorney F. Lee Bailey, who represented O.J. Simpson at his trial in 1995, has died at age 87.  Bailey’s death was confirmed to The Associated Press by Peter Horstmann, who worked with Bailey as an associate in the same law office for seven years.

Bailey served as one of Simpson’s attorneys, which ended in his acquittal in the 1994 murders of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend Ronald Goldman.  In tribute on his Twitter page, Simpson called Bailey, “a great friend,” and “one of the great lawyers of our time.  He was smart, sharp as ever.  F. Lee Bailey, maybe the best lawyer of our time, of this generation, but a great guy. God bless his family. God bless you, Lee. You will be missed by me.”

Bailey’s legal career lasted more than four decades. In the 1960s, he secured a reversal of Dr. Sam Sheppard’s conviction in the murder of his pregnant wife and an acquittal at his second trial. He also represented Albert DeSalvo, who claimed to be the Boston Strangler, and Patricia Hearst. Bailey’s other high-profile clients included Capt. Ernest Medina, charged in connection with the My Lai massacre during the Vietnam War.

President Biden offers tax concessions on infrastructure package with Republicans

shutterstock_1967683090-jpg

President Joe Biden offered to narrow his $1.7 trillion infrastructure package in a concession to Republicans. Biden put forth a new $1 trillion proposal to Sen. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., who is leading the Senate Republicans’ negotiations with Biden on the deal.

Biden initially proposed a $2 trillion package that included two parts — the American Jobs Plan and the American Families Plan — to focus on modernizing transportation infrastructure, including roads, bridges and airports. He also sought to boost the electric vehicle market, expand broadband Internet access, upgrade schools and affordable housing, increase job training, and care for elderly and disabled Americans.  He sought to pay for the package by raising the tax rates on corporations and wealthier Americans, however Republicans have countered with narrower proposals.

Biden’s new proposal is half what he originally sought to pass, but still includes nearly four times the new spending Republicans wanted in their own counteroffer. Capito and Biden were expected to speak again Friday.

Production to begin this summer for “Wedding Crashers” sequel featuring original cast

shutterstock_141384607-jpg

Vince Vaughn, Owen Wilson, Isla Fisher and Rachel McAdams are set to reprise their roles for Wedding Crashers 2 for HBO Max.

The original film starred Vaughn and Wilson as Jeremy and John, divorce mediators who spent their free time crashing wedding receptions.  According to reports, the sequel to the comedy film will start filming in August in Puerto Rico, and along with Vaughn and Wilson, both actresses from the first film–Rachel McAdams and Isla Fisher — will be returning.

Vaughn had previously teased the sequel back in November 2020, saying to Entertainment Tonight: “Owen and I and the director of Crashers have been talking for the first time seriously [about] a sequel to that movie. So there has been an idea that is pretty good. So we are talking about that in the early stages.” Vince said that the film was a “fun movie to make,” adding, “It’s always fun to make people laugh and go to work with people that are funny.”

CROOKSTON CITY ADMINISTRATOR AMY FINCH ASKS CITIZENS TO FILL OUT COMMUNITY SURVEY AND DOES Q AND A ON CHEDA

amy-finch-2-5

Crookston City Administrator Amy Finch is encouraging people to take the community survey that they are conducting to get as much input as possible.  She also does a Q and A on the Crookston Housing and Economic Development Authority.  Below is a press release/letter to the editor –

I want to take a moment to provide you with some information that I hope you will find helpful. In my time here I have noticed certain concerns, some of which existed before I came. The community survey we offered is a way for you to help us recognize your concerns and understand the direction you would like to see our city go. I challenge each of you to complete this survey and step up to work together with each other for a better Crookston. I do not assume to know the direction you wish to see our community grow and all of your responses and comments will be embraced as we work to develop strategic short- and long-term goals for our Crookston community.

Community Survey
As of yesterday, we have received 417 total responses to the community survey. This is awesome, but let’s do even better than that! Hard copy surveys will be available upon request through 06/07/2021 and will be delivered to you with a prepaid envelope. One survey per person will be delivered. Surveys are due by 11:59 pm CST on Wednesday 06/09/2021 (online must be submitted by the deadline listed and hard copies must be postmarked by 06/09/2021). A locked drop box will be available at City Hall for drop-off as well. Drop-offs are due by 4:30 pm on 06/09/2021. We encourage all Crookston residents to complete the survey. The survey can be found on the City of Crookston’s Facebook page, on the QR code below, and at this link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/CityofCrookston

Q & A
It is also important to note that there are many questions circulating throughout the community after the latest City Council meeting and I want to address the most common questions I have heard below. The questions and answers below are aligned with the proposal made to the City Council and assume the passing of each recommendation. Please come and voice your concerns, questions, or thoughts at the public hearings scheduled for the Monday 06/14/2021 City Council meeting held at the Crookston High School auditorium.

Q: Is the Housing and Redevelopment Authority (HRA) going away if the Crookston Housing & Economic Development Authority (CHEDA) is dissolved?
A: No, the proposal includes the dissolution of CHEDA, transferring economic development duties under the City as the Community Development Department, and the re-establishment of the HRA.

Q: Will tenants using services and housing provided through the HRA (currently administered through CHEDA) lose access to services and/or housing?
A: No. The intent is to continue to offer uninterrupted services without lessening the quality of services offered.

Q: Will Oak Court residents who pay June rent be able to prove payment and avoid eviction in July if the HRA is under new authority?
A: An issue with payment records is not anticipated and records should remain intact and transfer under the new authority. As with any payments made, we encourage residents to obtain a receipt for payment.

Q: Will the current CHEDA Executive Director assume the Community Development Director position?
A: Not automatically. Economic Development is vital to the success of a community and an external search would be undertaken in which any qualified candidate would be encouraged to apply.

Q: Will the current housing staff retain their positions?
A: The proposal does not address this at the current time. Once a new HRA board is seated, this issue would be reviewed and a decision would be made at that time. It will be the recommendation to once again have the housing staff office out of Oak Court to be readily available to tenants and to improve the service provided.

Q: Will Oak Court close, leaving current residents without housing?
A: No. The proposal is to re-establish the HRA as an independent entity to serve our housing needs in the community. City leaders would never suggest the displacement of tenants residing in housing offered through the HRA.

Q: Who did the City Administrator talk to and work with to develop this proposal? A: The City Administrator sought the assistance of the City Attorney to review Minnesota statutes and relied on previous experience working for a City that housed the city’s economic development functions under the Community Development Department of the city.

Q: Why?
A: In my time here, I have made it a priority to understand processes and look for ways to be more efficient and provide better service to our community. The structure of the current economic development function is inefficient, has gaps in communication and information, and duplicates efforts on several fronts. A more in- depth presentation will be provided at the City Council meeting on Monday 06/14/2021 held at the Crookston High School auditorium. In conclusion, I do recognize change can be uncomfortable and even scary at times. I am once again pleading to you, citizens, Councilmembers, interested parties, to let me know when you have concerns. I am here to work for you and to provide clarification, answers to your questions, hear your concerns and ideas. Please reach out to me or your council person at any time so we can help address your issues.

I will leave you with a quote that is an important reminder to all of us. Be the ones we’ve been waiting for. “Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time.  We are the ones we’ve been waiting for.  We are the change that we seek.”   Barack Obama

Sincerely,
Amy Finch
City Administrator

FUNDRAISER FOR THE JACKSON SEIBEL FAMILY WILL BE HELD JUNE 8 AT THE CROOKSTON INN

bengston-family

A spaghetti feed and silent auction fundraiser will be held for Jackson Seibel, son of Jess and Garett Bengston on Tuesday, June 8 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Crookston Inn.

Seibel, a 2018 Crookston High School graduate, is undergoing intense treatment to fight a relapse of Hodgkins Lymphoma.  Jackson was first diagnosed in 2018 and underwent chemotherapy and radiation at Roger Maris Cancer Center in Fargo.  Now, his oncologists will try new chemotherapy drugs and new cure methods including a stem cell transplant at Mayo Clinic in Rochester.  Proceeds from the event will go toward medical and travel-related expenses.  Event organizer Nell DeBoer said Jess and Jackson will be spending a lot of time in Rochester.

“Jess and Jackson will spend approximately two months at the Mayo Clinic,” said DeBoer. “Garret will be back home with his daughter Violet and the dog, working his job and we really wanted to help them out.”

There will be a lot of silent auction items and one big item that will be raffled off. “We are going to do a lot of things,” said DeBoer. “We will have a bunch of silent auction items and we will have a very large item that will be given away by purchasing a ticket to win it.  If anybody wants to bring a donation item, we have a lot of gift certificates, gas cards, food cards, Hugo’s gift cards, and anything like that for the family.”

Jackson’s mom, Jess Bengston works at the Crookston Times and is active in many community clubs and events, including being the chair of the Ox Cart Days Festival.  Garrett Bengston works at New Flyer and is also a volunteer firefighter.

If you wish to donate an auction item, call Laurie at 470-1000.  If you are unable to attend and would like to donate, a fund has been set up at American Federal Bank in Crookston.

SACRED HEART NO-HITS BGMR TO ADVANCE TO SECTION 8A BASEBALL SEMI’S

nick-brundin-vs-bgmr-415x420-1

The Sacred Heart Eagles had a great pitching performance from Parker Erickson as the eighth-grader threw a no-hitter, and he also went 2 for 3 at the plate to beat the Badger/Greenbush-Middle River Gators 10-0 in five innings to advance to the Section 8A semi-finals at Bemidji State on Saturday.   “It was a good day to get the game done early,” said Sacred Heart coach Paul Bethke. “They came out and were aggressive, put the ball in play, and had some timely hits.”

Sacred Heart’s Parker Erickson set the tone in the game early after the lead-off batter reached on an error. He struck out the next three batters to get out of the inning.
In the bottom of the inning, Cullen Rohrich doubled and stole third base.  He later scored on a Gage Wavra sacrifice fly for a 1-0 lead.  “Cullen is such a difference-maker for us and when he is on the bases he makes it look so easy,” said Coach Bethke. “He helps the batters behind him because the defense and pitcher are so focused on him.”

Neither team scored in the second inning.  In the top of the third, BGMR had bases loaded with two outs after an error, hit batter, and a walk.  Erickson struck out the next batter and got out of a big-time jam without giving up a run.
Sacred Heart blew the game open in the bottom of the inning as the first six batters of the inning reached.  Erickson led off with a single.  Rohrich singled, and Sam Gapp singled to score a run for a 2-0 lead.  Gage Wavra was intentionally walked to load the bases, and Ethan Arnston singled up the middle to score two runs for a 4-0 lead.  Isaac Zavarol singled to score a run, and Nick Brundin had a sacrifice that scored another run for a 6-0 lead.  Sam Modeen followed with a single to score the sixth run of the inning for a 7-0 lead after three innings.  “We shut down their rally and used the momentum to get our bats going,” said Coach Bethke. “Ethan has done a lot of base hits at big times and our guys were aggressive and scoring from second.”

Neither team scored in the fourth inning, and Sacred Heart only needed three runs in the fifth inning to win the game.  Zavarol led off the inning by reaching on an error.  Nick Brundin singled in a run, and Modeen grounded out to score another run for a 9-0 lead.  After a strikeout for the second out of the inning, Erickson came up big again with a single and a stolen base to get to second base before Rohrich singled to score a run for a 10-0 victory in five innings.  “That was huge to get out of the game early today with temps in the 90’s,” said Coach Bethke. “Parker helped himself out at the plate today.”

Parker Erickson ended the game with a no-hitter according to the KROX scorekeeper, but Sacred Heart official scoring differed in opinion on a play at first where they gave BGMR a hit and KROX called it an error on a play that could have gone either way. “It was an unbelievable performance.  He has a couple no-hitters already this year and no matter how many hits there were, this was hit best performance of the year,” said Coach Bethke. “I forget he is only an eighth-grader the way he threw the pitches he wanted to throw and he did an awesome job and had some big strikeouts.”

Sacred Heart improves to 16-4 on the year and will play Fosston at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday at Bemidji State.  You can hear the game on KROX Radio, with the pre-game starting at 3:30 p.m.  The winner of the Sacred Heart vs. Fosston game will advance to the Section Championship on Thursday, June 10, at Bemidji State.
BGMR drops to 12-8 on the year.

SACRED HEART GETS GREAT PITCHING AND TIMELY HITTING IN WIN OVER KCC

sam-gapp-vs-kcc-409x420-1

The Sacred Heart Eagles avenged two regular-season losses to the Kittson County Central Bearcats with great pitching and timely hitting in a 5-3 victory in the second round of the Section 8A tournament played at Stauss Park in East Grand Forks.  “The boys were ready today because they (KCC) took it to us a little bit and we knew they were going to hit the ball and put it in play,” said Sacred Heart Coach Paul Bethke. “We made some big plays and had some great pitching to get us the win today.”

After a scoreless first inning, Kittson County Central led off the second inning with a Frank Finney single, a stolen base, and he advanced to third base on an error.  A couple of pitches later, Finney stole home on a double steal and the Bearcats took a 1-0 lead.

Sacred Heart got the bats going in the bottom of the third inning when Parker Erickson walked with one out.  Cullen Rohrich reached on an error and runners were at second and third base.  Sam Gapp singled in a run and Gage Wavra followed with a two-RBI single up the middle to give the Eagles a 3-1 lead. “Those guys have had big at-bats all season long and that is why they are where they are in the order,” said Coach Bethke. “We had some nice at-bats and it was great to take the lead.”

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Sam Modeen led off with a single, and Caden Reimer singled.  Modeen advanced to third on a steal while Reimer was caught stealing at second base.  After a fly out to the second baseman, Rohrich walked, and then in a planned play he started walking to second, and as soon as the KCC pitcher looked to throw the ball he took off sprinting to second and beat the throw.  At the same time, Modeen scored for a 4-1 lead. “That was a play that we work on and we call it an early walk,” said Coach Bethke. “It worked better than we anticipated because Cullen executed it perfectly and we got a run for free there, so that was great.”

Kittson County Central added a run on a walk and a single to get within a 4-2 deficit.
Sacred Heart countered with a run when Reimer singled and stole second base.  After back-to-back strikeouts, Sam Gapp doubled to score a run and Sacred Heart led 5-2 going into the seventh inning.

Kittson County Central was down to their final three outs and didn’t go down without a fight.  Carter Larson reached on an error and Isaac Fulland singled but was later out at second base on a fielder’s choice.  With runners on first and third, JK Steig singled to score a run to get within a 5-3 deficit.  Sacred Heart had to make a pitching change because of the pitch count and Ethan Arnston came in and struck out the first batter he faced on three pitches for the second out of the inning. “We ran into the pitch count limit and had to take Paul out,” said Coach Bethke. “He asked if I was sure because he still felt good, but we had to make the change. He was really pitching well and mixing up his speeds well.” Arnston got the next out on a fielder’s choice on a nice play by Isaac Zavoral at shortstop for a 5-3 victory.  “It went right down to the end.  It was a good baseball game and we had to make some big plays in the seventh inning to get the win,” said Coach Bethke. “It was a big win against a very good team and we played hard until the last out.”

Sacred Heart improves to 15-4 on the year and will take on the winner of Ada-Borup/West and Badger/Greenbush-Middle River at 3:00 p.m.
Kittson County Central drops to 10-6 on the year and will take on the loser of Ada-Borup/West and Badger/Greenbush-Middle River at 5:30 p.m.
