UMC’S MATTHEW LOESLIE TO BECOME DEAN OF APPLIED TECHNOLOGY AT M STATE COMMUNITY AND TECHNICAL COLLEGE

Minnesota State Community and Technical College announced University of Minnesota Crookston Program Director and Criminal Justice Faculty member Dr. Matthew Loeslie will become the Founding Dean for the Inaugural School of Applied Technology at Minnesota State Community and Technical College. Loeslie will be based in Detroit Lakes but will serve over several M State campuses, including Detroit Lakes, Fergus Falls, Moorhead, and Wadena.

Loeslie has spent the last five years as Program Director and a Criminal Justice Faculty for the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Education Department. He was awarded UMC’s Outstanding Educator Award in 2017. Loeslie earned a Doctor of Criminal Justice from California University of Pennsylvania, a Master of Arts in Criminal Justice Leadership from Concordia University-St. Paul, a Bachelor of Science in Sociology from South Dakota State University and a Law Enforcement certificate from Minnesota West Community and Technical College.

Loeslie reflects fondly on his time at UMC and the accomplishments of the program over the past five years. “Reflecting back on my time here, one of the key accomplishments as a criminal justice program was developing a one-page strategic plan,” Loeslie stated. “We had a number of items in there, but I think the most meaningful for the students specifically was our focus on increasing the leadership capacity of our students. Leadership development is what is needed in today’s workforce.”

Loeslie is also proud of being able to launch the program online. “Another accomplishment was getting the criminal justice program online,” Loeslie said. “I think sometimes people think you flip a lever and the program is online. The process includes many steps including writing proposals and completing feasibility studies. Ultimately it goes to a vote at the department level, faculty assembly, and even the Board of Regents vote. We had a positive vote at the Board of Regents to get our program online. As a result, we can now serve two different demographics. We can serve the traditional high school graduates and working adults.”

The Criminal Justice Student of the Year award was created to honor the top students in the program. Loeslie believes it has been a great addition for the students and has become something they compete for. “The award has been a fun way to honor students who do an exceptional job and are deserving of the award. We give the award to only one student a year, yet the award gives the recipient an advantage when they are job seeking.”

Loeslie is most proud of being able to get students ready for the workforce by giving them the tools to solve complex problems. “We give our students the capacity to understand the problems and help be part of the solution,” Loeslie remarked. “A lot of what we do in the classroom is problem-based learning. In the classroom, we assign work individually, small groups and then dissect it as a class. I feel like that method of learning has been a huge advantage to our students going out into the real world.”

It will be bittersweet for Loeslie to depart UMC as he has developed bonds with students, faculty, staff and within the community of Crookston during his time here. “It will definitely be the friendships and students,” Loeslie stated regarding what he will miss the most about UMN Crookston. “Crookston and the University of Minnesota have been a blessing to me and my family. I have built a lot of relationships and will miss having the daily interactions with my friends, co-workers and students.”

His position will help him get back to his community college roots. Prior to Crookston, Loeslie served at Minnesota West Community and Technical College. I look forward to the hands-on focused education that the community college offers.”

Loeslie will finish his time as Program Director in Crookston at the end of the month and will begin his role at M State July 1.

Former President Trump ends his blog after less than a month

shutterstock_1828751084-jpg

Former President Donald Trump is shutting down his blog after less than a month.  “From the Desk of Donald J. Trump” went live May 4, featuring statements Trump has made since March. The blog was meant to fill the ex-president’s communication gap after he was banned by social media outlets like Facebook and Twitter in January. Last month, the Facebook Oversight Board ruled that Trump would remain banned from the platform, but Facebook did not decide whether the ban will be permanent or set a time for reinstatement.

The blog site “From the Desk of Donald J. Trump” redirects now to a different site that asked visitors to sign up for Trump updates. According to Trump adviser Jason Miller  “It was just auxiliary to the broader efforts we have [been] and are working on.”

Trump is expected to return to the campaign trail on behalf of Republicans running for seats in the House and Senate in 2022. Trump himself has not announced whether he will run again for another term in office.

Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu’s opponents reach coalition deal, paving the way for his exit

shutterstock_1042782061-jpg

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s opponents announced they have reached a deal to form a new governing coalition, paving the way for the ouster of the longtime Israeli leader.

The announcement by opposition leader Yair Lapid and his main coalition partner, Naftali Bennett, came shortly before a midnight deadline.  Under the agreement, Lapid and Bennett will split the job of prime minister in a rotation. Bennett will serve the first two years, while Lapid is to serve the final two years.

The agreement still needs to be approved by the Knesset, or parliament, in a vote early next week. If it goes through, Lapid and a diverse array of partners will end the 12-year rule of Netanyahu. Netanyahu, who is fighting corruption charges, is expected to do everything possible in the coming days to prevent the new coalition from taking power. If he fails, he will be pushed into the opposition.

It is playoff time with Section baseball and Softball in the second round of play today.  The Section 8AA golf tournament is set for Monday and Tuesday, while Section 8A crowned its champions already.  The sub-section track meets are Thursday (today) and one of the oddest things of the spring is the Section 8A track and field meet will be on Tuesday, June 8 because let’s have Section golf, section baseball, section softball, chess, marbles, tiddly winks and everything else on the same day….because….why not.  Nothing on Wednesday which is baffling to me.  But I am just a media guy complaining and nobody cares about us because we are the only media entity that covers all of the following in-person – Sub-section and Section 8AA golf, Section 8A track, Section 8AA and 8a Baseball and Softball, Section 8A tennis, and everything else.

University of Minnesota Crookston baseball player Brock Reller (Sr., OF, Grand Forks, N.D.) was named to the ABCA/Rawlings Division II All-Central Region

Second Team. Reller has earned two all-region accolades during the 2021 season. Reller was named to the D2CAA All-Central Region team last month. Reller joins Reed Hjelle (2018) and Kenny Perez (2016) as Golden Eagles to earn multiple all-region honors in a single season.

Reller was an All-NSIC First Team selection for the Golden Eagles. He hit .338 as a senior with a .448 on-base percentage and a .803 slugging percentage. Reller had 17 home runs on the season which led UMC and the NSIC.  Reller added 39 runs scored, seven doubles, and four triples. He is UMC’s all-time career home run leader and single-season home run leader.

The University of Minnesota Crookston men’s basketball team announced the signing of Zen Goodridge (F/C, 6-7 235, Orlando, Fla./Bethune-Cookman University). Goodridge is a Division I transfer from Bethune-Cookman University of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC).

Goodridge was a member of the team at Bethune-Cookman University, a Division I program located in Daytona Beach, Florida, for two seasons. In 2019-20, Goodridge played in 12 games and averaged 1.1 points and 0.9 rebounds per game.
Goodridge attended Paris Junior College in Paris, Texas during the 2018-19 season but he redshirted. As a freshman, he competed for Rend Lake College in Ina, Illinois. Goodridge averaged five points and five rebounds for Rend Lake College.
He attended Central Florida Christian Academy for high school. He averaged seven points and eight rebounds per game as a senior. Goodridge helped his high school to the regional semifinals as a junior and a state runner-up finish during his senior season.

“Zen really shores up our interior play,” said Head Coach Dan Weisse. “We wanted to address our deficiencies and I believe we have done that with adding Nathaniel Powell, with Hunter Lyman being a year older and gaining experience, and now having Zen join our program. Zen will give resistance in the post defensively, he is a good rebounder, and is a team first guy. He has good feet and really runs the floor hard. He has a physicality about him, something we have been missing in the post in the past. In getting to know Zen and talking to his former coaches, it is apparent that he is a culture builder. I am looking forward to working with Zen and welcome him to the Golden Eagle basketball family.”

He is the son of Therol and Christine James-McKenzie. He plans to major in business at UMC.
