CROOKSTON SOFTBALL PLAYS ROSEAU IN A PLAYIN SECTION 8AA TOURNAMENT GAME IN GLYNDON

The Crookston Pirate Girl’s Softball team is the number nine seed in the North Sub-Section of the Section 8AA Softball Tournament that starts today. The Pirates will play the number eight seed, the Roseau Rams in a play in game in Glyndon at 3:00 PM with the winner then playing the number one seed in the North, the Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton Rebels at 5:00 PM.
The Pirates are 4-16 on the season having lost their last four games and also were swept by Roseau during the regular season 16-6 and 15-5. The Rams are 8-11 and have won two in a row including a nice 6-5 win over Red Lake Falls on Thursday. Game time is 3:00 PM in Glyndon and it will be on KROX RADIO starting with the RiverView Health pre-game show at 2:30 PM and also on the internet by going to the LISTEN LIVE link at the top of this page.

Verona M. Heiraas – Obit

Verona M. Heiraas, age 89, of Ada, MN, died Friday, May 28, 2021, at Benedictine Care Community in Ada, after a brief illness.

Verona was born on May 22, 1932, in rural Ada. She was the daughter of Ted and Lillie (Pagel) Hasz. Verona grew up on a farm. She attended school in Ada and graduated in May of 1950. On October 10, 1953, Verona was united in marriage to Donald Miran Heiraas. They made their home in Ada and raised a family of five. Verona was a life-long member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Green Meadow Township. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. Verona was active in the ladies’ aid, taught Sunday School, and served as Financial Secretary for the congregation for many years. She especially loved making numerous quilts and received great joy knowing they were being used to provide warmth for others. Verona’s main passion in life was serving her husband and family. She ran her home with compassion, love, and humor with a little bit of discipline mixed in! She always made time to pray with her family at night and spent countless hours sharing her love for Jesus.

Over the years, Verona candled eggs for the Cossentine family, waitressed at the Pantry and Spot Cafes, served customers at Ecklands Meat Market, and sold jewelry and gifts for Skarud’s Gift Shop. She worked as a secretary for the Ada Public Schools from 1984-1999. Verona enjoyed camping, quilting, baking, gardening, canning, mowing the lawn, and making cinnamon rolls for her family.

Verona is survived by her five children, Ron (Gail) Heiraas, Moorhead, MN, Val (Myron) Uttermark, Waubun, MN, Dan (Tina) Heiraas, Lester Prairie, MN, Patrice (Larry) Gerber, Brighton, CO, and Angie (Mike) Babler, Borup, MN.  Verona is also survived by 12 grandchildren, Jennifer, Kimberly, Ryan, Dusty, Corey, Lindsey, Drew, Timothy, David, Bethany, Matt, and Alli; 16 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; one sister, Irene Dahlin, Breckenridge, MN; three brothers, Wayne (Dorothy), Lester Prairie, MN, Merle (Jackie), Foreston, MN, and Herb (Gail), Grand Forks, ND.

Verona was preceded in death by her parents, and life-long husband of 42 years, Don.

Funeral: 2:00 PM, Thursday, June 3, 2021, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, rural Ada, MN.

Visitation: Thursday from 12 noon until the start of the funeral at the church.

Interment: St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery, rural Ada, MN.

Betty Lou Klemens, 87, of Little Rock, CA, passed away Saturday, May 29, 2021, in the Piedmont-Fayette Hospital, Fayetteville, GA. Betty Lou was the daughter of the late Floyd and Lulu Morlan of Crookston, MN, and had recently moved to Griffin, GA to make her home with one of her daughters. Search for missing Iowa boy intensifies with the help of hundreds of community members

Several hundred volunteers joined law enforcement officials in searching for a missing Iowa boy.  11-year-old Xavior Harrelson was last seen around 11 a.m. Thursday on his bike near his home on the north end of Montezuma. About 375 volunteers joined 125 law enforcement officers and first responders in the search.

Mitch Mortvedt with the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation said areas around the family’s home were being searched Sunday. Harrelson was wearing a red shirt and blue pajama pants with black high-top shoes when he disappeared, authorities said. Police and family of the boy said it is out of the ordinary for him to be gone from home overnight with no contact.

President Biden speaks at the 153rd National Memorial Day observance at Arlington National Cemetery

President Joe Biden laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery on Monday to mark Memorial Day, mentioning the many  “precious” lives buried there.  Biden said: “We must never forget each of these markers — both known and unknown here at Arlington and far beyond — represent a precious life. A son, a daughter, a mother, father, brothers sisters, a friend a neighbor.”

Biden’s address came on the six-year anniversary of his son Beau’s death. “For those who mourn a loved one today, Jill and I have some idea how you’re feeling,” Biden said.  Beau Biden died of brain cancer at the age of 46 in 2015, and was a judge advocate general who served two tours in Iraq with the Delaware Army National Guard where he achieved the rank of major. He travelled to the war zone over 25 times.

Biden was accompanied at Arlington National Cemetery by first lady Jill Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, second gentleman Douglas Emhoff, Austin and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Mark A. Milley. The ceremony took place at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the cemetery, where 400,000 of the nation’s fallen service members and veterans are buried.

Nickelodeon shares a sneak peek of ‘SpongeBob’ spinoff ‘The Patrick Star Show”

Nickelodeon has released the first footage of its SpongeBob SquarePants spinoff series, The Patrick Star Show, who will get his own animated comedy on the cable network starting in July.

Bill Fagerbakke reprises his voice role of Patrick from the SpongeBob franchise in the 13-episode series in what the network says is a prequel, describing it as: “a family sitcom starring Patrick and the rest of his family as they are constantly disrupted by Patrick’s wild whims and surreal imagination.”

‘Quiet Place Part II’ wins the North American weekend box office with $48.4M

A Quiet Place Part II, is the No. 1 movie in North America, earning $48.4 million in receipts during its opening weekend.  Coming in at No. 2 is Cruella with $21.3 million, followed by Spiral at No. $2.3 million, Wrath of Man at No. 4 with $2.1 million and Raya and the Last Dragon at No. 5 with $2 million.

The sequel to the 2018 film “A Quiet Place” smashed the record for the biggest opening weekend weekend since the COVID-19 pandemic began.  Filmmaker John Krasinski directed and co-wrote both Quiet Place films about a family surviving in a post-apocalyptic world.  The films star Krasinski’s wife, Emily Blunt, along with Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe reprise their roles from the first film.

The Northwest Regional Corrections Central reported the following arrests over the weekend –

Charles Richard Schoen, 41 of Gary, for first-degree burglary, assault person in building/on property

Jessica Ann Lafriniere, 37 of Crookston, for third-degree drug possession of a schedule 1 or 2 narcotic, LSD, MDA, or MDMA in a school/park/public housing zone.

Alex Zander Alexander, 39 of East Grand Forks, for criminal sexual conduct in the first degree for penetration or contact with someone under the age of 13.  Accomplice armed dangerous weapon.

Arturo Alcozer III, 35 of Thief River Falls, for third-degree drug possession of a scheduled 1 or 2 narcotic, LSD, MDA, or MDMA in a school/park/public housing zone.

William Keith Cabrera, 37 of Crookston, for domestic abuse, no-contact order.  Violation of a no-contact order with 10 years of previous conviction.

Ernesto Acevedo, 47 of Crookston, for third-degree drug possession.  Methamphetamine/amphetamine in a school/park/public housing zone.

THREE TAKEN TO HOSPITAL AFTER SINGLE-VEHICLE ACCIDENT IN BELTRAMI TOWNSHIP

On Monday, May 31, the Polk County Sheriff Office responded to a single vehicle accident with injuries on 410th Street SW and 250th Ave SW in rural Beltrami township.  Upon arrival a vehicle was located on its roof with one adult female later known as Cassandra Meine, age 28 of Beltrami, and two children ages 6 and 3 that were out of the vehicle with injuries.  All three of them were transported to the Riverview Emergency Room in Crookston with injuries.

The Minnesota State Patrol, Polk County EMS and Beltrami Fire and Rescue assisted with the call.

No further information will be given at this time.  The crash is under investigation.

UMC TEAMBACKERS SELLING RAFFLE TICKETS TO HELP SUPPORT SCHOLARSHIPS

Tickets are on sale now for the UMC Teambackers 2021 Scholarship drive. “Raising these funds is such an important part of what helps create opportunities to enhance the athletic experience for our athletes, fans and the community,” says Andrea Weisse, Teambacker Board President. The raffle will benefit the UMC Teambacker Endowed Scholarship which has awarded more than $60,000 to student-athletes over the years.

“It’s been a unique time and we are eager to continue serving student-athletes with athletic scholarships, upgrades to our facilities and of course equipment, ” said Associate Development Director, Derek Martin. UMC Teambackers have been building a tradition of impact with contributions from hundreds of supporters. Martin said funds raised by UMC Teambackers has helped the University of Minnesota Crookston Athletic Department create a new indoor golf practice facility, upgrades to Lysaker Gymnasium and the UMN Crookston baseball facility, and has provided thousands of dollars toward athletic scholarships.

Three-hundred tickets will be sold for the cash drawing to be held July 16th. First prize is $2,500, second prize is $1,500 and two $500 dollar cash awards will be drawn. You don’t need to be present to win.
