Senate Republicans block vote to advance bipartisan infrastructure bill

shutterstock_180961442

On Wednesday, Senate Republicans blocked a procedural vote to advance a massive bipartisan infrastructure bill, saying it is premature to do so while negotiators are still ironing out its details. The infrastructure bill, ultimately expected to be worth $600 billion, has been a key priority of President Joe Biden.

GOP senators blocked consideration of the measure with 49 votes, voting down Sen. Chuck Schumer’s bid to move debate forward while negotiators from both parties have yet to find common ground over issues such as funding for transit and how to pay for the package. The bipartisan bill focuses on brick-and-mortar projects while Democrats prefer a version that seeks $3.5 trillion for wider related issues like climate change initiatives and “human infrastructure” such as childcare.

Republican Sen. Mitt Romney, who is part of that bipartisan group that worked on the framework of the bill, called on Schumer to delay Wednesday’s vote until Monday because negotiators are close to reaching a full agreement. Romney said: “Until we’ve ironed out all of the remaining issues, Wednesday is premature, but I think Monday would be sufficient time for us to get all the remaining issues solved, and socialize the legislation with our colleagues so they know how they want to vote.”

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi vetoes two GOP recommendations for Jan. 6 committee

shutterstock_1487795963

On Wednesday, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi vetoed two choices to serve on the committee set to investigate the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. Reps. Jim Banks on Indiana and Jim Jordan of Ohio, chosen by House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, were rejected by Pelosi to sit on the panel, which will investigate the riot at the U.S. Capitol. Banks and Jordan both voted against certifying the election results.

Pelosi said that the unprecedented decision was driven by the unprecedented nature of the Jan. 6 attack:
“We need a comprehensive investigation as to who organized this attack, who paid for it, how they nearly succeeded in overthrowing a presidential election, why they did it and how we must organize ourselves to prevent anything like it from ever happening again,” reads Pelosi’s statement.

Pelosi said she’s prepared to appoint Reps. Rodney Davis, Kelly Armstrong and Troy Nehls, and requested McCarthy to appoint two other members. The committee will have a total of 13 members, eight of those being appointed by Democrats and five appointed by Republican leader McCarthy. The panel is expected to hold its first hearing next week.

Former Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein pleads not-guilty to 11 counts in Los Angeles Court

shutterstock_1607433748

Harvey Weinstein pleaded not guilty in a Los Angeles courtroom Wednesday to four counts of rape and seven other sexual assault counts. The 69-year-old was brought into court in a wheelchair by sheriff’s deputies, wearing a brown jail jumpsuit and face mask. Attorney Mark Werksman entered the plea one day after Weinstein was extradited to California from New York, where he was serving a 23-year prison term.

Weinstein’s charges involve five women and span from 2004 to 2013, said to have taken place in the hotels in Beverly Hills and Los Angeles that the New York-based Weinstein would make his headquarters for Hollywood business. Weinstein pleaded not guilty to four counts of rape, four counts of forcible oral copulation, two counts of sexual battery by restraint and one count of sexual penetration by use of force, charges that together could bring a sentence of 140 years. The women were not named in the charging documents.

A New York jury found Weinstein guilty of rape in 2013 and sexual assault in 2006 at his Manhattan apartment; he is appealing that conviction, seeking a new trial. Weinstein maintains his innocence and contends that any sexual activity was consensual.

Valley City State announced they are starting a $25 million fundraising campaign for an indoor practice facility, an addition to W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse, and upgrades to academic buildings and scholarships.

Phase I of the project is tied directly to athletes and includes an indoor turf practice facility with a 200-meter track, updated strength and conditioning and athletic training facilities, new and expanded locker rooms, updated and expanded public areas, classroom, and meeting rooms along with a Vikings’ Hall of Fame.

Phase I is estimated at $18 million for the fieldhouse addition, as well as an additional $1 million in scholarship enhancements that could help hundreds of students pay for their education.

Additional parts of the project will focus on repurposing McCarthy Hall into a school for education and graduate studies and a student center renovation. The student center previously housed a swimming pool that is now closed. That building will be converted into banquet and meeting spaces for a variety of activities.

Valley City State has 14 sports teams and more than 270 athletes that use the Osmon Fieldhouse in some capacity. The Vikings are an NAIA program and a North Star Athletic Association member.

The Vikings football team plays on Shelly Ellig Field at Lokken Stadium, but has its locker rooms at Osmon Fieldhouse. The team, which has a roster of around 100 players, has to split its squad into two locker rooms.

JOKES

A Congressman was once asked about his attitude toward whiskey. “If you mean the demon drink that poisons the mind, pollutes the body, desecrates family life, and inflames sinners, then I’m against it.

But if you mean the elixir of Christmas cheer, the shield against winter chill, the taxable potion that puts needed funds into public coffers to comfort little crippled children, then I’m for it. This is my position, and I will not compromise.”

— —

Saturday morning I got up early, put on my long johns, dressed quietly, made my lunch, grabbed my shotgun and the dog, slipped quietly into the garage to load the truck, and proceeded to back out into a torrential downpour.
There was snow mixed with the rain, and the wind was blowing 50 mph. I pulled back into the garage, turned on the radio, and discovered that the weather would be bad throughout the day.
I went back into the house, quietly undressed, and slipped back into bed. There I cuddled up to my wife’s back, now with a different anticipation, and whispered, “The weather out there is terrible.”
She sleepily replied, “Can you believe my stupid husband is out hunting in that crap?”

A man meets a woman at a bar and asks her  – “Would you have sex with me for 10 million dollars?”

Without skipping a beat she screams “Yes!”

The man then asks “What about for $20?”

She looks at him sideways and says “What do you think I am, a whore?”

The man says “We’ve already established that you are, now we’re just negotiating.”

CITY OF GRAND FORKS ASKING CITIZENS TO LIMIT OUTDOOR WATER USAGE

The City of Grand Forks is asking residential, commercial & industrial water users to limit their outdoor water usage as part of Phase 2 of the City’s Drought Management and Demand Reduction Plan (See below).

Starting Thursday, July 22, 2021, residential water users in odd-numbered homes are asked to limit the watering of their lawns to between 4 am – 11 am on Mondays and Thursdays.  Residential water users in even-numbered homes are asked to limit watering of lawns to between 4 am – 11 am on Tuesdays and Fridays.

The city monitors stream flows in our two water sources on a regular basis.  The stream flows in the Red Lake River were 222 Cubic Feet per Second (cfs) on July 21st.  In May the Red Lake River was flowing at 543 cfs.  The Red River had a stream flow of 650 cfs on July 21.  In May the Red River was flowing at 1920 cfs.

Even with the rainfall this week, the stream flow numbers continue to incrementally trend down.

Over the past week, the Grand Forks Regional Water Treatment Plant peaked at treating over 16 million gallons of water per day.  With the implementation of Phase 1 of our plan, the plant was able to reduce to 11-12 million gallons per day.  There is an expectation to increase treatment to 12-14 million gallons per day.  The water treatment plant can treat up to 20 million gallons per day.

With the decreased stream flow and a dry and hot forecast, the city felt it was time to move to Phase 2 of our plan.

This is not mandatory.  Residents are asked to voluntarily participate in limiting their outdoor water usage as part of Phase 2.  The situation will continue to be monitored.  Phase 3 of the plan is a mandatory restriction.

RIVERVIEW HEALTH OFFERING SPORTS PHYSICALS THURSDAY JULY 29

riverview-health-35

After more than a year of short sports seasons and interrupted schedules due to COVID-19, it’s time to look ahead to 2021-2022 high school sports! With the start of those new seasons, it’s time for sports physicals.

The Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) requires students have a physical exam every three years, typically before entering 7th and 10th grade. RiverView will offer $30 sports physicals in Crookston Thursday, July 29 from 4-7 pm.

While a RiverView sports physical meets all of the requirements for participation in sports by the MSHSL, a sports physical is not intended to replace annual, comprehensive physical exams, also known as well-child visits. Well-child visits are recommended for all children each year to check the child’s growth and development and help prevent disease through routine vaccinations and education. These visits include the necessary requirements of a sports physical exam. To schedule a well-child visit/sports physical, please call 218-281.9595.
