POLK COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE ANNOUNCES NEW K9 UNIT

k9-one

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office announced the addition of a new K9 team last week. The duo is Deputy Ben Stout and two-and-a-half-year-old K9 partner Shepherd/Belgian Malinois mix Rex. Last Wednesday was Rex’s first day after graduating from K9 Training.

Both Rex and Deputy Ben Stout attended handler training with Mark McDonough of McDonough K9 in Anoka. “The whole training was 13 weeks, and it was a long 13 weeks driving back and forth on the weekends,” said Stout. “It was long days of training, so graduation day felt pretty good. The ceremony was fairly short, and we ran through a few of the various things we learned over the course of the training.”

Both Polk County Sheriff Jim Tadman and Mark McDonough were K9 handlers from 1996-2001, and McDonough has experience training other Polk County Sheriff K9 teams. McDonough K9 has provided exceptional working dogs for law enforcement agencies over the years.

For Stout, this will be his first time being a part of a K9 team but he says Rex is already all business. “Over the weekend when I was on my days off, anytime I would let him out, he would run over to my squad car, so he’s been ready to go” said Stout.

A career usually varies for a K9, but the average time in the line of duty is somewhere between six to nine years of service. Deputy Stout has been with the Polk County Sheriff’s Office since 2017 and will now be a part of one of the Office’s two K9 units.

NEW RULES FOR CHILD TAX CREDIT IN 2021

irs-logo

Changes are coming to the Child Tax Credit (CTC) and advanced payment options for 2021 and it could affect families at tax time as some families may need to pay some of the credit back.

There are a few instances where this could happen. Your child is no longer a dependent on your tax return, your income has increased for 2021, and you no longer qualify for the total amount; for divorced couples, you alternate in claiming your child and should not have received the advance in the first place.

The old rules were that you got a $2,000 credit for children 16 and under as long as you were within certain income restrictions.  With the new rule, you now get $3,600 for children under the age of six and $3,000 for children ages six to 17.
There are safe harbors that protect you from potentially having to pay back these amounts.

  • Single 40,000 and 80,000
  • Head of the House: $50,000 and $100,000
  • Married Filed Jointly: $60,000 and $120,000

Any number that exceeds the amount listed above, based on what category you fall into, will be subject to a full repayment on your tax return.  The easiest way to avoid a full repayment is to check out the IRS online portal and opt-out of advanced payments if you no longer need them. “On the IRS website, there is an option for you to unenroll if you don’t want advanced payments,” said Colin O’Shea Senior Manager and CPA with Brady, Martz & Associates in Crookston. “This will give you credit back on your tax return in one payment if you deserve it and avoid a possibility of you needing to pay back the IRS.”

You will need to opt-out of the payments if you choose that route. Otherwise, you will automatically be subject to receiving those payments.

Greg Bruley, one of the owners of H&R Block in Crookston, noted people must start looking into this now. “Starting in July this year, you can advance a part of your qualifying amount,” said Bruley. “To take the advance, you would be receiving $300 per child five or under for each month. And $250 per month for children between the ages of six and 17.”

The amount of the advancement goes up to 50 percent and will run all the way through to the end of 2021. Important things to keep in mind with the new rules include keeping any document received from the IRS and making sure to unenroll on the IRS website if you no longer want to receive the payments.

TACO JOHNS UNDERGOING REMODELING INSIDE AND ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE STORE

taco-johns

If you have driven by Taco John’s in Crookston, you have probably noticed the construction and remodeling that is being done to the building.

“We are hoping to be open inside by August 2.  It’s looking very promising, however, it may not be with our full seating,” said General Manager Renee Voss. “Our seating package is actually what is taking the longest, but the inside is going to look completely different when the job is complete.”

The dining room will be repainted and have new tile, booths, bar stools, and much more. The outside will also look much different upon completion and will feature a new paint job and bigger windows to bring in more light to the restaurant.

The drive-through is fully open for business, and Voss says they’re ready to serve the public. “The hours are the same through the drive-through, and even though we don’t look open, we absolutely are,” said Voss. “Hopefully we can get everything back inside here and see everyone again before Ox Cart Days in August.”

Current hours are Monday-Friday 6:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. and Saturday-Sunday 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Voss hopes people still stop by this summer amid the remodeling. “Stop on by, we are open outside, and you can sit at the picnic tables. We do take care of those” said Voss. “Our windows will hopefully be in next week so that it will look a little more functional and open then.”

The full menu is available, including a few new deals that have just recently been added. “We have our new value menu out now, as well as our new fried chicken tacos,” said Voss. “It’s a new Chicken item. It’s delicious, and we also have coupons coming out July 5 for our new chicken and breakfast.”
