MNDOT REMINDS MOTORISTS TO SLOW DOWN IN WORK ZONES

mndotlogo-29

With holiday celebrations throughout the state and forecasts of warm weather over the July 4 weekend, the Minnesota Department of Transportation urges all motorists to slow down, plan ahead and “keep cool” while driving through work zones.

More than 200 projects will be underway on state roads this construction season. While most work will be suspended over the July 4 holiday, work zones will remain in place for many projects throughout the state. MnDOT recommends that motorists visit www.511mn.org to get information about road construction projects and traffic impacts before they head out, think about alternate routes and prepare for slower moving traffic.

Motorists should also be aware that the fine for speeding in a work zone is $300.

Some of the highway projects in the Northeastern Minnesota that may affect weekend travel include:

MINNESOTA DNR ENCOURAGES PEOPLE TO REPORT FISH DIE-OFFS

fish-die-off

Hot weather is likely contributing to fish die-offs in lakes throughout Minnesota. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) said spring and summer fish die-offs happen occasionally, and they are getting widespread reports of dead fish following the recent prolonged stretch of hot weather.

The DNR encourages you to report fish die-offs by calling the state duty officer at 651‐649‐5451 or 800‐422‐0798 if you encounter a large group of dead fish in a lake or a stream (the state duty officer is available 24 hours per day, seven days a week). Calling in a report provides a single point of contact for the incident. An early report also allows timely water sampling or other response actions, if needed. It’s especially helpful to know what fish types and sizes people see in a fish die-off.

In mid-spring and summer, fish die-offs are often the result of warming water and opportunistic infections that spread in fish populations that are already stressed after the spawning season. Species commonly observed in these die-offs include sunfish, crappies, and bullheads, and, occasionally, largemouth bass and northern pike.

President and First Lady arrive in Miami, as rescue efforts at Surfside condo collapse site are suspended

shutterstock_2000378519

Officials said that rescue efforts at the site of the collapsed Surfside, Florida condominium building were halted on Thursday out of concern about the stability of the remaining structure. Search crews that have working over the last week stopped work shortly after 2 a.m., Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava told a news conference.

The halt in rescue efforts came on the same day that crews and relatives of those still missing met with President Joe Biden. The president’s visit comes a week after Champlain Towers South, a 12-story beachfront condominium building in Surfside, suddenly came crashing down. Biden and first lady Jill Biden thanked first responders and search and rescue teams, and met with the families of victims. Biden commended the strength of the families of people involved in the condo collapse, and after visiting the site with Mrs. Biden, the president said that the families were “realistic” about the prospect that the chances of their loved ones’ survival decreases by the day but said “at minimum” they hope to recover the bodies.

The number of confirmed dead is now 18, with residents still unaccounted for standing at 145. Concerns remained that the still standing portion of the complex could also collapse, with Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Assistant Chief Raide Jadallah saying: “What we know is that the columns on the east side of the building are kind of, of concern, not compromised, but just right now of concern. Hypothetically, worst-case scenario: If these columns are truly really bad, we are worried they could collapse right back into the parking garage.”

Trump Organization, CFO Allen Weisselberg plead not guilty to tax fraud charges in Manhattan DA investigation

shutterstock_347478077

The Trump Organization’s chief financial officer, Allen Weisselberg, and lawyers for the company appeared in front of a Manhattan judge Thursday, pleading not guilty to charges in what prosecutors called a sweeping tax fraud scheme. The charges were unsealed after former President Donald Trump’s longtime aide and the company were indicted by the Manhattan District Attorney and Attorney General Letitia James. Weisselberg entered the courtroom in handcuffs and entered the not guilty plea on charges related to alleged failure to pay taxes on corporate benefits and perks. Moments before Weisselberg pleaded not guilty to grand larceny, lawyers on behalf of the Trump Organization pleaded not guilty to charges of scheme to defraud.

The 15-count indictment alleges Weisselberg and the Trump Organization cheated New York State and New York City out of taxes by conspiring to pay senior executives off the books from 2005 through this year. Prosecutors allege Weisselberg evaded taxes on $1.7 million in income that included apartment rent, car payments and school tuition. Weisselberg’s estranged, former daughter-in-law turned over several boxes of documents from her divorce to prosecutors. She claimed they show financial transactions from Weisselberg to her family for rent, cars and private school tuition.

Weisselberg, an employee of 48 years, operated as CFO of the Trump Organization as well as the Trump family’s personal bookkeeper. He also appeared on Trump’s reality show “The Apprentice.” Trump himself was not charged, but he isn’t in the clear. The grand jury will be sitting in November, so it’s possible he could still see indictments. The former president did say his company’s actions were “standard practice” and “in no way a crime.”

Harry Connick, Jr., has joined the cast of the NBC special Annie Live!  Connick, 53, will play Daddy Warbucks in the TV musical. NBC announced earlier this month that Empire actress Taraji P. Henson will play Miss Hannigan.

Connick confirmed the news in a statement to People: “It’s such a classic show and it’s a show that I’m so familiar with, just from seeing it a million times. And it’s one of those things where you watch it and enjoy it and never really imagine yourself a part of, so when I was asked to play Daddy Warbucks it was kind of surreal because that’s such an iconic role. It wasn’t something I ever really thought about. I was just thrilled that I was asked to do it.”

Annie Live! is based on the Broadway musical, which was itself inspired by the Harold Gray comic strip Little Orphan AnnieAnnie Live! will air late this year and will be NBC’s first live musical since Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert, which aired in 2018.

CROOKSTON SCHOOL DISTRICT AND TEACHERS UNION COME TO A TENTATIVE CONTRACT AGREEMENT

crookston-public-schools-74

The Crookston School District and the Crookston Education Association (the teachers union) have arrived at a tentative contract agreement for the 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 school years.

The contract will give the teachers a two percent increase in 2021-2022 and a 2.45 percent increase in 2022-2023, which replicates the increase in funding from the Minnesota state legislature.  Health insurance will stay the same as what they are currently getting.

“It was a really nice process.  We had two meetings and both sides were very reasonable and a fair package,” said Superintendent Olson. “It replicates the increase that we are getting from the state.”

Olson added that there was another part of the deal that he feels will help the school district. “We saw that our base salary was a little on the low side so we have an agreement with the teachers and we will boost the starting wage and move a partial step to the top to reward those teachers that have been here for a while.”

The tentative agreement will need to be ratified by the CEA membership and the Crookston School Board with the target final approval at the July School Board meeting.

The Crookston School District still has two more contracts to negotiate (paraprofessionals and instructional aides) for the upcoming school year.
