After reaching a deal with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to protect monthly emergency food payments for Minnesotans, Governor Tim Walz today announced a plan to end the COVID-19 peacetime emergency on July 1st while ensuring an orderly transition. Following the Governor’s agreement with the federal government, Minnesota House Democrats introduced an amendment that allows for an orderly transition of the state’s current COVID-19 emergency response.

The Crookston Farmers Market, Polk County Public Health (PCPH), Polk County Wellness Coalition, and University of Minnesota Extension SNAP-Ed are excited to announce the return of the popular Power of Produce (PoP) Club to the 2021 Crookston Farmers Market season beginning on Thursday, July 1.

PoP aims to create new eating habits and encourage learning where our food comes from; it also can play a key role in building healthy, prospering communities. The program encourages children, families, and seniors to attend the farmers market every week, creating healthy food purchasing and eating habits, preventing chronic disease, and potentially increasing the market’s customer base and the revenue of local growers. The PoP Club also aims to create a social norm around farmers markets. In coordination with other market activities, the program helps to create an equitable space that community members want to visit each week and make part of their normal shopping routine.

All weekly attendees age 0-18 or 65 years of age and older have access to $2.00 worth of healthy fruits and/or vegetables. Sign up for the PoP Club and PoP Plus program, and voucher distribution will start during the market day on July 1 during the market hours of 4:00-6:30 pm. Vouchers will be issued during subsequent market days (except during Ox Cart Days) until funds run out.

The 2019 program boasted great outcomes in meeting the goals of PoP Club to 1) increase family attendance at the market, 2) improve the eating behavior of children; and 3) increase the customer base and revenue for local growers.
After 12 weeks of the PoP Club in 2019, 677 youth 18 and under and 266 adults 65 and older (PoP+) signed up for the program, a total of 943 visits to the market. This equaled $1,826 reimbursed to local farmers.

Some of the program’s feedback included: “The kids had a blast being in charge of picking vegetables”; “It encouraged us to keep attending and to get extra vegetables that we might not have otherwise purchased”; “Great program, hope to see it back again.” We also received numerous comments from participants who tried new fruits or vegetables.

If you or your organization would like to donate as a sponsor, please contact PoP Program Coordinator Geri Lynn at glp8001@gmail.com. Time is also an appreciated donation – if you would like to volunteer at the upcoming 2021 market season for the PoP Program, you can sign-up at z.umn.edu/crookstonpop or contact Geri Lynn.

For more information on the PoP program, please contact Megan Hruby, University of Minnesota Extension – SNAP-Ed by email at jans0221@umn.edu, or Kirsten Fagerlund, PCPH at kirsten.fagerlund@co.polk.mn.us or Amanda Lien, PCPH at amanda.lien@co.polk.mn.us.

Robinhood ordered to pay $70M for negligence and misleading info

shutterstock_1925038823

On Wednesday, the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (“FINRA”) levied its largest fine ever against popular investing app Robinhood. Robinhood, known for letting customers trade stocks through an app, will pay $57 million in fines in addition to $12.6 million in restitution to customers.  FINRA is a nonprofit, self-regulatory agency that oversees member brokerages and exchanges.

FINRA found that Robinhood violated regulations and showed false and misleading information to customers. Some customers were allowed to place trades with borrowed money, even though they’d turned off that setting in the app, according to FINRA. Others saw inaccurate negative cash balances. Robinhood also failed to report a variety of customer complaints to FINRA, and suffered a number of outages from 2018 through 2021 that caused customer losses, most prominently during the GameStop stock surge. FINRA determined that the outages and system failures were partially due to the lack of a proper continuity plan.

Bill Cosby is released from prison after Pennsylvania high court overturns sex assault conviction

shutterstock_1065920771-2

Pennsylvania’s highest court overturned Bill Cosby’s sex assault conviction Wednesday, after finding an agreement with a previous prosecutor prevented him from being charged in the case. According to the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections, Cosby was released from prison on Wednesday afternoon, after serving more than two years of a three- to 10-year sentence at a state prison near Philadelphia. He had vowed to serve all 10 years rather than acknowledge any remorse over the 2004 encounter with accuser Andrea Constand.

In a statement Wednesday afternoon, District Attorney Kevin R. Steele said, “The majority decision by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court orders the release of William H. Cosby Jr. from state prison. He was found guilty by a jury and now goes free on a procedural issue that is irrelevant to the facts of the crime.”  The 83-year-old Cosby was convicted of drugging and molesting Constand at his suburban estate. The trial judge had allowed just one other accuser to testify at Cosby’s first trial, when the jury deadlocked. However, he then allowed five other accusers to testify at the retrial about their experiences with Cosby in the 1980s. The Pennsylvania Supreme Court said that testimony tainted the trial, even though a lower appeals court had found it appropriate to show a signature pattern of drugging and molesting women.

In May, Cosby was denied paroled after refusing to participate in sex offender programs during his nearly three years in state prison. He was adamant that he would resist any treatment programs and refuse to acknowledge wrongdoing even if it meant serving the full 10-year sentence.

Actor Allison Mack sentenced to 3 years in prison in NXIVM sex-slave case

shutterstock_107871647

Actor Allison Mack, 38, was sentenced to 3 years in prison Wednesday after pleading guilty to charges she manipulated women into becoming sex slaves for NXIVM’s leader, Keith Ranier.  NXIVM was a cult group that masqueraded itself as a self-help organization. Mack also received a $20,000 fine.

Mack – best known for her role on the series “Smallville” – appeared in Brooklyn federal court, seeking credit for cooperating against Raniere and taking responsibility for helping him create a secret society of brainwashed women who were branded with his initials. Mack wrote in a letter filed with the court last week that devoting herself to Raniere “was the biggest mistake and greatest regret of my life.  I am sorry to those of you that I brought into NXIVM. I am sorry I ever exposed you to the nefarious and emotionally abusive schemes of a twisted man.”  Mack was once part of the inner circle of Raniere, whose group attracted millionaires and actors among its adherents. Prosecutors said she became a “master” for “slaves” whom she ordered “to perform labor, take nude photographs, and in some cases, to engage in sex acts with Raniere.”

Mack provided information to prosecutors about how Raniere encouraged “the use of demeaning and derogatory language, including racial slurs, to humiliate ‘slaves,’” the government papers said. More importantly, she provided a recording of a conversation she had with Raniere about the branding. Raniere was sentenced last year to 120 years in prison for his conviction on sex-trafficking charges.

JOKES

A young boy went up to his father and asked, “Dad, what is the difference between ‘potentially’ and ‘realistically’?”

The father thought for a moment, then answered, “Go ask your mother if she would sleep with Brad Pitt for a million dollars.

Then ask your sister if she would sleep with Brad Pitt for a million dollars, and then, ask your brother if he’d sleep with Brad Pitt for a million dollars. Come back and tell me what you learn from that.”

So the boy went to his mother and asked, “Would you sleep with Brad Pitt for a million dollars?” The mother replied, “Of course, I would! We could really use that money to fix up the kitchen and send you kids to a great university!”

The boy then went to his sister and asked, “Would you sleep with Brad Pitt for a million dollars?  The girl replied, “Oh, good heavens! I LOVE Brad Pitt and I would sleep with him in a heartbeat. Are you nuts?”

The boy then went to his brother and asked, “Would you sleep with Brad Pitt for a million dollars?” “Of course,” the brother replied. “Do you know how much a million bucks would buy?”

The boy pondered the answers for a few days and then went back to his dad. His father asked him, “so, did you find out the difference between ‘potentially’ and ‘realistically’?”

The boy replied, “Yes, ‘Potentially’ you and I are sitting on three million dollars, but ‘realistically’, we’re living with two hookers and a future congressman.”

Fosston responded in a big way in the bottom of the third as the leadoff batter reached on an error and that set the tone for the rest of the inning as they scored eight runs to take a 12-5 lead.

After a scoreless fourth inning, Crookston got back on the board in the fifth inning when Alex Longoria had a bloop single and Jacob Miller blasted a line drive down the left field line for a double to score a run to get within a 12-6 deficit.

Crookston was held scoreless in the top of the sixth inning, but Fosston started the bottom of the inning with a leadoff homerun from Trey Boushee, but that is all they would get in the inning for a 15-6 lead.

POLK COUNTY FAIR RETURNS FOR 2021

polkcountyfair-e1531712830830

The Polk County Fair in Fertile, Minnesota, is back for 2021 after COVID-19 canceled the event a year ago. The fair will run from July 7-11 in Fertile, Minnesota, at the Polk County Fair Grounds. There are plenty of fair staples as well as new events that can be found.

Secretary of the fair board Michael Moore said that everything is in place after a lot of work and planning, and they are fired up about bringing the fair back. “We’re certainly hopeful that it will be a big success, and the board itself is just fired up about it,” said Moore. “In many respects, it’s like starting over strangely enough. We booked a lot of things for 2020 we didn’t get to see, but luckily enough, we were able to carry them over to 2021.”

Moore admitted that they weren’t sure if they would receive the approval to put the fair on until recently. “The extension service that governs the 4H had a very long process and protocol, but suddenly they opened up, the governor said no more masks, and here we are.” Moore did say all people attending the fair should be practicing social distancing but that it is personal comfort. “We’re cautiously optimistic that people will enjoy it and show up,” said Moore. “We usually get crowds of 55,000 to 58,000, so we’re hoping the numbers will be similar this year.”

The fair will kick off next Wednesday on the 7th. There is a long list of events/things to do over the five days on the Polk County Fair website, but Moore highlighted a few big ones to keep in mind. “It’s a good ole standard lineup. After a couple of nights of rodeo, they have some excellent shows. Another event that is the crown jewel is the Baja Races,” said Moore. “It’s an event that the Polk County Fair created, and it’s become an event at many other local fairs.”

The Baja Races State Championship will take place Saturday night on the 10th at 6:30 p.m. Moore believes there will be roughly 120 to 140 racers competing in the event. The fair will end with a Demolition Derby and fireworks Sunday night. “Every county fair has a Demo Derby, and we’re hoping it’s a good one” said Moore. “First place is $1,200, so that’s a big size prize for someone to take home.”

Another fan favorite that will be back for the 2021 fair is the Dock Dogs. A newer event that has gone over exceptionally well with the fair crowd. “The Dock Dogs are back this year; there are a lot of area dogs and even some professionals that come in to compete in the events” said Moore. “We end up putting 66,000 gallons of water in the tank, and the dogs who are the performers put on a great show.”

There are more than just events to watch during your time at the fair, and the Hanson Memorial Stage will feature a great lineup of performers throughout the week. “We’ve got some wonderful things at the Hanson Memorial Stage, will have children groups perform, as well as three different environmental shows” said Moore. “The lineup is amazing.”

Other events throughout the week will include a 5K walk/run, a chocolate contest, and a talent show. The talent show winner will have the opportunity to go on and compete at the Minnesota State Fair in August. The Midway will also be open with a variety of different rides. You can purchase advanced tickets up until 5 p.m. on opening day.

KROX will have live broadcasts from the fair grounds 2-5 Thursday & Friday and 9-12 on Saturday. There will be trivia questions and we will also be handing out Grandstand passes all three days.
