accidentgraphic-e1541363414403-31

Earlier today, Officers of the Grand Forks Police Dept. were dispatched to an injury accident involving two vehicles near the intersection of 9th Avenue South and South Washington Street.

Reports indicated both vehicles were traveling Northbound on South Washington Street near the 900 blocks when vehicle #1, a 2011 Honda CRV driven by 22-year-old Elva Bissonette, was changing lanes and, in the process, struck the front end of a 2000 Dodge Caravan driven by 69-year-old Ronald Scott. The impact caused the Honda CRV to lose control and strike the berm. The impact with the berm then caused the vehicle to roll over onto its passenger side. All four occupants of the involved vehicles were transported to Altru with minor injuries. Bissonette was cited for Care required.

Assisting on the call was the GF Fire Department and Altru Ambulance.

GOVERNOR WALZ RELEASES STATEMENT ON FDA APPROVAL OF THE PFIZER COVID-19 VACCINE

state-of-minnesota-seal-11

Governor Tim Walz and Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan released the following statements on the Food and Drug Administration’s approval of Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine.

“The FDA’s approval of Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine is exciting news. This vaccine is safe, it’s saving lives, and now it’s fully approved,” said Governor Walz. “Today’s action gives Minnesotans additional assurance that the Pfizer vaccine is safe and effective. Along with vaccines from Moderna and Johnson & Johnson, these are the best tools we have in our fight against COVID-19. If you haven’t yet, now is the time to roll up your sleeves and get your shot.”

“With the FDA’s approval of the Pfizer vaccine, Minnesotans can have even more confidence in getting this shot. These vaccines are highly effective at preventing severe illness and death, and they have been thoroughly evaluated to ensure it’s safe for Americans and Minnesotans to roll up their sleeves,” said Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan. “If you have been waiting for FDA approval to get your vaccine, today is your day to join the 3.2 million Minnesotans who have gotten their shot.”

“We welcome today’s announcement because we know full approval from FDA will give a boost of confidence to some who had not yet been vaccinated,” said Minnesota Commissioner of Health Jan Malcolm. “Pfizer and the other COVID-19 vaccines are our most important tools for moving past the pandemic and getting back to where we want to be. We encourage everyone who is eligible but unvaccinated to get it done for their own benefit and for the benefit of their family and friends.”

The Pfizer vaccine is now approved for Americans 16 years of age and older. The vaccine continues to be available to Americans between 12 and 15 years of age under an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA). Two other vaccines – the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine and the two-dose Moderna vaccine – are authorized for Americans 18 years of age and older. FDA is continuing its review and approval process for these two vaccines as well as for use of Pfizer in people younger than 16.

Defense secretary orders emergency use of 18 US commercial aircrafts to transport Afghan evacuees

shutterstock_693382546

On Sunday, defense Secretary Lloyd Austin ordered the emergency use of 18 U.S. commercial aircrafts to transport Afghan evacuees out of Kabul. The U.S. continues to evacuate Americans and Afghan people with special immigrant visas, a week since the Taliban entered Afghanistan’s capital city and Afghan President Ashraf Ghani fled. Seventeen thousand people have been taken out of Afghanistan in the past week; however, the scene at Hamid Karzai International Airport remains chaotic.

The Defense Department is acting under Stage I of the Civil Reserve Air Fleet (CRAF) and confirmed the commercial aircraft wouldn’t be flying in and out of Kabul.  Instead, officials say the planes will move evacuees “from bases in Germany, Qatar and Bahrain to ease overcrowding pressure and transport bottlenecks.”

Among the airlines who will provide commercial aircrafts are American Airlines, Atlas Air, Delta Air Lines and Omni Air, each of which will contribute three planes; Hawaiian Airlines, which will contribute two; and United Airlines, four.

Death Toll reaches 22 with dozens still missing in catastrophic Tennessee Flooding

shutterstock_690025837

The death toll has risen to 22 in catastrophic flooding in Middle Tennessee over the weekend. Twelve additional deaths were reported by the sheriff in Humphreys County on Sunday, adding to the 10 confirmed Saturday night. The number of missing is now estimated at 50, with the hardest-hit area being 40 miles west of Nashville.

Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee said during a Sunday evening press conference: “It is a devastating picture of loss and heartbreak in one of our Tennessee communities.”  The state of Tennessee activated its Emergency Operations Center as searchers continued to look for survivors on Sunday. At least 100 homes and 25 businesses had been searched as of 10 a.m. Sunday, while multiple bridges and roadways remained close in the area. More than 10,000 customers were without power.

Between 15 and 17 inches of rain was reported in 24 hours in areas around Dickson, Houston, Humphreys and Hickman counties. The flooding from the torrential rainfall trapped residents in their homes, closed highways and prompted multiple water rescues, where people took to their roofs and attics to escape the floodwaters. Homes were swept away and communities destroyed. The Tennessee National Guard has also deployed soldiers and airmen to the area in response to the flooding. Three helicopter aquatic rescue teams from the state, as well as swift water rescue teams from Nashville, were also sent to assist.
