Officials confirmed on Monday that another Washington, D.C. police officer who responded to the Jan. 6 riot at the capitol died by suicide. Officer Gunther Hashida, 43, was found dead at his home last Thursday. He is the third police officer who responded to the Capitol attack to die by suicide.

Metropolitan Police Department spokeswoman Brianna Burch said: “We are grieving as a department as our thoughts and prayers are with Officer Hashida’s family and friends.” Hashida joined the Metropolitan Police Department in May 2003 and was assigned to the emergency response team within the special operations division at the time of his death. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued a statement sending “deepest condolences” to Hashida’s family and loved ones. “Officer Hashida was a hero, who risked his life to save our Capitol, the Congressional community and our very Democracy. All Americans are indebted to him for his great valor and patriotism on Jan. 6 throughout his selfless service,” she said.

Metropolitan Police Officer Jeffrey Smith, a 12-year veteran, and U.S. Capitol Police Officer Howard Liebengood, a 16-year veteran, also died after responding to the insurrection. Capitol Police officer Brian Sicknick, who also responded to the attack, died of natural causes after experiencing strokes.

shutterstock_1511172881

Comedian Kathy Griffin took to social media on Monday to share that she has been diagnosed with stage one lung cancer. Shortly before going into surgery, the 60-year-old Griffin wrote that she would have “half of my left lung removed,” adding, “Yes, I have lung cancer even though I’ve never smoked! The doctors are very optimistic as it is stage one and contained to my left lung.”

A representative for Griffin said in statement later on Monday: “Surgery went well and as planned, Kathy is now in recovery now and resting. Doctors say the procedure was normal without any surprises.”

Griffin said in her Instagram post that she’s hopeful that she won’t require chemotherapy or radiation after the surgery, adding, “I should have normal function with my breathing.”  She said her recovery time would be a month or less, writing: “It’s been a helluva 4 years, trying to get back to work, making you guys laugh and entertaining you, but I’m gonna be just fine. Of course I am fully vaccinated for Covid. The consequences for being unvaccinated would have been even more serious. Please stay up to date on your medical check ups. It’ll save your life.”

2ND WELCOME TO CROOKSTON SIGN TO BE COMPLETE SOMETIME THIS MONTH

new-sign-424x420-1

The second “Welcome to Crookston Sign” will be completed sometime this month. The first sign went up early in July on Highway 2 near the railroad tracks coming into Crookston from the West. The second sign will be located near Titan Machinery and on Highway 75 coming into town from Climax.

Crookston High School Industrial Education Instructor Travis Oliver has had a big hand in making the sign and said the framework for it is complete. “I planned to actually have the first sign and then this one up together at the same time, but a vinyl sleeve cover got on backorder, unfortunately, which made that not possible,” said Oliver. “Once I got that in, I was able to get going on it, and my dad and I were able to get the backdrop in place, and now Custom Collision will go out there and get the aluminum board in place.”

Oliver also said the hope is to eventually get a couple of more signs in place coming into Crookston near Draft’s Sports Bar & Grill and near Christian Brother’s Ford on the southside of town. “Those are high traffic areas that could use a sign,” said Oliver. “Just talking to the committee down the road, it would be nice to include one by Draft’s, and maybe even something a little different from the signs we’ve put up so far. The feedback has been very positive on the signs we have up, but if other ideas were presented, we would potentially go a different route.”

Once Custom Collision can get out to the second sign and get the aluminum bar in place, all that will be left is the landscaping and ensuring that the lights are functioning.

Oliver said he expects, at the very latest, the sign to be up and fully complete by the beginning of Ox Cart Days later this month. “I wouldn’t doubt that custom goes out early this week and takes care of their part of the project,” said Oliver. “At that point, it’s just the landscaping, and I’m sure it’ll be done by Ox Cart Days, with the potential for it to be completed as soon as the end of this week.”

KLOBUCHAR URGING THE USDA TO DEPLOY AIR RESOURCE ADVISORS IN AREAS OF MINNESOTA AFFECTED BY WILDFIRES

amy-klobechur

U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) sent a letter to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) urging the department to deploy Air Resource Advisors (ARAs) from the Interagency Wildland Fire Air Quality Response Program (IWFAQRP) to areas in Minnesota affected by summer wildfires.

In the letter, Klobuchar highlighted the urgent need for this assistance, noting that “MPCA [Minnesota Pollution Control Agency] has indicated that unhealthy to very unhealthy conditions are expected to persist through next week and continue to threaten public health.”

The full letter can be found below

Dear Secretary Vilsack:

Thank you for your ongoing work to monitor and control the spread of summer wildfires that are severely impacting Minnesota’s air quality, forest resources, and ability to continue to provide outdoor recreational opportunities. Like so many Minnesotans, I am especially concerned about recent reports of wildfire smoke from Canadian wildfires near the Winnipeg-Ontario border that have drifted south and created hazy and unhealthy air quality conditions throughout the state.

In order to communicate timely information about the impacts of wildfire smoke, I respectfully urge you to deploy Air Resource Advisors (ARAs) from the Interagency Wildland Fire Air Quality Response Program (IWFAQRP) to affected areas in Minnesota.

On Thursday, July 29, the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) reported the highest particulate air quality levels ever recorded in the state since reporting began in 2000. Furthermore, MPCA has indicated that unhealthy to very unhealthy conditions are expected to persist through next week and continue to threaten public health.

These unprecedented air quality conditions are an infrequent occurrence in Minnesota and many residents understandably have questions about the safety of outdoor activity, including for those with pre-existing conditions like asthma or heart conditions. Additionally, first responders, wildfire response teams, and other air quality officials are in need of real-time information about risks posed by fire smoke while they continue their critical work during this natural disaster.

The United States Forest Service operates the IWFAQRP to directly assess, communicate, and address the public health and safety risks associated with wildfire smoke to the general public, first responders, and firefighting personnel. While ARAs are currently deployed across several western states, the extraordinary air quality conditions in Minnesota require additional technical support.

For these reasons, I respectfully urge you to deploy ARAs from the IWFAQRP to Minnesota to assist with analyzing and predicting smoke impacts during this ongoing air quality event. I look forward to working with you to address this urgent matter.

NEW KAYAK & CANOE LAUNCHES UP AND RUNNING ON THE RED LAKE RIVER

kayak-1-580x420-1

New Kayak and Canoe launches can be found throughout the City of Crookston on the Red Lake River. There are a few main locations that went up back in May of this year, and according to Parks & Recreation Supervisor Scott Butt, the plan would be to install more down the road if the city can receive another grant.

Butt talked about the reasoning to put the launches in place and its benefit to the community. “The biggest thing that went into this decision and process was that the money came from the Red Lake River Corridor grant system,” said Butt. “We were able to put up the kayak launches as well as the fishing piers out of the grant money, and it will really add a more accessible way to get on the river for everyone. Before, the only access to the river was near where the boat landing was on the bypass road, or Central Park.”

Some of the launches are handicap accessible and will give people a much easier way to get onto the river without the hassle they once experienced. The main locations are located near Wildflower Park across from Riverview Hospital in Crookston, another one-off Woodland if you go up and over the bank. There is also a pad located near Highway 2 and 9, where you can walk out and go into the river.

Butt talked about how Kayakers and canoers can make their trip on the river as long or short as they want, now that there are multiple locations spread out on the river. “You can make your day, as long of a voyage as you want or as short as you want,” said Butt. “There are plenty of points where you can get on and off at several spots, and in my opinion, it has turned things into a much easier and user-friendly situation.”

Each launch has instructions on using and easily getting in and out of the river with ease. Butt helped install the launches around Mother’s Day and talked about what took place during that process. “The original installation was done by the company we bought them from,” said Butt. “When we then take them out to put them in the water, we try and take them out in as big of pieces as we can, but there are always other little pieces that will need to be put together. The hardest part is getting them down to the river itself; once that is accomplished, installing them goes fairly smooth.”

Butt also talked about the things they consider when installing the launches and what can affect the process. “You are kind of at mother nature’s discretion as far as when you can get them into the river,” said Butt. “It’s also one of those deals where you have to look at the river level to determine how far in or out they need to go, and at the same time, you need to remember the ramp leading down to the launch can only go so far out. So those are all things that are considered during that process to make sure we do it right and that it’s easy for the people to access.”

Butt says the goal is to always get the launches in as early as possible, but that the weather plays a role in the timing every year. Butt believes the addition of the launches will be a great benefit to the community. “Those are the main locations, and I really feel they’re a great benefit to the community.”
