Government report says baby foods found with high levels of toxins failed to be recalled by manufacturers

shutterstock_552234220

A new government report out Wednesday from the House Subcommittee on Economic and Consumer Policy finds more cases of major manufacturers selling baby food with high levels of toxic heavy metals, just eight months after a congressional report shed light on the issue of toxins in baby food. The report describes dangerous levels of arsenic, lead, cadmium, mercury and other toxins, which can be particularly dangerous to developing babies and toddlers.

Investigators said two of Gerber’s Infant Rice Cereal products contained inorganic arsenic levels over the Food and Drug Administration’s limit. They said Gerber “failed to recall” those products. Most of Plum Organics’ products contained heavy metals too, including popular Superpuff snacks.  Illinois Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi, the chairman of the economic and consumer policy subcommittee, said: “No level of toxic heavy metals and exposure to them is safe for a baby.”  Krishnamoorthi wants stronger federal standards, saying of the manufactures: “They haven’t so far shown either the capacity or the willingness to regulate themselves. You need a federal regulator in the form of FDA to be regulating them closely.”

The FDA’s “closer to zero” program would set allowable federal levels for some heavy metals, but final guidance isn’t scheduled until 2024.  Krishnamoorthi wants to have some of those timelines moved up, but the agency said “it’s crucial that measures to limit toxic elements in foods do not have unintended consequences.”

CDC urges pregnant women to get COVID-19 vaccination

shutterstock_1912547161

According to data released Wednesday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, fewer than one-third of pregnant women in the United States are fully vaccinated against COVID-19. More than 125,000 confirmed cases of the virus were reported among those pregmant, of which 22,000 required hospitalization and 161 died, including 22 deaths in August alone. Pregnant women who experience illness, with symptoms, are twice as likely to be admitted to a hospital intensive care unit and 70% more likely to die from the disease.

CDC Director Dr. Rochelle P. Walensky said in a press release: “Pregnancy can be both a special time and also a stressful time — and pregnancy during a pandemic is an added concern for families. I strongly encourage those who are pregnant or considering pregnancy to talk with their healthcare provider about the protective benefits of the COVID-19 vaccine to keep their babies and themselves safe.” CDC research found that the COVID-19 vaccines from Johnson & Johnson, Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech are all safe for people who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Given this evidence, the CDC issued an urgent health advisory last month to increase COVID-19 vaccination among those who are pregnant, recently pregnant, trying to become pregnant or who might become pregnant. Vaccination can help prevent serious illness, deaths and adverse pregnancy outcomes caused by COVID-19.

Lori Loughlin to return to acting for the first time since college admissions scandal

shutterstock_1145649638

Lori Loughlin is retuning to the acting world nearly two and a half years since the college admissions scandal. In 2019, the actress and her husband Mossimo Giannulli were accused of paying $500,000 to secure their two daughters, Olivia Jade Giannulli and Isabella Giannulli, spots at the University of Southern California as crew recruits – though neither played the sport. The couple pleaded guilty, and Loughlin spent two months in California’s Victorville Federal Correctional Institution for conspiracy charges; her husband, Mossimo Giannulli, was sentenced to five month in prison.

The 57-year-old actress will guest star on Season 2 of the “When Calls the Heart” spinoff “When Hope Calls”.  Loughlin will reprise her original role from the series, Abigail Stanton, and will appear in the two-part season premiere, which will air exclusively on GAC Family on Saturday, December 18. After the controversy surrounding Loughlin made headlines in 2019, “When Calls The Heart” wrote her character off, explaining that Abigail Stanton decided to travel from their Canada hometown to the East Coast with her son Cody to care for her ill mother.

Judge suspends Britney Spears’ father Jamie as conservator of her estate after 13 years

shutterstock_1458607544

A judge on Wednesday suspended Britney Spears’ father, Jamie Spears, from the conservatorship that has controlled the singer’s life and money for 13 years. Superior Court Judge Brenda Penny agreed with a petition from Spears and her attorney, Mathew Rosengart, that James “Jamie” Spears needs to give up his role as conservator. The move is a major victory for Ms. Spears, who pleaded during hearings held in June and July that her father needed to be removed as conservator. After hearing arguments from both sides, judge Penny said: “The current situation is untenable. It reflects a toxic environment which requires the suspension of James Spears.”

James Spears sought the conservatorship in 2008 and had been its primary controller; however, he reversed course in recent weeks, asking the judge to end the conservatorship. Britney Spears and her attorney Rosengart emphasized in court papers the importance of removing her father, calling it a necessary first step toward her freedom.  Jodi Montgomery, a court-appointed professional, now acts as conservator of Britney Spears’ person, and Rosengart said in court documents that Montgomery also consents to ending the conservatorship so long as it can be done safely and smoothly. The conservatorship was established in 2008 when Britney Spears’ began to have public mental struggles as the press and paparazzi aggressively followed her.

SPORTS FEEVER – September 30, 2021

sportsfeever-logo-5

Welcome to another addition of the Sports Feever column.  We are a week away from the first fall sports tournament with a fast and furious October to follow.  We are down to two-and-a-half weeks left in the regular football season after Friday.  Wow….maybe just in time as more and more COVID cases are popping up in schools around the area and state.  The biggest challenge for teams over the next month will be staying COVID-19 free.   Good luck, and best of luck to all teams on staying healthy the rest of the season and school year!

— — —

The QRF’s are out for football and this is how the area sections look at the halfway point. The QRF is provided by www.minnesota-scores.net.

Section 6 9-man –
The Section is shaping up to be something pretty interesting.  There are five teams all fighting for the top seed in the final four regular-season games.  Even though Fertile-Beltrami is 4-0 and beat Nevis last week, they are in second place.  The tie-breaker goes to Fertile-Beltrami so technically if the season ended today they would be ahead of Frazee.  But Norman County East/Ulen-Hitterdal is also 4-0 and Clearbrook-Gonvick and Blackduck are both 3-1.  Every game is a big game the rest of the season for playoff seeding.
1. Nevis 3-1 (26.6)
2. Fertile-Beltrami 4-0 (24.9)
3. NCE/UH 4-0  (21.0)
4. Clearbrook-Gonvick 3-1 (18.3)
5. Blackduck 3-1  (18.3)
6. Park Christian 1-3  (12.4)
7. Laporte 0-4  (4.8)
8. Cass Lake-Bena 0-4  (3.9)

Section 8 9-man –
Section 8 9-man is another wild one.  Warren-Alvarado-Oslo is the leader halfway through the season with a 4-0 record.  Goodridge-Grgyla is right behind in second place with a 2-2 record, and 3-1 Win-E-Mac and KCC come in at three and four.  Again a lot of big games left in the regular season.
1. Warren-Alvarado-Oslo 4-0 (22.3)
2. Goodridge-Grgyla  2-2  (18.6)
3. Win-E-Mac 3-1  (15.2)
4. Kittson County Central 3-1  (14.8)
5. Badger/Greenbush-Middle River  2-2  (11.2)
6. Stephen-Argyle  0-4  (4.4)
7. Northern Freeze 0-4  (3.9)
8. Lake of the Woods  0-4  (3.1)

Section 8A –
The Section 8A battle for the top seed will come on Friday night.  Polk County West and Ada-Borup-West will battle in East Grand Forks on the turf.  Ada-Borup-West beat Mahnomen-Waubun last Friday and now they play PCW.  If Ada-Borup-West wins, I don’t see how they couldn’t be the top seed unless they lost some games in the final weeks.  The loser of the PCW and ABW game will be fighting with Mahnomen-Waubun for the second seed and Red Lake County looks like they are locked in at the fourth seed.
1. Polk County West  4-0   (38.9)
2. Ada-Borup-West  4-0  (38.1)
3. Mahnomen-Waubun  3-1 (33.3)
4. Red Lake County 2-2  (16.9)
5. Fosston 0-4  (5.9)
6. Bagley  0-4  (4.7)
7. Red Lake  0-3  (3.7)

Section 8AA –
Section 8AA is wide-open at this point with the top four teams all within six QRF points of each other.  Barnesville beat Pelican Rapids earlier this year and they still have Hawley on the schedule.  A win over Hawley could solidify a top seed, but Barnesville also plays Detroit Lakes that will give them some “bonus points” if they win.  This will be interesting to see how it goes.
1. Barnesville  2-2 (31.8)
2. Pelican Rapids  3-1  (30.8)
3. Hawley 2-2  (25.6)
4. Warroad  2-2  (25.2)
5. Crookston  1-3  (15.3)
6. Frazee  1-3  (12.1)

Section 8AAA –
In Section 8AAA DGF is the top dog and has looked impressive so far this season.  Perham and Fergus Falls are both 3-1, but have a few points between the two.  The seeding for the playoffs could look like it does right now.
1. Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton  4-0  (64.1)
2. Perham  3-1  (51.0)
3. Fergus Falls  3-1  (44.9)
4. East Grand Forks  2-2  (29.5)
5. Thief River Falls  1-3  (26.9)
6. Park Rapids  1-3  (16.6)
7. Roseau  0-4  (2.7)

After coming off an NSIC Final Four Tournament appearance, the University of Minnesota  Crookston Golden Eagle baseball team is extremely excited for the upcoming school year and season.  “Wednesday night we are hosting a fund drive to raise dollars for a February trip against the University of Hawaii Pacific. This trip is outside of our typical game schedule and our guys are excited,” said Head Coach, Steve Gust.

Gust went on to state that it is the support from many that ensures they have the ability to keep building the tradition of excellence while establishing a legacy within the University of Minnesota Crookston baseball program. “Each player has a goal of a thousand dollars, any support you are able to provide is greatly appreciated,” Gust said.

JOKES

A man is walking through the mall with his teenage son. The son is tossing a quarter up in the air and catching it between his teeth. On one such attempt, the boy fails to clamp down with his teeth and ends up getting the quarter lodged in his throat. As the boy begins to choke and wheeze the father panics and starts yelling for help.
Not to far from the action is a man sitting at a coffee shop reading a paper and drinking his coffee, when he hears the fathers distressed cries he patiently puts down his coffee and folds his paper, he then walks slowly over to the boy and grabs him by the balls and squeezes the heck out of them. The boy coughs up the quarter and the man catches it in his hand and proceeds to walk away with it, sitting back down to his coffee.
The amazed father runs over and says, “Thank you Sir, you saved my son’s life. Are you a Doctor?”
“No,” the man replies, “I work for the IRS.”

A man walking along a California beach was deep in prayer. All of a sudden, he said out loud, “Lord, grant me one wish.”

Suddenly the sky clouded above his head and in a booming voice, the Lord said, “Because you have TRIED to be faithful to me in all ways, I will grant you one wish.”

The man said, “Build a bridge to Hawaii, so I can drive over anytime I want to.”

The Lord said, “Your request is very materialistic. Think of the logistics of that kind of undertaking. The supports required to reach the bottom of the Pacific! The concrete and steel it would take! I can do it, but is hard for me to justify your desire for worldly things. Take a little more time and think of another wish. A wish you think would honor and glorify me.”

The man thought about it for a long time. Finally, he said, “Lord, I wish that I could understand women. I want to know how they feel inside, what they are thinking when they give me the silent treatment, why they cry, what they mean when they say ‘nothing,’ and how I can make a woman truly happy.”

After a few minutes, God said, “You want two lanes or four on that bridge?”

Two old friends met for the first time in several years. They had a good talk and one asked, “Is your wife still as pretty as ever?”
“She sure is,” the other replied. “It just takes her longer.”

CROOKSTON FIRE DEPARTMENT HOSTING OPEN HOUSE OCTOBER 9 FOR FIRE PREVENTION WEEK

crookston-firefighters

The Crookston Fire Department will celebrate Fire Prevention Week by hosting an open house on Saturday, October 9. This year’s theme for the week is “Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety.” Fire Prevention Week is from October 3 to October 9 this year.

Crookston Fire Department Captain Bob Magsam says he would love to see many members of the public show up for the event. “The Open House like we’ve done in the past will be held at the Main Fire Station,” said Magsam. “We invite the general public, adults and kids alike, to show up, have a little fun and meet your local firefighters.”

The event will be from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. and will offer a variety of activities for everyone to enjoy. There will also be refreshments such as chips, hot dogs, and juice available throughout the day.

The Fire Department puts on an Open House every year during Fire Prevention Week, and Magsam mentioned a few of the activities offered this year. “Our always favorite Ladder Truck Bucket Ride will be available so people can go up into the air and get a good view of our community,” said Magsam. “There will be station tours and equipment tours; the Fire Department has been blessed in getting some new equipment, so will get to explain that to the public. There will also be an opportunity for kids to spray a fire hose and try on a set of Firefighting gear.”

There will also be fire safety brochures handed out and an opportunity to sign up for a free in-home fire safety inspection.

Another thing the Fire Department will be doing throughout Fire Prevention Week is heading into the local schools to talk to kids about Fire Safety. Due to COVID-19, the department couldn’t take advantage of this opportunity last year.

Magsam talked about the opportunity to talk to kids about the importance of fire safety and what will be discussed. “We try and do it every year if we can, and we go in and discuss fire safety tips and fire prevention with the 1st-6th graders at all the public and private schools in Crookston,” said Magsam. “We follow that theme and things that are related to the fire prevention week.”

Magsam said that the Kindergartners from the different schools are also welcomed to come down to the Fire Department during the week and learn about Fire Safety. “The Kindergartners are encouraged to come to the Fire Station during the week, and we give them a tour of the facility,” said Magsam. “We also do some fire drills with them and talk about some fire safety tips.”

The schedule for the Fire Department with the schools they’ll be visiting next week is down below. The Open House on October 9 is free, and the Fire Department encourages the public to attend.

  • Monday, October 4: Cathedral School
  • Tuesday, October 5: Our Saviors Lutheran School
  • Wednesday, October 6: Highland Elementary School, Washington School
