Actress Olivia Munn and comedian John Mulaney expecting their first child together

shutterstock_1688207860

Comedian John Mulaney revealed that he and actress Olivia Munn, who began dating earlier this year, are expecting a baby together. Mulaney appeared on “Late Night with Seth Meyers”, and opened up about the past year — which included a drug relapse, rehabilitation, a divorce from ex-wife Anna Marie Tendler, and his relationship with Munn.

Mulaney said of Munn, “She held my hand through that hell, and we are having a baby, together. I’m gonna be a dad! I’m really — we’re both really, really happy.” He also shared how Munn has helped keep him sober and healthy as he recovers from addiction, saying, “Olivia and this baby have helped save me from myself.”

John and Olivia initially met at Meyer’s wedding in 2013, but the couple’s relationship did not begin until May, shortly after Mulaney and his ex-wife of six years had split.   The baby will be the first child for both John and Olivia.

The first Minnesota State High School football, volleyball, soccer, and tennis polls are out and they are available by clicking below-

Minnesota High School Polls

— — —

With high school sports still in the first two or three weeks of competition, I will hold off on some thoughts on how things are shaping up so far until next week, possibly a week later.

I will give some thoughts on Pirate athletics though.

Football – One game is in the books. It was a struggle on the line against a solid Osakis team and the offense wasn’t able to do much if anything.  It will get tougher this week against Barnesville.

Volleyball – They beat Bagley in the first match of the season in five sets.  They have struggled since.  They haven’t had a full lineup yet and are still working on getting on the same page.  Coach Englestad is doing a nice job and is as competitive as the girls, if not more, and she will get them to figure it out soon.

Soccer –
Boys soccer has struggled offensively and that doesn’t come as a surprise, even though they have had a pretty easy schedule so far.  They lost their top scorer from last years team and nobody was close, so it will take a while to get the offense going, if they can.

Girls Soccer is 2-2 and are coming off a seven-goal performance.  They have some great athletes and if they can get all their players to put the team first and not miss any more games for a myriad of reasons, they could make a run.

Girls tennis – The Pirates only have one loss so far this season and they are a favorite to win the Section 8A championship, but Staples-Motley will be tough and Park Rapids showed they will be a very tough opponent too.

Girls Swimming – Crookston has 13 girls out this year and they have started a little slow against some good competition.  The girls always show solid improvement and you can’t look at team scores to see how they are doing.  You have to look at the individual times to watch the improvement early on.

Last week we told you about Alex Gullingsrud, son of area official Michael Gullingsrud and Red Lake Falls Volleyball coach Nicki.
After going in for testing the doctors found a tumor on his pelvic bone.  Alex and his family found out that it is Osteosarcoma on the tumor on his right pelvic bone. They also found two very small nodules in his left lung. These nodules are concerning, as it could be something that has spread from the tumor on his hip.

On September 3 – Alex had surgery and a port was put in place.

On September 4 – Alex started chemotherapy

The latest update on September 8 – After 3 rough days in a row, he is feeling quite a bit better today and has been able to keep food/drink down.

Local fundraising for Alex’s family can now be done thanks to Dakota Heritage Bank in Red Lake Falls. Monetary donations can be sent to:
Alex Gullingsrud Benefit Account

PO Box 340
Red Lake Falls, MN 56750

Our friends at the Grygla School will be hosting a fundraiser for the Ryan and Jennifer (Saurdiff) Wichterman and the Mike and Nicole Gullingsrud families on Saturday, October 16th, beginning at 8:00, in conjunction with the Frostbite Volleyball Tournament.

Both families have children, Dylan Wichterman, 13, and Alex Gullingsrud, 8, who are battling Cancer.  They both face several trips to the Mayo Clinic for treatment and appointments.

We ask that you come out to support these area families by supporting the Bingo, silent and live auctions, Beef Brisket dinner and bake sale.  You can order t-shirts at:

https://docs.google.com/…/1FAIpQLSePEZ…/viewform…

T-shirts are $20.  $8 per t-shirt will go directly to the two families.

Major Division 1 student-athletes in the big sports like football and basketball continue to get good news as more and more donors and businesses are chipping in money, cars, and everything else towards the student-athletes.

The latest –

Michigan State football and men’s basketball players will receive $500 monthly stipend after a donor gave money to make it happen.

Six Ohio State football players – defensive linemen Haskell Garrett and Zach Harrison, wide receiver Chris Olave, linebacker Teradja Mitchell, quarterback C.J. Stroud and running back Miyan Williams – received new cars for the 2021 season from Coughlin Chevrolet of Pataskala as part of a partnership with the dealership.

The cars have been leased to the players only through the end of the football season, though players who return to Ohio State for the 2022 season will have the option to extend their partnerships with the dealership.

As part of the partnership, the football players will also participate in toy drives, fundraisers and other community outreach in addition to promoting the dealership.

Two take aways from the Wisconsin vs Penn State football game on Saturday.  It was a solid game with both teams struggling on offense, but they kept showing the crowd during the game, especially when they went to the awesome game ritual of “Jump Around” while playing House of Pains Jump Around.  I noticed something…..there were a lot of unattractive people in the stands.  Just putting that out there……It is a classic case of the Pot calling the Kettle black, but just my thoughts.

Also, I was a little disappointed in the Badgers fans with their game day numbers, as far as arrests go.

Final UWPD stats from 9/4/21 Wisconsin vs. Penn State football game:
12 citations (10 underage alcohol)
22 ejections
21 paramedic calls
30 first aid calls
1 ambulance transport
1 detox transport
1 contact with .20 BAC or higher

Speaking of college football, the new Texas Longhorn football stadium has a symbol that happens to look like something else.  Texas has been in the news for something pretty controversial this past week (if you need a hint)……..See if you see it.

What an opening week for high school football in Minnesota.

Two of the top programs in Class AA, Caledonia and Barnesville, both lost on Friday night.  Barnesville lost to West Central 14-12 in Barrette, and Caledonia lost to Lake City 30-13.  The Caledonia loss snapped the nation’s current longest winning streak at 71 games.  The streak came up short of Stephen-Argyle’s 76 game winning streak that was snapped on October 31, 2008 when Kittson County Central “finally” beat the Storm in the Section 8 9-Man championship at the Alerus Center in Grand Forks.
Speaking of the Storm, they lost to Norman County East/Ulen-Hitterdal on Friday afternoon.  I wonder if the Storm, Barnesville, and Caledonia have ever lost on the same day before?  Probably not in the last 30 years.

UMC Volleyball played four matches last weekend at Colorado State University-Pueblo’s tournament.  I watched all four matches on the live stream and I liked the improvement I saw from the team as the tournament progressed.  They have a lot of new players, so there is a learning curve as far as learning to play with each other.
The Golden Eagles played their best match of the weekend in their final match and led 2-1 over CSU-Pueblo, but ran out of gas in the fourth and fifth set.  UMC will have an important match, in all honesty, a must-win as they travel to Minot State in the Northern Sun Conference opener on Tuesday, September 14.

The NSIC has announced the dates, formats and locations for the 2021-22 league championships and post-season tournaments.

The biggest change comes in the Women’s and Men’s Basketball tournaments.  The NSIC is split into 8 teams in the north and 8 teams in the south.  The bottom two teams (7th and 8th seed) will NOT make the playoffs this year and the top two teams from each division will get a bye.

The NSIC sponsors 18 sports, with teams advancing to post-season tournaments in the sports of soccer, volleyball, men’s & women’s basketball, baseball, softball, and women’s tennis.  Championship meets are held in the sports of men’s & women’s cross country, women’s swimming & diving, men’s and women’s indoor/outdoor track & field, and men’s & women’s golf. Football and wrestling regular-season championships are based on regular-season standings, with no NSIC post-season tournament.

JOKES

A man came home from an exhausting day at work, plopped down on the couch in front of the television, and told his wife: “Get me a beer before it starts!”

The wife sighed and got him a beer.

Ten minutes later, he said: “Get me another beer before it starts!”

She looked cross, but fetched another beer and slammed it down next to him. He finished that beer and a few minutes later said: “Quick, get me another beer, it’s going to start any minute!”

The wife was furious. “Is that all you’re going to do tonight! Drink beer and sit in front of that TV! You’re nothing but a lazy, drunken, fat slob and furthermore…”

The man sighed and said: “It’s started.”

Two life-long friends were enjoying a few pints down at the local bar, when one said to the other: “If I ask you a question, will you promise to answer me honestly?”
“Yeah, sure thing,” replied his friend, “fire away.”

“Well,” said the first guy, “why do you think all the guys around here find my wife so attractive?”

“It’s probably because of her speech impediment,” replied the second guy.

“What do you mean her speech impediment?”

inquired the first fellow.

“My wife doesn’t have a speech impediment!”

“Well,” replied his friend, “you must be the only guy who hasn’t noticed that she can’t say ‘NO’!!”

NEW TEACHERS IN THE CROOKSTON SCHOOL DISTRICT – PART 3

molly-cordes

The Crookston Public Schools District has many new faces joining its staff for the 2021-2022 school year. KROX has been introducing you to the new teachers throughout the week.  Below is an introduction of the third and final group of new teachers.

MOLLY CORDES

Molly Cordes is a new 5th Grade Teacher at Highland Elementary School for the upcoming year. Cordes is from Henning, Minnesota, and graduated from the University of Minnesota Crookston, bringing her to Highland.

Cordes talked about what she’s hoping to see from her students this upcoming year. “I just hope to see growth from them,” said Cordes. “Definitely in reading and math but other subjects as well. Seeing the growth from the beginning of the year to the end is the big thing.”

Cordes says she became a teacher because of her want to help people and feels teaching comes naturally to her.

KAITLYN BORAH

Kaitlyn Borah will also be working at Highland Elementary School this year as a 1st Grade Teacher. Borah is originally from Frazee, Minnesota, and hopes she can help make her students want to be at school and fall in love with learning.

Borah says she always has had a love for learning, and that was a big reason she got into teaching herself. “I’ve always wanted to be a teacher because I really loved being in school myself,” said Borah. “I always thought my teachers were the sweetest people ever, and that has a lot to do with why I wanted to start.”

Borah also talked more about what led her to Highland this year. “I have never been to Crookston before, but every time I would drive through, I just loved the whole town,” said Borah. “The community just seems knit together, and I just thought it was a great place to be.”

REBECCA AAKER

Rebecca Aaker, who also goes by Becca, will be a new 4th Grade Teacher at Highland Elementary School this year. Aaker is from Fargo, North Dakota, and attended Augsburg University in the Twin Cities. She taught around the Minneapolis area before moving back closer to the Fargo area to be near family.

Aaker talked about her aspirations this school year after a school year that was anything but normal. “I think just coming out of a Covid year, we need to build community and focus on the social and emotional aspect of the students,” said Aaker. “Creating that sense of community for kids and reestablishing that is important to me because it’s something that has gone off to the side throughout the pandemic.”

Aaker says she fell in love with Crookston and loves their mission and goals for their students. Aakers hopes to continue working in general education and loves 4th grade because the students can have meaningful conversations while still being curious about learning new things.

16TH ANNUAL RED RIVER VALLEY SUGARBEET MUSEUM HARVEST FESTIVAL HAPPENING THIS SUNDAY

sugarbeet-musuem-2

The 16th Annual Red River Valley Sugarbeet Museum Harvest Festival will be this weekend on Sunday, September 12, from 10:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Red River Valley Sugarbeet Museum in Crookston. Admission for the event is free and will feature activities and events for those in attendance.

President of the Sugarbeet Museum Board of Directors Allan Dragseth talked about the origin of the event. “We started the Museum back in 2004, 17 years ago, and have had a Harvest Festival ever since,” said Dragseth. “Most years, we harvest beets with vintage equipment as well as wheat with a threshing machine. This year will just be doing Sugarbeets because we couldn’t find wheat tall enough due to the drought over the summer.”

The Harvest festival was canceled last year because of COVID-19, and the Sugarbeet Museum only had a tractor pull. There will once again be a tractor pull this year at 12:00 p.m., and the harvesting of the sugarbeets will begin at 11:00 a.m.

There will also be “people movers” available at the festival, and Dragseth explained more of what that means “The last two years we’ve gotten wagons from the UMC Research Farm, and they have benches on them for people to sit and watch the harvesting of the Sugarbeets,” said Dragseth. “We drive right alongside the Beet harvesters, and it’s especially valuable for older people like me who can’t walk in a rough field anymore.”

The event also honors a person or family every year, and this year it will honor the migrants who used to come up from Texas many years ago to thin the Beets and help harvest them. They are no longer needed; however, the Museum felt it was necessary to honor them for all their hard work over the past 50 years in helping keep the Sugarbeet Industry moving forward.

The Polk County Historical Society Museum will also be hosting their event “Pioneer Day” on September 12, beginning at 11:00 a.m. A free bus will run between the Historical Society Museum and Sugarbeet Museum throughout the day so that everyone can take in both events.

Dragseth talked more about the bus and the reason for it. “It will continuously be running back and forth between the two buildings all day,” said Dragseth. “We also have more parking available in our lot so people can park at our site and catch the bus to head over to the Polk County Museum, and then come back to our event.”

There will also be food available for those who want lunch. For years the Harvest Festival has had a pulled pork sandwich and potato salad meal. After not having the festival last year, they decided to switch things up, and they’ll be having a food truck serving Pulled Pork and a few other items. Admission is free, but the food truck will cost money for all who want to eat.

University of Minnesota Extension will be hosting a summer field day at Golden Sunrise Dairy, 31328 290 Street SW, McIntosh, Minnesota, on September 22.

Golden Sunrise Dairy is owned and managed by Tim Rolf and his son, Derek. In 2020, they moved into a new high technology, automated cross-ventilated barn featuring the latest dairy technology. Calves are fed on automatic calf feeders. Cows are milked with Lely A5 milking robots. Cows and heifers are fed with an automatic feeding system that weighs, mixes, and delivers the correct diet to the correct group of animals. In addition, all manure is removed from the pens with a robotic manure removal system.

The Rolfs also grow corn and hay for their livestock. Tim’s family also has a farrow to finish the swine operation. Registration begins at 9:30 am with the program from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm, concluding with lunch. There is no charge for the field day.

Minnesota Milk Producers and Leedstone are teaming up to sponsor a bus trip to the field day. The bus will be leaving from Meyer bus garage, 37264 Co Rd 13 in Melrose at 7:00 am and returning to Melrose at 4:00 pm. The cost for bus transportation is $20/person. Contact Jenna at jenna@mnmilk.org with your name or fill out this form to reserve your space.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott signs voting restrictions into law

On Tuesday, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott signed a bill into law placing new restrictions on voting. The signing into law of Senate Bill 1 adds new restrictions to early voting and new identification requirements, which critics say will disproportionately impact voters of color. Abbott said at an event where he signed the bill: “It does make it easier than ever before for anybody to go cast a ballot. It does also, however, make sure it is harder than ever for people to cheat at the ballot box.”

“Reforms are needed to the election laws of this state to ensure that fraud does not undermine the public confidence in the electoral process,” the text of Texas’ SB 1 states. The law also creates new rules and penalties for assisting others who fill out a registration form or ballot, which could makes it harder for people with disabilities or language barriers to vote. It also requires large Texas counties that lean Democratic to live stream video at ballot-counting sites.

Texas is one of several Republican-leaning states that have pushed for new voting restrictions after former President Donald Trump’s allegations of voter fraud in the 2020 election. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed restrictive voting bill into law in May, and Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp enacted sweeping changes to the state’s election rules in March. The new restrictions have prompted national attention and lawsuits in all three states.

President Biden to outline plan this week to curb the COVID-19 Delta variant, as cases surge

President Biden is expected this week to outline a new “6-pronged” strategy involving the public and private sectors in order to fight against the COVID-19 pandemic and the surge of the delta variant. Biden is set to deliver remarks on Thursday in hopes of controlling the resurgent pandemic, with positive cases and deaths increasing, while vaccination rates remain an issue.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki said: “The president will speak to the American people about his robust plan to stop the spread of the delta variant and boost vaccinations. As (Biden) has said since Day 1, his administration will pull every lever to get the pandemic under control.” Biden will also likely address the issue of mask requirements in schools, with public health experts in agreement that school children, teachers and staff should all be ordered to wear masks to help prevent the additional spread of the virus. Psaki said Tuesday: “I will note that we’ve seen that there is a range of ways that we have increased vaccinations across the country, or vaccinations have increased. One of them is private sector companies mandating in different capacities that their employees get vaccinated. Or certain school districts mandate.”

Positive COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations and deaths are climbing nearly as high as they’ve been since the pandemic first surged in March 2020. Additionally, the full recovery of the economy is dependent on getting children safely back to school, adults back to work, and assisting retail businesses and restaurants.

Lionsgate has officially announced “The Expendable 4” is in the works, reuniting Sylvester Stallone, Couture, Jason Statham, and Dolph Lundgren for an all-new feature film. In addition, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, Megan Fox, and Tony Jaa will join the franchise in new roles for the sequel.

“We are thrilled to partner with our friends at Millennium Media for the next installment of The Expendables franchise,” said Jason Constantine, President of Acquisitions and Co-Productions for the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group. “It’s so much fun to bring these stars together for a no-holds-barred action film. The new film will raise the stakes and be the biggest, most badass adventure yet.”

In an Instagram post earlier this month, Stallone referred to the project as a “spinoff” with the temporary working title of ‘Christmas Story.’  Lionsgate hasn’t yet announced a release date for ‘The Expendables 4’ (aka Christmas Story) but filming is set to begin this fall.
