Mother killed in same spot as her 14-year-old son was slain 2 days earlier in Chicago

On Thursday, Chicago police confirmed they were investigating the shooting death of a 31-year-old woman who was slain at the same spot as her 14-year-old son was murdered just days earlier.

The mother, Delisa Tucker, was shot in the chest Wednesday morning near Chicago’s Wentworth Avenue while visiting the location where her 14-year-old son, Kevin Tinker Jr., was slain. Tucker leaves behind five children between the ages of four and 15. Tucker intended to light a candle at the site of her son’s slaying in the early morning hours before being struck by gunfire herself, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

Chief of Detectives Brendan Deenihan wouldn’t say if they believe the shootings are connected, and indicated no one has been taken into custody as of press time. The 14-year-old victim’s father, Kevin Tinker Sr., described his son as a “good kid” who played basketball and stayed home most of the time with his younger brothers and sisters. But he said that “some violence found him” when he was walking home from a friend’s house.

Police said no witnesses to Delisa Tucker’s slaying had yet been found. Both shootings occurred in the Roseland area of Chicago where police say murders have increased by 48% from last year and 94% from 2019. The area has seen 26 shooting deaths so far in 2021.

CROOKSTON PUBLIC SCHOOLS NEW TRACK & ATHLETIC COMPLEX UPDATE

crookston-public-schools-109

Earlier this school year, the Crookston School Board passed a referendum for a new Track & Athletic Complex for the Crookston High School. The decision to pursue a new Track & Athletic Complex came for a couple of reasons, one being that the School District could not come to an agreement with UMC on purchasing their field, as there was not a desire to make a deal at that time.

Crookston Public Schools Superintendent Jeremy Olson says the School District needs to own the complex to tap into funds they otherwise wouldn’t be able to use, which is part of the reason why they are pursuing building the new one. “We have to own the complex so we can tap into our Long Term Facility Maintenance (LTFM) dollars, which are meant to maintain buildings and facilities,” said Olson. “This would allow us down the road to use these dollars on the complex if something needs to be repaired or fixed because we will own it. So that was a big thing for us as a District.”

The date the School Board agreed on for the referendum is August 9, 2022. If the referendum is passed by the public, plans will move forward to start bidding the project out to contractors. The project’s estimated cost is $3.8 million, which could change as building costs increase/decrease. A portion of the project will be covered locally while some state funding will be included. It is uncertain at this time what the amounts will be.

After long discussions with a committee of public members, Olson said they were able to configure what they wanted the new complex to look like. “At the end of the conversations, we decided to go with a multi-use turf field because we will be able to get the most use out of that option with where we’re located,” said Olson. “We can have track and field, Softball, Soccer practices on a turf field, and we can get multiple uses out of it. We also decided on an 8-lane track rather than a 6-lane track because that gives us more flexibility with hosting tournaments, and we won’t have to deal with limitations we otherwise might have.”

The School District would also build a restroom facility for the new complex if the referendum is passed by using its CTE class as a way for those students to have a hand in building the project and showing their Pirate Pride. The School Board voted on having the referendum after agreeing there is a need for a new complex.

While it is uncertain right now how School District taxpayers will be affected if the referendum is passed, information will continue to be shared with the public as the School District receives it, and all the information will be before the public before the vote on August 9. “What the process is going to look like is that there will be an informational campaign,” said Olson. “It is our responsibility to inform the taxpayers and make sure they have accurate information. That information will actually start to come out in December. From there will have some public meetings where questions can be asked, and then in August will have the vote. If the vote is passed, we will award a bid to a contractor, and then we can start building the complex. It’s a long process, but we’re going to make sure we do this right and that people have accurate information.”

For the entire conversation with Superintendent Olson, you can tune in to KROX Saturday morning for the Focus on Education program at 8:15 a.m. before the Fertile-Beltrami State Football game. Olson also discussed a potential upcoming project for the School District that would be federally funded and reconfigure the High School into a High School and Middle School. The project would also build a preschool edition. You can listen on 105.7 FM, 1260 AM, or by clicking “Listen Live” at the top of this page.

President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden share Thanksgiving message honoring those lost during pandemic

shutterstock_1936930465

President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden sent appreciation to service members who lost their lives during the pandemic in a Thanksgiving video message posted on Twitter.  Biden said: “As we give thanks for what we have, we also keep in our hearts those who we lost, and those who have lost so much. And those who have an empty seat at their kitchen table or their dining room table this year because of this virus or another cruel twist of fate or accident. We pray for them.”

First Lady Jill Biden added: “After being apart last year, we have a new appreciation for those little moments we can’t plan or replicate. The music of laughter in a warm, full kitchen, the thump of small feet making big sounds, the circle of faces crowded around our dining room table, glowing in the candlelight.”

The Bidens spent Thanksgiving in Nantucket. After the video was released, the president called into NBC’s broadcast of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and gave a message to Americans. Said Biden: “My message is after two years, we’re back, America’s back.”

Kevin Spacey to pay $31M for breaching ‘House of Cards’ contract

shutterstock_155476934

Kevin Spacey has been ordered to pay nearly $31 million to TV studio Media Rights Capital (“MRC”) for breaching his contract with the TV series ‘House of Cards’, due to behavior leading up to his 2017 termination from the Netflix show amid allegations of sexual misconduct.

MRC filed a petition in Los Angeles County Superior Court revealing the actor was ordered to pay the eight-figure sum after a “confidential,” closed-door arbitration proceeding that ended with the judgment that Spacey failed to overturn on appeal. The new filing is asking the court to confirm the award.  MRC says the secret proceeding included more than 20 depositions and an eight-day evidentiary hearing in front of a neutral arbitrator. The arbitrator found that Spacey “repeatedly breached” his contractual obligations in each of the five House of Cards seasons that he starred in and executive-produced, according to the paperwork. The arbitrator found MRC “had no choice” but to halt production of the show’s sixth season, remove Spacey’s character from the script and shorten the season from 13 to eight episodes “upon the revelations of Spacey’s pattern of harassment.”

The 62-year-old Spacey was filming the sixth and final season of the show in Oct. 2017, when accusations arose that Spacey attempted to have sex with actor Anthony Rapp at a party at his house in 1986 when Rapp was only 14 years old. Days later, allegations from eight anonymous House of Cards crew members were released, accusing Spacey of “predatory” behavior. Spacey said he didn’t recall the alleged incident with Rapp, but if it did occur, it was “deeply inappropriate drunken behavior.” He later said he was seeking treatment and has largely withdrawn from public life.
