Cecilia Plante, age 90, of Crookston, MN, passed away early Friday morning, December 10, 2021, in RiverView Health, Crookston, with her family at her side.

Cecilia Regina Merschman was born on February 22, 1931, to the union of Frank and Regina (Illies) Merschman of Bagley, Minnesota. She attended elementary and high school at Bagley graduating with the Class of 1949. Cecilia earned a teaching certificate after attending Normal Training in East Grand Forks 1949-1950. She then taught in a rural school near Gentilly, Minnesota. While there, she met her future husband, Dennis Plante. They were united in marriage on August 1, 1951, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Bagley, Minnesota. The newlyweds moved to their farm home near Crookston, Minnesota that same year. Cecilia taught for another year and a half in rural schools after their marriage before leaving in 1953 to join Dennis in Augusta, Georgia where he was stationed after being drafted into the US Army in November of 1952. Cecilia did substitute teaching at John Millidge School in Augusta. In 1953 Dennis was sent to Korea so Cecilia returned to Bagley expecting their first child. After the loss of their infant daughter, Belinda, she enrolled at Bemidji State College, graduating with an Associate degree in 1955. She then taught in the Minnesota communities of Ceylon, Bagley, Euclid, and Crookston. Cecilia served as Director of the Polk County Day Activities Center for five years from 1965-1970 before returning to teaching for District 593, Crookston. Throughout her career, Cecilia continued taking college classes and in 1972 graduated from Moorhead State College with a Bachelor’s in Education. Her very proud husband, their seven children, and her mother were all in attendance for her graduation ceremony. Cecilia retired in the spring of 1993 after a long and rewarding 43-year career in education. She would later be called back to teach keyboarding to 6th graders while also volunteering with Chore Service for the Polk County Correction Center, Villa St. Vincent, Mount St. Benedict, RSVP, the Reader’s Theater, and Senior Surfer, while also serving as Secretary of the Agassiz Federal Credit Union Board.

In 2004 Cecilia and her friend, Gladys Boucher, started a group of like-minded women known as the Red Hat Group, going out for lunch once a month. They remained active until Covid-19 put an end to everything. Cecilia enjoyed attending international dinners at the University of Minnesota-Crookston. She joined the “friendship program” at the college which led to her befriending a student, Sam Sele, from Liberia, Africa, and the two remained in contact over the years.

Cecilia liked to travel and enjoyed studying and learning the different cultures while visiting Ireland, Quebec, the Canadian Rockies, Alaska, Hawaii, Rome, Medjugorje in Bosnia-Herzegovina, and most of the United States. She also enjoyed local excursions to the Mahnomen Casino with her friends which also came to an end with Covid. Each of her travels always included finding a local church to attend Mass. Cecilia still enjoyed playing many games with friends and family. She wrote her memoirs for her children which included a 74 page plus picture book. “I have continued to put my life into writings for family members to learn about the years of my life. Too often, we do not pass this information on. I hope you pass information of your life on to your children.”

Cecilia was a very faithful, God-loving woman. “Faith, family, and friends help you get through it – but keeping active by volunteering helps keep you healthy. You don’t have time to dwell on what could have been.”

Cecilia’s many accomplishments and memberships in church, civic organizations and offices held include Treasurer of the Crookston Education Association, Minnesota Education Association, membership in the National Education Association, Secretary and Youth Advisor of The ARC, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, Villa St. Vincent Auxiliary, St. Peter’s Catholic Church – Council Chairman and Lecturer, President of the St. Anne’s Sodality, Catholic Daughter’s Court Bishop Schenk #2010 Regent and Vice-Regent, the Retired Senior Volunteer Program Advisory Committee, Secretary of the Agassiz Federal Credit Union Board, the Merri Mixers Homemakers President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer, the West Polk Homemakers Council President and Vice President, Chairperson of the Norma Bigger Scholarship committee, was the C & G Rockettes Queen Mother, the UMC Friendship Program, Golden Link, REAM—-Retired Education Association of Minnesota, and was recipient of the Homemaker’s Exceptional Service Award in 1998, and honored as Crookston’s Experienced American in August, 2006.

Search continues for victims of tornadoes that ‘likely killed over 100 people’

shutterstock_1703027110

Rescuers resumed search operations on Sunday for victims of a deadly tornado outbreak with dozens confirmed dead, and destroyed entire communities throughout six states on Friday.  Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear said the tornado that tore a 200-mile gash across his state and leveled homes and businesses.  Beshear told “Face the Nation” on Sunday that left the tornadoes left “devastation like none of us have ever seen before. This tornado didn’t discriminate against anybody in its path, even if they were trying to be safe.”  Mayfield, Kentucky, one of the hardest hit communities, showed mass destruction in satellite photos. The official number of confirmed deaths from the tornadoes and severe storms stood at 25 on Sunday morning, with Kentucky suffering the most deaths. But Beshear estimated the actual death toll in his state would exceed 80 and could rise to more than 100 as crews continue sifting through the wreckage.

In Arkansas, two people were killed, including one person in a nursing home. Governor Asa Hutchinson said Sunday that it was a “miracle” that more weren’t killed at the care facility, telling “Face the Nation” — “The staff did an incredible job of using their own body to shield some of the residents, and the fact that there was a warning system in place helped them to move them into the hallway that saved lives, and really emphasize the importance of the early warning system, the sirens and taking action whenever you hear that.”. In Illinois, six people were killed when the roof of an Amazon warehouse in Edwardsville collapsed during a storm.  Forty-five people have been rescued, though it was unclear how many remain missing.

President Biden signed an emergency declaration for Kentucky, saying: “Whatever is needed, the federal government is going to find a way to supply it.”  The National Weather Service said the historic tornado that was on the ground for well over 100 miles has been classified as an E3, although it could be reassessed as they study the effects on the ground.

Chris Wallace leaves FOX News after 18 years to join CNN+

shutterstock_1835394679

Veteran broadcast journalist Chris Wallace announced his departure from FOX News on the air Sunday morning. CNN later confirmed Wallace will next host a weekday show for its streaming platform CNN+, which is set to debut in 2022.

Wallace, the 74-year-old son of late 60 Minutes icon Mike Wallace, said: “After 18 years — this is my final FOX News Sunday. It is the last time — and I say this with real sadness — we will meet like this. Eighteen years ago, the bosses here at FOX promised me they would never interfere with a guest I booked or a question I asked. And they kept that promise. I have been free to report to the best of my ability, to cover the stories I think are important, to hold our country’s leaders to account. It’s been a great ride.  The fact you’ve chosen to spend this hour with us is something I cherish. But after 18 years, I have decided to leave FOX. I want to try something new, to go beyond politics to all the things I’m interested in. I’m ready for a new adventure. And I hope you’ll check it out.”

FOX News Media said Wallace’s show will continue and will be hosted by rotating news anchors until a permanent anchor is announced, adding in a statement:  “We are extremely proud of our journalism and the stellar team that Chris Wallace was a part of for 18 years. The legacy of FOX News Sunday will continue with our star journalists, many of whom will rotate in the position until a permanent host is named.”

Wallace covered five presidential elections and interviewed every president since George H.W. Bush, as well as world leaders such as France’s Emanuel Macron and Russia’s Vladimir Putin. Wallace previously worked for ABC from 1989-2003 and NBC from 1975-88, including serving as NBC’s White House correspondent in the 1980s and moderator of Meet the Press from 1987-88.

Director Steven Spielberg’s musical “West Side Story” grossed $10.5 million in North American theaters this weekend, a disappointing opening, but enough to claim the top spot at the box office. Rounding out the top 10 domestic releases, as estimated by Comscore, were “Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City” ($1.6 million), “Clifford the Big Red Dog” ($1.3 million), “Christmas with The Chosen: The Messengers” ($1.29 million), “Dune” ($857,000) and “Venom: Let There be Carnage” ($850,000).

Spielberg’s adaptation of West Side Story stars Ansel Elgort and Rachel Zegler as Tony and Maria, two teenagers living in a culturally divided New York City in 1957.

TRINITY LUTHERAN CHURCH HOSTING BLOOD DRIVE DEC. 22 IN MEMORY OF CHERYL STEINBRINK

trinity-lutheran-church-logo-11

Trinity Lutheran Church in Crookston will be hosting a blood drive conducted by Vitalant on Wednesday, December 22, from 11:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. in memory of Cheryl Steinbrink.

Cheryl’s daughter Jenn Walz who works at the Crookston Eye Clinic, shared some background information on the blood drive and why one is held each year in honor of her mother. “This is the 9th Annual Blood Drive we’ve now had in memory of my Mom Cheryl after she passed away in 2012,” said Walz. “Without the blood donations we received while she was in the hospital, we wouldn’t have had as much time with her. So, it’s really something that has become near and dear to my family and me.”

The goal of the Blood Drive is to try and help as many people in need as possible. The Blood Drive has been held at Trinity Lutheran Church in the past years because of Cheryl’s involvement with Trinity Lutheran and how important the church was in her life. Cheryl served on a few boards with Trinity Lutheran church before her passing.

The Blood Drive is usually held in December, and Walz explained why. “We usually try to do it in December because while they always need blood, it seems like, around the holidays, there is more of a need,” said Walz. “It’s just been a great time for us to do it because the urgency and need for blood is higher.”

Walz says those on the fence about donating or even scared should reconsider donating to the great cause. “It’s a great cause. I was always scared to do it, so I never started donating until we started this blood dive because I was afraid of needles,” said Walz. “The workers for the blood drive are amazing, and you don’t have to watch the needle go in if you don’t want to. It’s not that painful, and it’s something small that can end up making a big difference.”

Pre-registration is required to donate blood. When we spoke with Walz, spaces were still open and available for signing up. If you’re interested in signing up to donate, you can contact Walz at 218-368-6920 or go online at Donors.Vitalant.org and enter the Blood Drive code: Crookston. Facemasks will be required while you give blood.

If you have eligibility questions, you can call 1-800-289-4923.
