LETTER TO THE EDITOR: HOLIDAY GIFT IDEAS FOR FAMILIES

villa-benedictine-community-7

The Benedictine Living Community in Crookston is offering a few gift suggestions for family members this Christmas season. Their letter with ideas can be found below –

When asked about what they want for a Christmas gift, most aging adults will respond with, “don’t get me anything. I don’t need more things.”

So what do you give someone who has moved into a senior living community? The first recommendation is to ask them or their caregivers about what they truly need, but if you don’t have time, we have some suggestions for you.

Gift of Time

The most important gift that most seniors will ask for is some of your time. In-person and virtual visits are treasured. Not sure what to say or do when in person? We have some suggestions for you.

  • Bring along some family photos to reminisce about past family holidays.
  • Bring a simple game that they used to enjoy playing.
  • If there is a younger child coming to the visit, have them bring something to show and tell.
  • Listen to their favorite music together and if it creates an impromptu sing-along – go with it. Soft music is an ideal activity to share even when your loved one isn’t well or reached an advanced stage of illness.
  • Share a good book or the newspaper. Reading out loud is a good activity for someone who is bedridden. Not confident in your reading abilities? Then audio books are a great choice. Many public libraries offer free access to audiobooks.
  • Do a craft together to decorate the resident’s room for an upcoming holiday. Keep in mind that live Christmas trees of any size are not allowed in residents’ rooms because they become a fire hazard. Keep things small. Choose items that do not need to be powered with electricity as extension cords are considered another hazard.
  • Pamper your loved one with a manicure, hairstyle session, shave, or grooming. It’s a great way to pass the time and leave your loved one appreciated and looking their best. For a virtual visit, schedule it so they can be included in a family event and feel like part of the family. This is great for families who eat Thanksgiving later in the day as most senior communities stick to their dining schedule.

Still looking to give something?

Slippers or Socks

Consider warming up cold feet with some fleece or fuzzy slippers with rubber grippers on the bottom. Socks with grippers are another choice to keep feet warm while helping to reduce the potential for falls and injuries.

Greeting Cards

Many seniors still enjoy writing and receiving letters, so gifts of stationery, an assorted box of greeting cards, pens, and stamps are great gifts. And when you receive one of these lovely cards, it is a great gift to mail a letter back!

Bath or Grooming Basket

Does your loved one have a favorite scent? Why not assemble a small basket filled with their favorite scented shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and lotion. Dry skin is often a problem for older adults, so check out what might work best for their skin type.

Walker Caddy

Residents who use a walker to get around may appreciate a walker basket so they can easily carry items with them. You can purchase these at major retail outlets or even sew your own fabric caddy. There are lots of ideas online.

Movies

Does your loved one have a favorite movie? Send a DVD of their favorite movie that they can watch in their room or can be shared by the Community.

Books or Magazines

Large print books and magazines are favorites for those who can still enjoy reading as are pen-and-paper Sudoku, crossword puzzles, or word searches.

Games or Activities

Games with large print and large pieces are great to pass the time. Large-piece jigsaw puzzles are also a great hit with seniors.

Still not sure?

A recent poll of seniors shows that what they want most is to stay connected with friends and families. Next on the list are gifts that are practical and functional, and sometimes sentimental. Take these measures into consideration and your gift will be appreciated.

Actor Jussie Smollett found guilty on five counts of faking hate crime, lying to police

shutterstock_642263074

Jussie Smollett was found guilty of five counts of disorderly conduct on Thursday, stemming from a January 2019 incident in which the actor alleged he had been attacked because of his race and sexual orientation. A Chicago jury reached guilty verdicts on five of six charges against Smollett. The decision came after nearly 10 hours of deliberation spread across two days from a panel of six men and six women. The charges, class four felonies, could result in up to three years of prison time. Given Smollett’s lack of a criminal history, it is unclear if he will be sentenced to any time in prison.

During the trial, Smollett testified that he had been attacked by two masked men while walking home around 2 a.m. The actor said the men beat him, shouted racist and homophobic comments, poured a chemical substance on him, looped a rope around his neck and then fled. Two brothers, Ola and Abel Osundairo, were arrested in February 2019 for allegedly being connected to the attack. The Osundairos told police that Smollett wrote them a check for $3,500 to carry out the purported attack. Smollett contested that the $3,500 check was given to the brothers for meal and workout plans. His attorneys alleged that the brothers made up the story about the attack being staged and said they would not testify against Smollett if they were paid $1 million each.

Jussie Smollett’s attorney, Nenye Uche, said he “respectfully disagrees” with the jury’s verdict, adding that he feels “100% confident” that Smollett’s case will be won on appeal.”  Uche said:  “He [Smollett] is 100% confident that this will be reversed on appeal. At the end of the day, we believe justice will prevail. We don’t believe it was done today but we’re very confident that he will be cleared and he will be found to be innocent.”

Former reality star Josh Duggar found guilty on child pornography charges; faces up to 20 years in prison

shutterstock_659041903

A federal jury in Arkansas on Thursday convicted former reality TV star Josh Duggar of downloading and possessing child pornography. The jury in Fayetteville found the 33-year-old Duggar guilty on one count each of receiving and possessing child pornography. He faces up to 20 years in prison and fines of up to $250,000 for each count when he’s sentenced at a later date.

Duggar and his family starred on TLC’s “19 Kids and Counting” until the network canceled the show in 2015, following revelations that he had molested four of his sisters and a babysitter. Authorities began investigating the abuse in 2006 after receiving a tip from a family friend but concluded that the statute of limitations on any possible charges had expired. At that time, Duggar’s parents said he had confessed and apologized; and Josh Duggar himself later apologized for a pornography addiction and for cheating on his wife.

Federal authorities said they began investigating Duggar on the child pornography charges after a Little Rock police detective found child porn files were being shared by a computer traced to Duggar. A federal agent testified in May that images depicting the sexual abuse of children, including toddlers, were downloaded in 2019 onto a computer at a car dealership Duggar owned. Duggar’s attorney argued that someone else downloaded or uploaded the images onto Duggar’s computer.
