CROOKSTON FIRE DEPARTMENT HOLIDAY SAFETY TIPS

christmas-tree-safety

With the Holiday season beginning, the Crookston Fire Department is reminding the public of a few safety tips to ensure you stay safe this Holiday season.

Christmas Tree fires are uncommon; however, they are more likely to be serious when they do occur. Crookston Firefighter Brian Hanson provided a few tips to be safe this Holiday season. “When choosing a Christmas tree, we want you to choose a tree that has fresh green needles on the end of it,” said Hanson. “This will help with the tree initially with making sure the tree isn’t too dry, to begin with. When you place the tree in the stand, we ask you to cut two inches off it. This will keep the tree alive because the water will be able to get up from the tree’s base much easier. Another important thing to remember is to keep the tree at least 3-5 feet away from any heat source such as lights, fireplaces, candles, and heat vents.”

Other important things to keep in mind are making sure the tree isn’t blocking any exits so you can easily find a way out of your home in the event of an emergency. Watering your tree frequently is also critical to ensure the tree doesn’t die and pose a fire hazard. Hanson suggests checking the tree once in the morning and at night to see if more water should be added. One last reminder with Christmas tree safety is making sure you use lights that are meant to be hung on Christmas trees.

The second Holiday safety tip Hanson provided has to do with holiday decorating. “We’re going to ask people to choose decorations that are flame resistant, if possible,” said Hanson. If you’re going to use candles, we ask that they’re kept away from decorations and things that can burn. Knowing what lights can be used indoors and outdoors is also something to be aware of. There should be a tag on every set of lights that shows whether they can be used inside or outside.”

Other precautions that can be taken to avoid fires from inside your home this year include keeping matches away from children by keeping them locked or in high cabinets and keeping your pets away from any lit candles throughout the house.

The Pirates will have five duals today opening up full blast with Grafton, Central Cass and LaMoure, N.D. before a 10-15 minute break and then ending up with two Minnesota teams, Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton and New York Mills!!

CROOKSTON VS GRAFTON –
Crookston had a great start to the season with a 48-18 victory over the Grafton Spoilers.  Evin Trudeau got things going for the Pirates with a pin in the second period to give Crookston a 6-0 lead.  Neither team had a wrestler at 113 pounds, so the next match was at 120 pounds with Gavyn Hlucney, an eighth-grader earning his first varsity victory with a pin in the second period to give the pirates a 12-0 lead.  Another Pirate was wrestling his first varsity match at 126 pounds with Lucas Perala, an eighth-grader, battling early before falling by a pin and Grafton was within a 12-6 deficit.  The Spoilers won the next match by a forfeit to tie the match.  Grafton won the 138-pound match by a pin to take an 18-12 lead.  The lead didn’t last long as the Pirate’s Casey Weiland, an eighth-grader, won by a pin in 23 seconds to tie the match at 18.  Crookston took the lead for good at 152-pounds when Carter Coauette wrestled a solid match and picked up a hard-fought 4-2 win by decision for a 21-18 lead.  Ethan Bowman picked up a win by forfeit before Spencer Ness wrestled well in a 7-1 decision victory for a 30-18 lead.  Crookston had three forfeit victories at 182, 195, and 220 for a 48-18 lead and neither team had a heavyweight wrestler and Crookston opened the season with a 48-18 victory.

PIRATE DANCE TEAM PLACES FOR FIRST TIME IN 21 YEARS AT SEASON-OPENING COMPETITION AT DGF

pirate-dance-team-2021

The Crookston Pirate Varsity Dance team competed in Glyndon at Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton High School on Friday night and finished third place.  It was the first time in 21 years that the Pirate Dance team has placed in a competition.

Pirate Dance Coach Grace Espinosa said she was proud of the girls for how they handled some adversity during the week and then finished with an awesome performance on Friday.  “The week leading up to this competition was anything but ideal. The girls had to change their entire routine learning whole new choreography and formations with just three practices left,” said Espinosa. “The nerves were at an all-time high for me at this competition. They all went above and beyond and nailed the routine. I’m so proud of them. The most exciting part about it is this was only the first competition. This season will have amazing things in store for this team!”

Members of the team are Morgyn Larson, Calleigh Fanfulik, Adalyn Hanson, Amelia Cordova, Evelyn Gunderson, Avery Mathews, Mackenzie Funk, Brea Lessard, Kendra Brekken, Leila Bautista, Avery Trudeau.  The managers are Kayla Brekken and Emily Shea.
