SUPPLEMENTAL DRIVERS EDUCATION COURSE BEING OFFERED AT HIGHLAND ON THURSDAY DEC. 30

drivers-ed_blog-3

Highland Elementary School Principal Chris Trostad will be offering a supplemental driver education meeting on Thursday, December 30, for parents and their children at 6:00 p.m. inside of Highland. Trostad tries to perform one once a year but put this one together last minute due to Covid and the mask requirement at Highland.

With the mask requirement now lifted, Trostad wanted to get a group together to help parents and their children understand the importance and dangers of driving. Trostad talked about what the meeting entails. “For driver education, the state of Minnesota offers a supplemental driver education meeting for children and their parents,” said Trostad. “We invite the city police officers, county engineer, state troopers, and they’re able to share lots of great information about dangerous places where accidents happen in Crookston and within the county. We invite as many people as we can, and lots of great information gets shared.”

The class is free to attend with no pre-registration required. Trostad discussed the advantage of attending the meeting for both the parents and the students. “Any parents that want to attend. needs to attend with their child, and then you will receive a certificate that reduces the hours the student will need to log behind the wheel by ten,” said Trostad. “You typically have to log fifty hours of driving with fifteen of those coming at night, but this class will reduce that to forty hours and only ten at night. The biggest benefit, though, is that studies have found parents that sit through the class with their children have significantly fewer accidents than ones who do not.”

The meeting is open to anyone who has already gone through drivers education within the past year, currently going through it, or for students taking the driver’s education course this upcoming spring or summer. Trostad is hopeful parents will show up and commit some time to sit through the class with their child. “Hopefully, parents will show up, there is no registration required, and you’ll get your certificate at the end but more importantly gain valuable information that will help your child be safe on the roads,” said Trostad.

The meeting will be on Thursday, December 30, at 6:00 p.m. at Highland Elementary School and will last approximately one hour.

Royal Caribbean ship with 55 passengers positive with Covid-19 onboard will remain at sea until this weekend

A cruise ship out of South Florida will skip two ports after 55 people onboard tested positive for COVID-19. Royal Caribbean International confirmed Thursday that its ‘Odyssey of the Seas’ ship will not stop in Curaçao or Aruba as planned. The ship left Port Everglades on Saturday for an 8-night Caribbean sailing. It plans to remain out at sea until returning to Fort Lauderdale as scheduled on Sunday.  Last Saturday, another Royal Caribbean ship – ‘Symphony of the Seas’ – arrived back in Miami after 48 people tested positive for COVID-19.

Royal Caribbean said in a statement: “The decision was made together with the islands out of an abundance of caution due to the current trend of COVID-19 cases in the destinations’ communities as well as crew and guests testing positive on board — 55 crew members and guests, representing 1.1% of the onboard community. The cruise sailed with 95% of the onboard community fully vaccinated.”

Royal Caribbean says all 55 people who tested positive are fully vaccinated and mildly symptomatic or asymptomatic. The cruise line declined to say how many of those people are passengers and how many are crew.  Their statement read: “We continue to monitor their health. Close contacts were also identified and placed in quarantine to be monitored for 24 hours prior to testing.”

Jury finds Kim Potter guilty of manslaughter in the fatal shooting of Daunte Wright

shutterstock_1954825543

On Thursday, jurors convicted suburban Minneapolis police officer Kim Potter of two manslaughter charges in the killing of Daunte Wright, a black motorist she shot during a traffic stop after she said she confused her gun for her taser.

The mostly white jury deliberated for about four days before finding former officer Potter guilty of first-degree and second-degree manslaughter. The 49-year-old Potter faces about seven years in prison on the most serious count under the state’s sentencing guidelines, however, prosecutors said they would be seeking a longer term.

Potter shot and killed the 20-year-old Wright during an April 11 traffic stop in Brooklyn Center as she and other officers were trying to arrest him on an outstanding warrant for a weapons possession charge. The shooting happened at a time of high tension in the area, with former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin standing trial just miles away for the killing of George Floyd.

Jurors were shown video of the shooting that was captured by police body cameras and dashcams. In sometimes tearful testimony, Potter told jurors that she was “sorry it happened.” She said that she shouted her warning about the Taser after she saw a look of fear on the face of Sgt. Mychal Johnson, who was leaning into the passenger-side door of Wright’s car. She also told jurors that she doesn’t remember what she said or everything that happened after the shooting, as much of her memory of those moments “is missing.” Potter’s lawyers argued that she made a mistake by drawing her gun instead of her taser.

Under Minnesota law, defendants are sentenced only on the most serious conviction if multiple counts involve the same act and the same victim.  The maximum sentence for first-degree manslaughter is 15 years. A sentencing date was set for Friday, February 18 at 10 a.m. ET.

Tapings of Wendy Williams’ and Nick Cannon’s talk shows are canceled due to COVID-19 surge

shutterstock_1549228697

Tapings of episodes of The Wendy Williams Show and Nick Cannon have been canceled because of the rise in cases of COVID-19 in New York City. Williams has been off the show since September as she focuses on her health issues — the talk show host has Graves disease. Guest hosts have been filling in for her while she is away.

The talk show’s Instagram account posted: “Due to the growing number of new COVID-19 cases and to ensure a safe return for our crew members and staff, “The Wendy Williams Show” will now return with new live episodes on Monday, January 10, rather than Monday, January 3, as previously scheduled. @MichaelRapaport, @KymWhitley & @FinesseMitchell and @sherrieshepherd will guest host the shows as previously announced. We continue to observe all relevant New York City health and safety protocols, and wish everyone a happy and healthy holiday season.”

Cannon posted on Instagram: “Due to the growing number of new COVID-19 cases and to ensure a safe return for our crew members and staff, “Nick Cannon” will now return with new episodes on Monday, January 10, instead of Monday, January 3, as previously scheduled. We continue to observe all relevant New York City health and safety protocols, and wish everyone a happy and healthy holiday season.”

FOX also announced it has canceled its planned live broadcast of the New Year’s special, Toast & Roast 2022 starring former Community castmates Ken Jeong and Joel McHale.  Six and The Lion King were the latest Broadway shows to cancel performances until after Christmas because of COVID-19. They join a list that includes Dear Evan Hansen, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Ain’t Too Proud and Hadestown.
