Five-alarm fire in Bronx, NYC kills at least 19, including nine children

A devastating five-alarm fire broke out in an apartment building in the Fordham Heights neighborhood of the Bronx in New York City on Sunday, killing at least 19 people, including nine children.  More than 200 firefighters with the Fire Department of New York battled the blaze, which was first reported around 11 a.m. in the 19-floor building.

Officials described as one of the worst fires in decades.  NYC Mayor Eric Adams said during a press conference: “This is a horrific, horrific, painful moment for the city of New York and the impact of this fire is going to really bring a level of just pain and despair in our city. This is going to be one of the worst fires we have witnessed during modern times in the city of New York.”  According to data by the National Fire Protection Association, the 19 deaths makes the blaze the third deadliest apartment fire in the United States.

NYC Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro confirmed that the fire may have been sparked by a faulty electric space heater, stating the blaze began in an apartment spanning the building’s second and third floors.  Said Nigro: “The fire consumed that apartment that is on two floors and part of the hallway. The door to that apartment, unfortunately, when the residents left was left open it did not close by itself. The smoke spread throughout the building, thus the tremendous loss of life and other people fighting for their lives at hospitals throughout the Bronx.”

Fire officials said 63 people were deemed to have suffered injuries so far, with at least 32 of them taken to area hospitals. Officials have not released the names of any of the victims. In a press conference Sunday evening, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said the state would establish a victim’s compensation fund for those impacted by the fire.  Said Hochul: “We are indeed a city in shock. It’s impossible to go into that room, where scores of families, who are in such grief, who are in pain, to see in a mother’s eyes as I held her, who lost her entire family … it’s hard to fathom what they are going through.”

27 people rescued from floating ice chunk in Green Bay, Wisconsin

shutterstock_169103627

Authorities confirmed that least 27 people were rescued from a large chunk of floating ice in Green Bay, Wisc.  The Brown County Sheriff’s Office said in a post on Facebook that deputies worked with firefighters, Department of Natural Resources officials and the Coast Guard to safely remove the people from the ice off the shore of Point Comfort in Green Bay on Saturday.  Luckily, no one was injured in the incident.

In a statement, the Sheriff’s office said: “The Brown County Sheriff’s Office airboat and the U.S. Coast Guard’s airboat out of Sturgeon Bay were great assets during this rescue. Their ability to carry up to eight additional passengers aside from rescue personnel and ability to traverse ice and water terrain greatly cut down on the amount of time and risk this rescue took.”

The sheriff’s office received reports of broken ice around 10:17 a.m. as the ice floated about three-quarters of a mile during the rescue, settling about a mile away from the shoreline once the operation was completed. While the ice remained in “fairly stable condition”, it was “deteriorating rapidly” and cracking as water crashed against the edges.  According to authorities: “Barge traffic yesterday appears to have weakened the ice along the east shore of the Bay, therefore, the ice should be avoided for all recreational use.”

Keanu Reeves to star in ‘The Devil in the White City’ series for Hulu

shutterstock_728975182

Keanu Reeves is set to star in an episodic adaptation of Erik Larson’s best-selling crime story, The Devil in the White City, marking his first major TV role.  The Devil in the White City tells the true story of Daniel H. Burnham, the architect behind the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, and Dr. H. H. Holmes, the serial killer who used the fair to lure his victims.

Leonardo DiCaprio, who acquired the rights to the book in 2010, will produce the project for Hulu with his longtime collaborator Martin Scorsese.  When DiCaprio first acquired the rights to the book, it was thought he would star in a feature-length film directed by Scorsese. However, in 2019 DiCaprio and Scorsese struck a deal with Hulu to reimagine the project as a limited series. At the time, the deal was said to be one of the expensive acquisitions in Hulu’s history.

Todd Field (Little Children, In the Bedroom) will direct the first two episodes of the series. Field and Sam Shaw (Castle Rock) are also on board as producers of the project.

NEW CVB TOURISM COORDINATOR CATHY LAJESSE EAGER TO BRING MORE PEOPLE INTO CROOKSTON

cathy-lejesse-336x420-1-2

The Crookston Visitors Bureaus (CVB) search for a Tourism Coordinator is over, as they have hired Cathy LaJesse to fill the role. LaJesse is originally from the Crookston area and moved back to Crookston 13 years ago.

LaJesse’s main roles will be to help enhance current events that the CVB helps put on and bring new ideas for possible events in the future. LaJesse said the thing that excited her the most about the job was the opportunity to get more people into Crookston. “That was definitely one of the biggest things that excited me about this chance,” said LaJesse. “I want to give people the same opportunity that I have, which is to see all the fun things that the City of Crookston has to offer.”

LaJesse will attend her first CVB meeting this upcoming Thursday, January 13. While she has already begun to work, she feels this meeting will be an excellent opportunity to start digging in deeper. “So, for the meeting, I am going to be digging in, and we’re going to start talking about how we can enhance some of the current events that are upcoming,” said LaJesse. “With the meeting, I’m also planning on bringing some new ideas to the table and some things that we could look towards doing down the road.”

LaJesse also talked about the first big event that she will be involved in. “One of the bigger events we have coming up is Ice Buster Daze,” said LaJesse. “That is February 11-12, and that will be the first big event that I’ll be able to participate in. With this event being so close, there is only so much that can be done for this year, but I will be looking at different ways to enhance that event and bring people in. It is a two-day event this year, so we should get some overnight stays, and this model that has been used for this event is going to be what we try to do moving forward.”

LaJesse will be working closely with the CVB Board, sharing her ideas and new ways to enhance events. LaJesse will also work closely with the Crookston Blue Line Club to try and generate overnight stays and use out of the Crookston Sports Center.

Debra “Debbie” Jean Paulson – Obit

debra-paulson

Debra “Debbie” Jean Paulson, 66, a Crookston, MN native and lifelong resident, passed away at RiverView Health early Thursday evening with some family by her side, January 6, 2022, after a brief illness.

Debbie was born on July 13, 1955 to Donald and Delores (Eck) Strommen. She was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church and raised with her 4 brothers in a busy household. Debbie attended Crookston schools and in 1973 graduated from Central High School. After spending a short time in California she enrolled at the University of Minnesota in Crookston, earning an Associate degree in Early Childhood Development. On October 16, 1976 she was united in marriage to Larry Duane Paulson at Trinity and they had been very comfortably settled in their Riverside Avenue home since that time. Debbie later began working at the Crookston’s Eagles Aerie where she was very popular with the Club’s patrons. After 20 plus years at the Eagle’s, Debbie began employment with the Sisters of Saint Benedict in the dietary department of the Monastery, remaining there until her retirement.

Reading was a favorite pastime for Debbie and led her to becoming a frequent volunteer for the Agassiz Public Library. Favorite memories were of yearly Eagle’s bowling trips and occasional visits to the casino to play triple diamonds, her slot machine game of choice. Debbie enjoyed watching cable tv programming, especially Hallmark movies, and solving crossword puzzles. She loved visiting on the telephone, but almost exclusively on her landline, because she wasn’t a big fan of cellphones. You could always find Widman’s chocolates in her purse. Debbie was also a longtime member of the Eagles Auxiliary.

Debbie is survived by Larry, her husband of 45 years; her mother, Delores Strommen of Crookston; and 2 brothers, Danny Strommen and Doug Strommen of Crookston. She also leaves nieces and nephews: Amanda Strommen, Ashley (Aaron) Gagner, Ross (Jim) Strommen, Zach Strommen, Brock Strommen, Aryanna Ostgaard, Cyrina Ostgaard, Gabriella Ostgaard, and Melanie Newcombe; her great-nieces and nephews who brought a twinkle of pride to her eyes: Aadin, Adley, and Ames Gagner and Kendra Strommen; and 2 brothers-in-law, Brad Paulson and Jeff Paulson. She was preceded in death by her father, Donald Strommen; brothers, Dale and Dave Strommen; parents-in-law, Delmer and Eunice Paulson; and sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Natalie and Kent Ostgaard. Debbie’s memory will be forever treasured by all who were a part of her life.

The Memorial Service in remembrance of Debra Jean Paulson will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, January 14, 2022, the Stenshoel-Houske Funeral Home with Celebrant Trey Everett, officiating. Wayne Yeager – Obit

wayne-yeager

Wayne LeRoy Yeager, 62, of Crookston, MN, passed away at his home Thursday evening, January 6, 2022, comforted by his family gathered at his bedside.

Wayne was born in Fargo, ND on August 3, 1959, the son of Elton LeRoy and Eva Ingrid Elizabeth Maria (Ottl) Yeager. He grew up in Ada, MN and graduated from Ada High School as a member of the Class of 1972. Wayne farmed on the Yeager family farm near Felton, MN for a year before moving to Crookston to begin employment with Dahlgren and Company. On July 26, 1980 he was united in marriage to the love of his life, Linda Mae St. Marie, in a ceremony that took place at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Red Lake Falls, MN. The couple made their home in Crookston where together they raised their 4 children: Nate, Jeremy, Kelsey, and Matthew in a loving home. He was a kind and caring husband and father who worked hard to provide for his family. He worked for Dahlgren and Company as a mill operator for many years. Wayne, known to family and friends alike as “Yogi”, also worked for area farmers including Mike Gasper, Robin Brekken, and Greg LeBlanc.

He was a longtime member of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception parish and became very active in the Cathedral School and School Board. His friendly nature couldn’t help but put smiles on the faces of students and teachers alike. Wayne was in his glory watching his kids play sports and playing with his grandkids. Nearly every hockey fan who has attended a game at the Crookston arena has fantasized about driving the Zamboni….Wayne did it for several years! He was an avid fan of the Minnesota Wild and Vikings, never giving up hope that ‘next year’ would be the year to win it all. He enjoyed farming, and liked looking at tractors, old and new. In the fall Wayne and Linda would travel to Rollag, MN to take in the festivities at the Western Minnesota Steam Threshers Reunion.

Wayne will be long remembered and sadly missed by Linda, his beloved wife of 41 years; their four children and spouses: Nate and Michelle Yeager of Chatham, IL, Jeremy and Jamie Yeager of Barnesville, MN, Kelsey and Max Mason of Asheville, NC, and Matthew and Jordyne Yeager of Urbandale, IA; 5+grandchildren: Noah, Makenna, Aiden, and Kalyn Yeager, Jack Mason, and Baby Boy Yeager, due in March, 2022. He also leaves his mother, Eva Eckert of Eugene, OR; siblings, Char (Bill) Ellingsworth of Junction City, OR and Warren (Becky) Yeager of Greenbush, MN; together with other relatives and friends. Wayne was preceded in death by his father, Elton Yeager; stepfather, Jim Eckert; grandparents, Roy and Lucille Yeager; and parents-in-law, Ray and Odina Mae St. Marie. Blessed be the memory of Wayne LeRoy Yeager.

The Memorial Mass celebrating the life of Wayne Yeager will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, January 15, 2022, in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Crookston, MN, with The Rev. Joe Richards, presiding. Visitation will be at the Cathedral on Friday from 5-7:00 p.m. with a prayer service and sharing of memories at 7:00 p.m. Both services will be livestreamed by going to www.crookstoncathedral.com and clicking on the Funerals prompt to view.
