Chicago schools to shut for 3rd day amid debate with teachers union over COVID-19 protocols

shutterstock_186197789

Leaders of the nation’s third-largest school district canceled classes for a third consecutive day amid negotiations with the Chicago Teachers Union over remote learning and other COVID-19 safety protocols. The teachers union voted this week to revert to online instruction, telling teachers to stay home starting Wednesday during the latest COVID-19 surge — just two days after students returned from winter break.  District officials had to cancel classes each day for students in the roughly 350,000-student district during negotiations, saying there’s no plan to return to districtwide remote instruction.

In a Thursday message to parents, district officials said classes would be canceled Friday but “in-person learning and activities may be available at a small number of schools” based on how many staff show up; a small percentage of teachers have continued to come to schools during what the district has labeled an “illegal work stoppage.” However, the offerings would vary from school to school, and some alerted parents earlier in the day that they wouldn’t have enough staff to have children and preemptively canceled.

Chicago Public Schools, like most other districts, has rejected a districtwide return to remote learning. District officials insist schools can safely remain open with protocols in place, however there was little sign Thursday that either side was softening. Issues on the table including more testing and metrics to trigger school closures.

President Biden speaks out on anniversary of January 6th U.S. capitol attack

shutterstock_1936930471-4

During an address on Thursday to commemorate the anniversary of the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol a year ago, President Joe Biden criticized former President Donald Trump, denouncing him for sowing a “web of lies” about voter fraud and a “stolen” election and undermined democracy in the United States because he couldn’t come to terms with the fact that he’d lost.

Biden gave his remarks at the National Statuary Hall at the Capitol, the building that was overrun by extremist Trump supporters in an effort to disrupt the Electoral College vote confirming Biden’s victory in the 2020 presidential election. In his speech, Biden said:  “I will stand in the breach. I will defend this nation, and I will allow no one to place a dagger at the throat of democracy. [Trump is] not just a former president, he’s a defeated former president.”  Biden accused his predecessor of valuing profit and personal gain over the rule of law and the will of the people.

Biden also noted that Trump did literally nothing to intervene for hours while a radicalized mob broke into the Capitol and looked to harm members of Congress. Said Biden:  “It was an armed insurrection. They were not trying to uphold the will of the people. They were looking to deny the will of the people. They were not looking to uphold a free and fair election, they were looking to overturn one.”

The president also had words for the rioters who ransacked the Capitol, saying they were not “patriots” and were not trying to save democracy.  Biden said:  “You can’t love your country only when you win. You can’t obey the law only when it’s convenient. You can’t be patriotic when you embrace and enable lies. Those who stormed this Capitol, those in instigated and incited it and those who called on them to do so, held a dagger at the throat of America.”

CROOKSTON SCHOOL DISTRICT OFFERING BUS APP FOR PARENTS

crookston-public-schools-118

The Crookston School District has a bus app available for parents to track their children’s bus location. Once the app is downloaded, perimeters can be set by the individual using the app, and they can receive up-to-date information about where the child is instead of calling the school.

Crookston Public Schools Superintendent Jeremy Olson talked about the app and the reason for it. “The app is called BusQuest, and it’s an app that we’ve had all year,” said Olson. “People can go to our website and download it if they want too, otherwise if they have any questions, they can call the school, and we can certainly help with the downloading of the app. The reason for the app is to better communicate with parents. We’ve had a lot of call-ins in the past, and especially in these frigid temperatures, it’s nice for parents to know where their kids’ bus is and if they’re on the bus.

The BusQuest app will send text notifications to the users based on the perimeters that have been established. Olson discussed some of the perimeters that can be set. “You can set your own perimeters, so if you want to get a notification when the bus is two miles away or one mile away, you can certainly do that.” Said Olson. “When the bus crosses those that perimeter, the GPS in the bus recognizes that, and it will send you a text message. I have been using it myself, and it’s been working great. It’s great for days when the bus is running late, or roads may be blocked, and alternative paths maybe need to be used.”

When the app is downloaded, a username will need to be created. Olson walked through some of the steps that will need to be taken once the app is downloaded. “Like any app, you need a username and password,” said Olson. “So, you set that up in the app, and then once you have that downloaded on your smartphone, it becomes a simple login process. Once you’ve set the perimeters and have turned the app on and created your username and password, it will text you every single day.”

The app is especially valuable for parents who do not live in town and are out in the country. On the bus drivers’ side of things, the app also gives them step-by-step instructions for the routes that they are on. If parents have any questions or need help downloading the BusQuest app, they can contact the School District at 218-281-5313 or the Bus Garage at 218-281-5444. The app can also be downloaded on the app store or google play.

For the entire conversation with Superintendent Jeremy Olson, you can tune in to KROX Saturday morning at 8:35 for the Focus on Education program. Olson also talked about the Heated Bus Garage and how thankful the district is they decided to spend the money to keep their buses warm overnight during the school year. You can listen on 105.7 FM, 1260 AM, or by clicking “Listen Live” at the top of this page.

MINNESOTA REPORTS 6,936 NEW COVID CASES AND 62 DEATHS, POLK COUNTY HAS 30 NEW CASES

2labgraph-344

The Minnesota Department of Health released the COVID-19 numbers for today and the state reported 6,936 cases with 62 deaths. 0 deaths were reported in northwest Minnesota. Polk County reported 18 new cases with twelve probable, Roseau County had 18, Pennington County had 9 with nine probable, Marshall County had 4 with four probable, Red Lake County had 2 with four probable, Mahnomen County had 1 with one probable, and Norman County had 1. All the information is below –

Updated January 6, 2022
Updated weekdays at 11 a.m., with data current as of 4 a.m. the previous business day.

Data is for cases that were tested and returned positive. At-home test results are not counted by MDH.

All data is preliminary and may change as cases are investigated. Many data points are collected through an online survey or during case interviews; however, not all cases are interviewed. Case interviews are focused on people under 18 years old, hospitalizations, deaths, and people with vaccine breakthrough or variants. Data presented below is for all cases, regardless of interview status.

Positive PCR test results are considered confirmed cases. Positive antigen test results are considered probable cases. All probable cases get the same public health follow up and recommendations as cases confirmed by PCR tests.

Daily Update:

Because all data is preliminary and some reports require verification before counting as a case, the change in number of cumulative positive cases and deaths from one day to the next may not exactly equal the newly reported cases or deaths.

We continuously receive case reports and work to confirm, process, and report them as quickly as possible. Newly reported cases may not include every case reported to us since the last data update.

Today’s newly reported cases include some cases that were delayed in getting reported due to a processing error. All cases are listed by specimen collection date in the Minnesota Case Overview.
