Death toll rises to 6 after snow squall causes 80 vehicle pileup on I-95 in Pennsylvania

shutterstock_417717499

Pennsylvania state police reported on Wednesday that the death toll from an 80-vehicle pileup on a Pennsylvania highway Monday has risen to six people. Police also said 80 vehicles were involved in the crash — 39 commercial and 41 passenger vehicles — up from previous estimates of more than 50.  The crash also injured 24 people, who were taken to hospitals.

The crash occurred around 10:30 a.m. Monday after a snow squall blinded drivers and led to the crash on Interstate 81 near Minersville, about 100 miles northwest of Philadelphia.  A snow squall is described as ‘an intense, short-lived burst of heavy snowfall accompanied by gusty wind.’  While snow squalls typically only last about an hour and might only leave behind a moderate amount of snow, they can create deadly highway conditions, suddenly reducing visibility for drivers and causing slick roads.

Police reopened the interstate just after midnight Wednesday, according to a tweet from Pennsylvania State Police spokesman David Beohm. Snowy conditions and fires initially made it difficult for emergency services to access the scene. The road was already covered with snow prior to the squall and the pileup, making driving conditions even worse.

Bruce Willis to “step away” from acting after being diagnosed with aphasia

shutterstock_317285057

Bruce Willis is “stepping away” from his acting career after being diagnosed with aphasia, which leads to the loss of ability to understand or express speech, his family said in a statement posted to social media.

In an Instagram post, Rumer Willis, the eldest daughter of Demi Moore and Willis, shared that her father’s diagnosis “is impacting his cognitive abilities.”  The statement read:“To Bruce’s amazing supporters, as a family we wanted to share that our beloved Bruce has been experiencing some health issues and has recently been diagnosed with aphasia, which is impacting his cognitive abilities. As a result of this and with much consideration, Bruce is stepping away from the career that has meant so much to him.”  The statement was also signed by other members of Willis’ family: Emma, Demi, Scout, Tallulah, Mabel and Evelyn. Moore also shared the statement in a post on her Instagram page.

The news comes just weeks after Bruce Willis celebrated his 67th birthday. According to the Mayo Clinic, aphasia “is a condition that robs you of the ability to communicate. It can affect your ability to speak, write and understand language, both verbal and written.”  It most commonly arises after a stroke or brain injury, though can also come on more gradually to due the growth of a brain tumor or a degenerative disease. The family did not say what the cause is in Willis’ case.

‘Flash’ star Ezra Miller arrested, charged with harassment and disorderly conduct in Hawaii

shutterstock_756488275

“Flash” star Ezra Miller was arrested in Hilo, Hawaii early Monday following an incident at a karaoke bar. The 29-year-old actor was charged with disorderly conduct and harassment, according to a press release from the Hawaii Police Department.

According to South Hilo patrol officers, the 29-year-old Miller became agitated and started yelling obscenities at patrons singing karaoke, grabbing the microphone from a 23-year-old woman who was performing. Miller “later lunged at a 32-year-old man playing darts,” according to police.   The bar owner told officers that despite repeated attempts, he could not calm the unruly customer. Miller was charged with disorderly conduct and harassment and was released after posting $500 bail.

Miller made their debut as The Flash in 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Next month, Miller will appear in the film Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, reprising the role of Credence Barebone/Aurelius Dumbledore.

In the upcoming ‘The Flash” movie, set for release next year, Miller will be joined by both Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton reprising their roles as Batman. Sasha Calle as Supergirl and Kiersey Clemons as Iris West also star.

SPORTS FEEVER – March 31, 2022

jam-packed

It is hard to believe we are officially done with the Winter Sports Season after almost five months of activity.  I was hearing a lot of Section 8A Boys and Girls Basketball coaches wanting to seed the full section instead of breaking up into west and east teams.

Anybody that reads the column knows that I am a proponent of seeding all teams with no subsections.  Even though the Crookston girls would have gone to the section championship game for sure with the north/south split, I think it is the best for the section tournament fans and teams.  Crookston also could have been in the section championship playing Fergus Falls if they wouldn’t have lost the last two regular-season games.  So it is what it is.

I think the Section 8AA tourney was solid and the seeding went well.  It is nice to all be at one location and Detroit Lakes might be the place in the future. It is a beautiful gym and a huge upgrade from the old confines at Concordia-Moorhead, of which I have NEVER been a fan of the gym there.   It was a much better atmosphere at Detroit Lakes too.
I don’t have a problem with the first two rounds at the high seed.  It gives you a little more of an advantage to the top-seeded teams.

Hopefully Section 8A boys and girls basketball coaches will speak loud and clear as a group to the Region 8A committee and have it changed to seeding all the teams, instead of sub-sections.  We will see, but it is up to the coaches to push for the change if they really want it.

Congratulations to the Sacred Heart Eagle Boys Basketball team on a tremendous and record-breaking season!!  They finished the season 30-4 and were consolation champions in Class A!
Kobe Tomkinson was named to the all-tournament team.  We (KROX) were able to broadcast all three games and to say there was some interest in their games is an understatement.  We had almost 6,000 people listening to the three games online.  That doesn’t include the radio!  So that was pretty impressive and the interest from Sacred Heart and all of Section 8A was there!

It was the first-ever trip to state for Sacred Heart and they brought home some hardware.  It doesn’t get much better than that!   Now the baseball team will be one of the favorites in Section 8A this spring.

The NCAA Men’s Hockey Frozen Four will have a strong Minnesota and local connection with THE Minnesota Golden Gophers and Minnesota State Mankato Mavericks making up half of the field.

Minnesota State Mankato Men’s Hockey coach is Mike Hastings (a Crookston High School graduate), and he is assisted by Todd Knott, a Red Lake Falls Lafayette High School grad.

— — —

Mike Hastings has been named one of eight finalists for the 2022 Spencer Penrose Award, the American Hockey Coaches Association announced Tuesday.

The Spencer Penrose Award is presented annually to the CCM/AHCA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Coach of the Year.

The 2015 and 2021 Penrose Award winner, Hastings has led the Mavericks to five consecutive MacNaughton Cup championships and the school’s second NCAA Frozen Four appearance this season. Minnesota State rolled to the Central Collegiate Hockey Association regular season title with a 23-3-0 mark in league play, went undefeated in CCHA postseason tournament action to win the league’s Mason Cup as league playoff champions and, most recently, won the NCAA Albany Region with wins over Harvard and Notre Dame.

The Mavericks, who stand 37-5-0 for the season and have won their last 17 games in a row, play in the Frozen Four in semifinal action against Minnesota April 7.
Under Hasting’s tutelage, the Mavericks have posted a 273-89-24 mark during his ten seasons behind the bench in Mankato, the top record in college hockey during that span.

MSU has captured seven league regular-season titles, four league postseason championships and posted ten 20-win seasons during his tenure. Hastings earned his fifth conference coach of the year award earlier this season.

Joining Hastings on the finalist list are North Dakota’s Brad Berry, Denver’s David Carle, Quinnipiac’s Rand Pecknold, Northeastern’s Jerry Keefe, AIC’s Eric Lang, Minnesota’s Bob Motzko and Michigan’s Mel Pearson.

The 2022 Spencer Penrose Award winner will be announced on April 20th.

Minnesota State Moorhead Men’s basketball coach Chad Walthall has stepped down from his job as coach to take a job in the private sector.

There are a lot of names that are being mentioned and former Minnesota State Moorhead assistant coach and current University of Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagle Men’s Basketball coach Dan Weisse has been one name that has been casually thrown out.

I know Walthall was making $125,000 a year and I know for a fact that Weisse is nowhere near that so it could be a job that is enticing to Dan.  I haven’t talked to Dan about it, but I would think if he applied, he would be in the running.  Everybody in the conference knows Crookston is the toughest place in the NSIC to coach.  It is tough to recruit kids to the campus.  Every coach respects Dan because they know it isn’t a great job as far as success and low pay, limited finances for assistant coaches and many more reasons.   The Fargo Forum article said Crookston is a tough job…..and they are 100 percent correct.

We will see what happens.

THE POLK COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE HAS RECEIVED CALLS ABOUT A SCAM IN OUR AREA TARGETING SENIORS

download-2-1-7

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office has reported that it has received calls about scam phone calls in Polk County that are targeting senior citizens for their money that they are calling Grandkid Scams.

According to Polk County Sheriff Jim Tadman, it goes something like this: “Grandma, I need money for bail.” Or money for a medical bill or some other kind of trouble. The caller says it is urgent and may tell you to keep it a secret.

The caller may not be who you think it is. Scammers are good at pretending to be someone they are not. They can be convincing: Sometimes using information from social networking sites or hacking into your loved one’s email account. It will seem real, and they will pressure you to send money before you have time to think.
Here is what you can do:
1. Stop. Check it out. Look up your loved one’s phone number yourself or call another family member.
2. Pass this information on to a friend. You may not have gotten one of these calls, but chances are you know someone who will get one – if they haven’t already.

Please contact the Federal Trade Commission to report these scams at 1-877-382-4357.

These are real bad guys who want to take advantage of your love for your family and friends. By reporting the call and filing a complaint, you can help identify the imposters and stop them before they can hustle someone’s hard-earned money.

EMMA OSBORN’S RECORD-BREAKING SEASON ON THE HARDWOOD

emma-osborn-6

The Crookston Pirates girl’s basketball team is coming off a tremendous season which saw the team finish with a record of 23-6 with a Section 8AA semifinal appearance. A big reason for the team’s success was the play from Senior Emma Osborn, who shined all season, specifically from beyond the three-point line.

Osborn hit 102 three-pointers this past season shattering the previous single-season record of 72 for Crookston Pirates girl’s basketball. To put things into perspective, she finished her career with 122 three-pointers, which ranks 6th all-time in school history, and shows just how dominant of a season she had shooting the basketball.

One other accolade she accomplished this season was also tying the single-game record for made three-pointers of 7, which she did several times. According to her head coach Darin Zimmerman, she also could’ve easily broken the record if she had gotten more playing time. “We had such a great season as a team that in quite a few of those games we had a big enough lead where we could get other girls playing time,” said coach Zimmerman. “So ironically if we hadn’t been as good in some of those games, there is no doubt in my mind she would’ve broken that record more than once.”

Osborn started playing the game of basketball at a very young age, but it hasn’t always been smooth sailing. “I started back in kindergarten, and a fun fact is that I actually quit for an entire year because I got hit in the face with the ball one game,” said Osborn. “My friends ended up getting my back into the sport, and the rest was history from there. It’s become a sport I’ve loved.”

While Osborn has been playing the game all her life, her shooting skills really started to develop back in 9th grade. “I really started to shoot a lot in 9th grade while I was playing on the C team,” said Osborn. “I never really had a love for shooting, but I started to realize it was the strongest part of my game and I really wanted to put an emphasis on that.”

Coach Zimmerman is most proud of her development from last year to this year as a basketball player, and not just her ability to shoot the basketball. “Emma has always been a very strong shooter, that is one area that she really evolved in, and a skill set she always had,” said coach Zimmerman. “Specifically, she got much better at getting her shot off quickly. I don’t know if there was anyone in the state that had a quicker shot than she did this past year. All that to say, while she is a great shooter, she developed as a great basketball player as well over the years. She became a much better defender and was a pretty good rebounder for us as well. All around she became a better basketball player compared to a good scorer and shooter which may have been what she was a few years ago. I’m incredibly proud of the work she put in to get to that level and she stood out this year because of it.”

Another fun fact about Osborn and her shooting skills, is she like most shooters, can find her stroke in an instance. “There are sometimes where I will have the worst warmup ever, but as soon as we get into the game I shoot really well,” said Osborn. “One game that sticks out from this past year was against East Grand Forks. I think I scored 31 points that game, but in warmups, I could not hit anything. Similarly, I would sometimes shoot well in warmups and then have an off game. So, I don’t know why that was, but it was kind of funny how it would work like that.”

Osborn has also participated in tennis, softball, and Track & Field at one point or another over the years, but she says basketball along with tennis are the two that stand out. “Basketball and tennis are the two that have always hit closest to home,” said Osborn. “It’s interesting because basketball definitely has more stress on me, but I would say I’m much better at that than tennis. So, they both have their ups and downs.”

In a season with a lot of great accomplishments as a team, one of Osborn’s favorite memories happened before it even began. “I would go all the way back to this past summer and our trip to Wisconsin Dells as a team,” said Osborn. “I had never been there, and it was a great experience with the team. The other part would be just to have this one last season with the girls that I grew up playing with. That combined with all the success we had as a team and the season that I had just made this a very special year.”

Coach Zimmerman says his favorite memory of Osborn from this past season, and the thing that will always stick out is just how incredible her hot shooting streak was. “During her best stretch which was probably the middle of January to towards the end of the season, I will always remember thinking every time she shot the ball, I thought it was going in,” said Coach Zimmerman. “I was almost surprised when it wouldn’t go in. I don’t think I’ve ever had a player that consistent before as far as shooting the basketball from that distance. It just always seemed like it was going in and I’ll always remember that from this past season.”

While she may not be playing the game anymore, she does have advice for future Crookston Pirate girl’s basketball players, and younger shooters in the area. “For me, it was all about getting into the gym and putting the time in,” said Osborn. “You have to put time into it if you want to be successful, and if your shot isn’t where you want it or if you’re missing lots of shots, figure out why and spend time working on correcting it. That is when you will start to see success.”

Osborn is still deciding where she would like to attend college in the fall, but as of now, she does not see herself pursuing basketball at the next level. She plans on going into veterinary school and focusing on academics while in college to help get her to where she would like to be in life. One thing is for sure, she will be greatly missed from the Crookston Pirates girl’s basketball team next season.

CHS FFA CHAPTER IS GOING TO THE STATE FFA CONVENTION ON APRIL 24

ffa-conduct-of-chapter-meetings-315x420-1

The Crookston High School FFA Chapter has qualified to participate in the State FFA Convention from April 24-26 at the University of Minnesota after their high placings in the Region I competitions. The Chapter has four teams and around 25 students chosen to represent the High School and the entire Region I FFA. The teams and members going to the State Conventions are-

Horse Evaluation Team: Brianna Colborn, Naomi Olson, Kendall Bergquist, and Ella Huffman

Dairy Cattle Evaluation Team: Taylor Schultz, Emelia Hoerner, Jo Jo Dunbar, Taylor Wieland, and Avery Mathews

Small Animals Team: Christina Lisov, Hope Alexander, Lexi Reinhart, Sam Rezac, and Emily Shea

Conduct of Chapter Meetings Team: Ally Wagner, Addie Schiller, Teagan Fanfulik, Avery Mathews, Brea Lessard, Lydia Olson, and Emilee Smith

Nursery/Landscape: Adalyn Hanson, Jocelyn Johnson, Ally Wagner, and Rylee Solheim

Prepared Public Speakers: Jo Jo Wallace, Taylor Wieland, and Addie Schiller

Proficiency: Libby Salentine for Ag Ed, Jo Jo Wallace for Dir. Crop, and Clay Hanson for Fiber/Oil Crop

The State FFA Convention is the collection of all the FFA top teams and members from across the eight Regions of Minnesota to compete against each other in friendly competitions for each team. “They’re the best of the best of the State coming together to compete against each other in friendly competition. There’s a lot that goes on at State Conventions, and they’re a lot of fun.” Student Teacher Savanna Weber explained, “Most teams will have four students on them, so the Horse, Dairy Cattle, Small Animals, Nursery/Landscape teams will be competing as a team. They’ll each take a test and do some different experience-based things, some practicums, and a couple of other identification portions for these competitions. Our Conduct of Chapter Meetings team will demonstrate them working together to run a meeting following certain rules to conduct it. Our Prepared Public Speakers will give their speeches, answer questions about it, and be judged on their Prepared Public Speaking skills, which will be exciting. Then the Proficiency students will go through an application process, with judges that will review and compare them to other people in their categories.” The Chapter is looking to enjoy many events at the Convention outside of the competition, as this is the first one that they’ll be going to in-person after a couple of years. “We have a lot of fun activities planned for our Chapter. We’re going to the Minnesota Zoo and the Mall of America to experience some new things.” Weber explained, “So it’s really exciting to go down there and meet all these new people and chapters across the State and do some awesome communicating with other people.” The Chapter will also be introduced as a new chapter to the Convention as it was formed last spring and will be attending the Convention for the first time.

In order to qualify for the State Convention, the Chapter first had to compete in the Region I competition to place high enough to qualify for the Convention. The Crookston FFA Dairy Team had placed 3rd in their competition with the Horse Evaluation Team placing 1st out of 18 teams to advance to State. Chapter President and Proficiency: Agriculture Education candidate Libby Salentine and Proficiency: Fiber/Oil Crop candidate Clay Hanson had their projects place in the top three projects out of the entire State! With Salentine explaining how she assists the teachers and students in preparing and completing their assignments every meeting and completed a project showing and describing how she assists her Chapter, and completed an interview at the Region I competition about her work. “You don’t really prepare a lot for the Proficiency; you just fill it out to the best of your ability. So, after the Region I competition, I got some feedback from the judges, and I went back and fixed some grammatical problems and tried to use a better choice of words, then submitted it again.” Salentine explained, “Then I get to see how well I did once we get to States, and that’s pretty exciting because I know that I placed in the top three in the State, and if I took first, I could have the opportunity to go to the National competition.” High School Freshmen Jo Jo Wallace will take part in two events with the Chapter, Prepared Public Speaking, and Proficiency: Dir. Crop. Wallace will participate in all three events with different projects planned for each one, such as Prepared Public Speaking, where she wrote and practiced a six-to-eight-minute speech to the Region I judges then answered questions about her subject. After receiving feedback from the judges on her speech and speaking skills, she has revamped and edited it to be ready for the State Convention.

The Chapter is very excited to be going to the Convention for the new experiences, the chance to meet new people, and the chance for the Chapter to get closer. Especially since it is their first year as an official chapter of the FFA and so many members are participating. “I’m very excited to go and meet new people and experience something new to the people in our Chapter,” Wallace explains. “So many of us are going, and it’ll be a great opportunity for us to get closer to the people in our Chapter. I’m also excited to be doing some stuff that I’ve never done before, like going to the mall and the Zoo, and I’ve never been to the Zoo.” The Chapter is excited to be representing Region I as well as Crookston in a way that hasn’t been done before and to be recognized as a new Chapter at the State Convention. Chapter President Libby Salentine is excited to finally participate in this Convention after hearing much about it from people close to her. “FFA is a big part of my extended family. Cousins I have from North Dakota go down to the State Competition every year, and I always hear about how fun it is and the opportunities they get, and I’ve always wanted to do that.” Salentine explained, “Now having the opportunity presenting itself is an amazing experience. And having so many people coming to compete at our first State Convention is something that I feel we’re all pretty humbled about, just because this is our first year, and a lot of us haven’t competed in this manner before. I think it’s just a huge honor for us to go and represent Crookston.” Student Teacher Weber expressed her pride in the Chapter for their accomplishments that she’s seen over the few months she has been with the Chapter. Expressing the honor, she felt working with them just to get ready for the Region Competitions and for their dedication in coming in before and after school for their projects. And believes that the skills they are learning and the events they are competing in will help them in their future with new skills such as leadership qualities like public speaking as well as learning other things such as farm animals, dairy, and landscaping.

The Crookston Region I FFA Chapter will be going to the State FFA Convention at the University of Minnesota from April 24-26 with about 25 students and a chance to go to the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana, on October 26. The Chapter will have their Region I Banquet at the Crookston High School on Wednesday, April 6, where they will recognize Jo Jo Wallace for receiving her Region Officer Position that she received earlier in the month.
