SENATOR PAUL GAZELKA GETS BIG ENDORSEMENT FROM MN POLICE AND PEACE OFFICERS ASSOCIATION

paul-gazelka

Senator Paul Gazelka has accepted the endorsement of the Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association (MPPOA) in his run for Governor of Minnesota. The MPPOA and Gazelka released the following joint statement:

MPPOA Executive Director Brian Peters said, “The Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association proudly endorses Paul Gazelka to be our state’s next Governor. He is an extraordinary supporter of first responders and public safety officials and stands against attempts to defund and dismantle the police. He will always promote public safety proposals that keep communities safe. On behalf of the largest public safety association in Minnesota, we are proud to support Paul Gazelka for Governor.”

“I am humbled and honored to receive the endorsement of the MPPOA, the largest association representing licensed peace officers in the State of Minnesota,” said Gazelka. “This endorsement is further acknowledgement of the ongoing work we have done to support our women and men in blue—the people who risk their lives every day for all of us in Minnesota. Thank you to all of the members of the MPPOA for this powerful endorsement.”

The MPPOA is by no means the only organization to recognize Senator Gazelka’s contributions to public safety. In 2021, the Minnesota Chiefs of Police Association (MCPA) presented Gazelka with the organization’s bi-partisan Legislator of the Year Award, which recognizes members of the Minnesota House or Senate or the state’s Congressional delegation for their leadership and support on important legislation impacting law enforcement and public safety.

The National Troopers Coalition (NTC), representing over 42,000 members, endorsed Senator Gazelka in September 2021, shortly after he announced his candidacy in the Governor’s race. The Minnesota State Troopers Association does not issue endorsements in political races.

PIRATE BOYS TENNIS BEATS FERGUS FALLS, LOSES TO EGF

erik-coauette-2

The Crookston Pirate Boys Tennis team had a beautiful afternoon for tennis and lost to the East Grand Forks Green Wave 4-3 before bouncing back to beat Fergus Falls 5-2 in two Section 8A matchups in a triangular played in East Grand Forks.

CROOKSTON VS EAST GRAND FORKS –
Crookston and East Grand Forks opened up their seasons with losses to Minnewaska Area.  Crookston lost 4-3, and East Grand Forks lost 7-0.  So both teams weren’t sure what to expect going into the section matchup, thinking it would be a close match.  They were correct in their assumptions as East Grand Forks used a bit of a different lineup and beat the Pirates 4-3.

East Grand Forks showed they have some solid players at the top of their singles and doubles line-up, but Crookston showed they have a little more depth.
East Grand Forks won the first and second singles matches in straight sets.  They also won the first and second doubles matches in straight sets for their four wins.
Crookston’s wins came at third singles, with Reggie Winjum winning easily 6-0, 6-0. “He was his normal consistent self and played a great match,” said Coach Pat Janorschke. Isaac Thomforde won easily at four singles 6-1, 6-1.” Isaac is playing well to start the season,” said Coach Janorschke. “He plays hard and has made a great improvement over the few years he has been playing tennis.”  The third victory came with a hard-fought win at third doubles, with Tim Brule and Sam Widseth winning 7-5, 6-4. “Those two give it 100 percent in practice, and I told them they were going to get a chance, and they are taking advantage of it,” said coach Janorschke. “They have been playing some great tennis so far this season.”
East Grand Forks, who graduated over a handful of players from last year’s team, earned a 4-3 victory.  It looks like the teams will have some good battles throughout the season. “We started the match a little slow and played a lot better in the second set,” said Coach Janorschke. “The guys turned the second set around, and we will see the Green Wave a few more times this year.”

CROOKSTON VS FERGUS FALLS-
Crookston’s second and final opponent of the day was the Fergus Falls Otters, who also graduated most of their lineup from last year.  Fergus Falls proved to be solid at the top of the lineup with wins at first and second singles.  Crookston’s Erik Coauette won the first set of his first singles match 6-4 before losing the second set 6-2, which forced a third set.  Erik played a great match but came up short in a 10-7 loss. “He had an excellent match, and it could have gone either way,” said Coach Janorschke. “He is another player that has improved from last year, and he is going to have a great season for us.”

Crookston won the remaining five matches as the bottom of the singles lineup continued their outstanding play.  Reggie Winjum, at third singles, won a three-setter 6-1, 4-6, 10-7. “Reggie took it to him in the first set,” said Coach Janorschke. “After struggling in the second set, Reggie bounced back to get the win and played better in the third set, and that was good to see him fight back to get the win.” Isaac Thomforde won easily at fourth singles with a 6-3, 6-1 victory. “He started a little slow in the first set,” said Coach Janorshcke. “He picked up his play and finished strong.”  Winjum and Thomforde have a combined 11-1 record this season. “They are a couple of young guys stepping up their game this year,” said Coach Janorschke. “They have had a great start to the season and have played well.  It shows our team depth when we can go out knowing we will likely get two wins in those spots in the lineup.”
The First doubles team of Evan Christensen and Jack Garmen struggled in the first set before settling in to win 6-4, 6-0.  “They started slow and just weren’t on the same page early on,” said Coach Janorschke. “They picked things up and dominated the rest of the match, which was good to see.”
Second doubles, Nathan Kelly and Kaleb Armstrong, won the longest match of the day by a 6-4, 6-4 score. “That was a long battle.  Kaleb is always good at the net,” said Coach Janorschke. “We put Nathan with him today, and they got used to playing with each other and outlasted their opponents in the match, and it was good to see them grind out a win.”
Two youngsters paired up again at third doubles as Tim Brule and Sam Widseth won 6-2, 6-1 to give Crookston the 5-2 victory.  “They had a great day today,” said Coach Janorschke. “They battle out there, play hard, and give it their all, and it is good to see them get rewarded with two wins today.”

Crookston is now 2-4 on the year and is scheduled to be at Bemidji on Thursday, but that could be postponed. “Who knows what will happen the rest of the week, but it doesn’t look good for us playing in Bemidji, but who knows,” said Coach Janorschke. “We will have to see what the weather does, but hopefully, we can get outdoors next week.”

WASHINGTON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL WILL HOLD ITS ANNUAL KINDERGARTEN ROUND-UP ON WEDNESDAY

The Washington Elementary School is holding its annual Kindergarten Round-Up on Wednesday, April 13. The event is for parents and children that will be in kindergarten next fall and at least the age of five years old by September 1. The event will hold two sessions for parents and their children on Wednesday, the first one being from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. and another from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m., with doors opening and pre-registration beginning 15 minutes before the start of both sessions.

The event is meant to show these children and their parents what it will be like going into kindergarten. “We get to tell parents and show kids that will be in kindergarten next year what kindergarten is like at Washington School.” Washington Principal Denice Oliver explained, “Our ultimate goal is to help parents learn more about Kindergarten at Washington School and then help children with that transition into kindergarten, which takes many steps along the way to help them feel comfortable in our environment. But our goal is that by the end of Round-up, families and children feel like they are a part of our school family.” Oliver explains that the introduction to kindergarten is very important for the children to feel comfortable and welcome on their first days in kindergarten and encourages any parent with a child going to kindergarten next year to come to Kindergarten Round-Up as it will help the students feel like they’re going to a safe place and that the teachers are there to help them.

At the Round-Up, the children will participate in some fun activities with their parents and teachers, while the parents can ask the teachers any questions they may have about kindergarten. The families will first go to the Washington School Gym, where they will fill out some paperwork they need complete to have their children be eligible to begin kindergarten. The students will then go with the teachers to the classrooms while the parents attend a brief program about the Crookston Public Schools Kindergarten program with Principal Oliver. The parents will then join the children in the classroom for activities with their children and teachers. The children and their families will also receive items for the class and fun activities they can do while waiting for the school year to start. “You can expect your child to receive a free “Kindergarten Toolkit” item to get ready for kindergarten.” Kindergarten teacher Monica Parenteau explained. “Each toolkit has a T-shirt, scissors, a nameplate with a number line, some nursery rhymes, and things like a “Countdown to Kindergarten” calendar with little things they can do to get ready for the school year.” The parents then will ride the school bus with their children, which has become a personal favorite event to the teachers and families. They can also take part in a small photo booth to capture the memories of their child’s first time in their kindergarten classroom. She also emphasized the importance of the event, with it being a time the parents can meet the teachers that will be teaching their children next year, as well as the programs and curriculums Washington School offers them.

The school will then follow up with the families that come to the event for the rest of the spring and summer to learn their thoughts and figure out the enrollment for next year. The school will then start making class lists and send out information to all the families to connect with them and help them with what to do next. “For instance, in the Parent Toolkit they receive from the Round-Up, it will have a calendar of events that parents need to be aware of.” Principal Oliver explained, “For instance, our August Crookston Public Schools Registration Day, so they know that that’s the day. Even though you’ve come to Kindergarten Round-Up and filled out a bit of paperwork, there’s more paperwork in the fall that we need. So, all of that is information that we can give to those families along the way.” The parents are also allowed to bring in their child’s early childhood screening records, birth certificates, and immunization records if they did not get them completed in Crookston.

The Washington Elementary School’s annual Kindergarten Round-Up event will take place on Wednesday, April 13, in the Washington Elementary School gym and kindergarten classrooms. It will have two sessions that parents and children can come to from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. or from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m., with doors opening and pre-registration beginning 15 minutes before the event’s start (1:15 p.m. and 2:45 p.m.). Children that are looking to enter Kindergarten must at least be the age of five years old by September 1 in order to take part in the Round-Up. For more information about Kindergarten Round-Up, you can contact the Washington Elementary School during its school hours at 218-281-2762.

SUMMIT SENIOR APARTMENTS TELL US ABOUT LOIS BROOKS

lois-brooks-405x420-1

The SUMMIT Senior Apartments with Assisted Living Services treasures the life experiences of our tenants.

Lois Brooks just has a way with the visiting dogs at Benedictine. “It is fun to get to pet the dogs! I love my girl Chewy. She is just a peach, and I look forward to visiting my son every Sunday to see her. She is a Cocker Spaniel and so good!” Lois shares a picture on her phone and points out a Chewy toy animal look-alike in her bedroom, carefully wrapped in a blanket. “She is always close to my heart.”

Lois was an only child, born and raised here in Crookston. Her mom worked for Peterson Biddick, candling eggs, and her dad at the Railroad Depot. Lois married at 16 years old. “My husband’s name was Lawrence, but everyone called him Buddy. He worked at the local Creamery and then the AC or the Ag College, which is now UMC. He then spent over 19 years as a police officer while I raised eight kids. Six boys and two girls. Life was always fun and busy”. Lois said her kids are involved in various occupations, including being a Pastor, Principal, and Crystal Sugar employee.

Lois speaks of the joy of days gone by. “I shared a garden with my mother-in-law. We were so busy canning tomatoes, beet pickles, and dill pickles. The kitchen was a busy place at our house. We had meals as a family. Everyone liked a good hotdish”.

Lois still has a green thumb as her plants flourish in her cheerful apartment. “I stay busy embroidering too. I made 32 pillowcases one Christmas.”

Despite her involvement with family and friends, Lois somehow still has time to stay up on the latest sporting events. “My boys played football, and the youngest wrestled. I enjoy basketball on TV and, of course, the Twins and Vikings.” And if there is a good western on TV, especially starring the Duke (John Wayne), Lois just might be taking it in.

“I like my life here. The activities are fun, and I am happy to get a little help with things. I like to go to Bingo twice a week and play cards daily. Plus, it is fun to see a movie now and then. It is a good place to call home, and it’s right here in Crookston.”

GF PUBLIC SAFETY ANSWERING POINT 911 CENTER CELEBRATES NATIONAL PUBLIC SAFETY TELECOMMUNICATIONS WEEK

grand-forks-public-safety

Grand Forks Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) 911 Center is celebrating the second full week of April (April 10-16) as National Public Safety Telecommunications Week. Grand Forks County Commission Chair Tom Falck and Grand Forks City Mayor Brandon Bochenski have signed proclamations recognizing the essential work dispatchers do to keep the public and responder communities safe. This week, sponsored by the Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO) International and celebrated annually, honors the thousands of men and women who respond to emergency calls, dispatch emergency professionals and equipment, and render life-saving assistance to the world’s citizens.

The call volume to the center continues to Increase: “Last year our calls for service in our center that we dispatched responders to totaled 106,693 incidents and processed 101,779 telephone calls. Dispatchers are the unseen voices – and the “first” first responders. This is the highest ever calls for service in a year. 2020 was the next highest, at 94,847,” Stated Shannon LaHaise, PSAP Manager.

Technology Complexity will continue to Evolve: It is very important to note that Emergency Services Communications is much broader than simply E-911. While dialing 911 most often initiates the emergency response, the day-by-day, hour-by-hour communications between dispatchers and responders, the ongoing contact during an emergency, the location information, mapping software, text to 911, and numerous other components make it possible for local emergency services to arrive and deliver services in the shortest time possible. This will become increasingly complex as they continue to work with surrounding PSAPs and as their statewide system, Next Generation 911 call delivery continues to develop. They have implemented new call processes to better manage increased calls for service and an increase in radio traffic, in combination with advancements utilizing our Computer Aided Dispatch System. They will continue to work in tandem with our partners across North Dakota for system redundancies and cost efficiencies and continue to collaborate with our responders across our County, region, and state to share and gain best practices.

“The skill sets required for multi-tasking in an emergency situation are critical – and our staff are some of the best!” LaHaise said. “Thank a dispatcher today for the great service they provide to our citizens and our responders. They are the voice behind the scenes – ensuring Grand Forks County has access to vital public safety services making greater Grand Forks a safe place to live, play, and work!”

The Grand Forks Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) is proud to be a direct communication link for 33 agencies in our County. Providing a single point of contact for the citizens and visitors of Grand Forks County and Cities therein for immediate and direct access to Fire, Police, and Medical Services.
