CHS COMMUNITY PROJECTS CLASS CREATES NEW FRONT DESK FOR CHS SPORT ADMISSIONS

img-2327-572x420-1

The Crookston High School’s Community Projects class is always working to create new and improved projects for the community and the school, and recently, a team of four students came together to add another completed project to the school. Crookston High School students Evan Christensen, Mason Owens, Elliot Bartrum, and Eric Coauette built a new front admissions desk at the entrance of the High School.

Community Projects class teacher Travis Oliver always believed that the front desk used to collect admissions for basketball, volleyball, and other sports games was too dull and in need of an upgrade and assigned the team of juniors and seniors to make a new and improved desk. Senior Mason Owens took the lead on the project, conducting the planning and main construction of the table. “We designed it to look like a figure of a ship. That was the idea behind it.” Senior Mason Owens explains, “If you feel the wood on the top, it feels uneven like the deck of a pirate ship. The top is made of hickory wood with hickory corner posts and alder wood on the sides with shiplap joints to connect the boards together.” Senior Evan Christensen assisted in cutting the boards and painting with Junior Elliot Bartrum, and Senior Eric Coauette helped with staining and applying polyurethane to the final project.

Owens then went into the details of the process of building the desk and some of the new additions he and his team added to it to improve it from the original desk. “First, we built the framework, using the same construction techniques as if we were building a wall in a house. We then added the sides with the shiplap and the corners and the top, where we biscuited and joined it together with glue.” Owens explained, “On the inside, it’s all plywood-backed and painted black, so it’s all shadowed out when you look in there. We added shelves on the inside to help hold purses or money containers for the people running admissions.” Other features added to the desk is a metal Pirate sign attached to the front and the addition of wheels to the legs of the desk that can make it easier for people to move if they need to and position it in any way they would like, but this led to some problems the team had to overcome as they were building it. “We had trouble with the wheels at first because we made a measuring mistake, and the cut was too high, so we had to adjust the legs.” Owens explained, “But when we put the wheels on, it was “tippy” so we had to figure out how to balance the legs so it wouldn’t rock, but we were able to fix it, and other than that, building it was pretty slick.” The team also had the challenge of working short-handed for a while as Senior Eric Coautte was away during some of the construction.

All four students agreed that the project came out well and believe that the admissions collectors will enjoy the new features they added to it. They reported that they also have more projects in store for the rest of the year, including a new display case for the Leo Club for all of their awards they received over the years, according to Owens. Junior Elliot Bartrum is working on a new scrape wood table that will be given away to a local business in a raffle. We will continue to check back in with the Community Projects class and its students when they have the latest projects completed.

UMC BASEBALL DROPS HEARTBREAKER TO WAYNE STATE, GAME TWO POSTPONED UNTIL TOMORROW DUE TO RAIN

b1-1-448x420-1

The University of Minnesota Crookston (UMC) Golden Eagles baseball team tried to sneak in a doubleheader with the Wayne State Wildcats on Sunday at the UMC Baseball Field. The two teams were able able to complete the first game with Wayne State scoring two runs in the last inning for a 2-1 win, but game two was halted in the top of the third inning because of rain, with Wayne State in front 8-4. Play is scheduled to resume tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. at the UMC Baseball Field weather permitting.

GAME ONE –
The first game was a pitcher’s duel as both starters were dialed in, striking out hitters, and giving neither team a good scoring chance early on. In total, only one base runner reached base in the first three innings of the game.

UMC would get their first base runner in the bottom of the fourth inning, with a 2-out double from Jake Hjelle (So. East Grand Forks, Minn.). The Wildcats would work out of the inning getting the next hitter out and keeping the score 0-0 after four complete innings of play.

Jake Dykhoff (Jr. Wadena, Minn.) continued his excellent outing on the mound for the Golden Eagles putting up a scoreless top of the fifth inning, and the offense finally broke through for the first run of the game in the home half of the inning. Mitch Goodwin (So. Prior Lake, Minn.) would slash a two-out double putting himself in scoring position, and Jack Peppel (Sr. Olivia, Minn.) would deliver a rbi single scoring Goodwin and giving the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead after five innings.

Wayne State would go 1-2-3 in the top of the sixth inning, and after UMC couldn’t add an insurance run, Dykhoff would take the mound looking for the complete-game shutout victory. The Wildcats would start off with a leadoff single, and after stealing second base with one out, Dykhoff would get another strikeout putting UMC one out away from a much-needed NSIC win. The count would be worked to full, and on the 3-2 offering, the Wildcats hitter would send a shot over the left-center fence giving them their first and only runs of the game to take a 2-1 lead in the final inning.

UMC would be unable to put a rally together in the bottom of the seventh inning, and Wayne State would secure the 2-1 victory over the Golden Eagles. For UMC it is another heartbreaking late-game loss in NSIC play, after an excellent pitching performance.

GAME TWO –

As the rain started to fall at the beginning of game two, the offenses started to breakthrough. The Wildcats would put up five first-run innings and add three more for an early 8-0 lead. In the bottom of the second inning, however, the Golden Eagles would respond. Ben Thoma (Sr. Clearbrook, Minn.), Brad Morris (Sr. Auckland, New Zealand), and Chad Musser (Sr. Plymouth, Minn.) would all get hits to start the inning and plated two runs. Goodwin would continue the hot plate appearances and knock a base hit moving Musser up to third base. The Golden Eagles would get tricky on the base path, and after Goodwin stole second base, Musser would come across to score on the throwdown giving UMC their third run of the inning. Two batters later Matt Nunn (Jr. Edina, Minn.) would get a 2-out single scoring Goodwin and giving the Wildcats just an 8-4 lead after a four-run bottom of the second for UMC.

As the Golden Eagles went to take the field for the top of the third inning, the rain continued to pour down. The umpires would get together with the coaches and decide to call the game for the time being. Play will resume tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. with Wayne State leading 8-4 in the top of the third inning. The teams will also play the third game of the series following the conclusion of the current game. With the loss in game one, UMC is now 12-19 and 4-8 in the NSIC. Wayne State improved to 14-13 and 8-6 in the NSIC with the win.

POLK COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE IS CELEBRATING NATIONAL PUBLIC SAFETY TELECOMMUNICATIONS APPRECIATION WEEK

polk-county-sheriffs-office-2

Not all heroes wear capes. Some wear headsets.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office is celebrating April 10-16 as National Public Safety Telecommunications Appreciation Week. It is a time when we thank our telecommunications personnel who serve our citizens and public safety agencies 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Polk County has ten full-time telecommunicators who serve Polk County and surrounding areas, fielding more than 32,000 calls annually. Their work isn’t seen by many people aside from public safety personnel; however, they play a vital role in keeping our communities safe.

Polk County Telecommunicator Supervisor Nancy Shafer said, “Today’s Telecommunicators operate a lot differently than they did in the past” “We have to think faster, work harder, all while remaining calm while there is chaos around us.” She is proud of the team. Many of them have stayed in this profession for long careers. “Not everyone is cut out to be a telecommunicator,” she said. “We hear everything from a road report to a serious life-threatening medical call.”

Polk County Sheriff Jim Tadman stated, “It takes a special person to do this job. Answering the critical incident life-threatening call takes a toll on you”. “They listen to everyone’s worst day and provide calm, clear direction until help arrives. They are a lifeline for our residents in need and vital for our Law Enforcement, Fire, EMS. Our telecommunicators come from many different fields and many different backgrounds. One thing they have in common is they have hearts of gold”.

This week, we thank our telecommunications personnel and recognize them for the heroes they are.

Please join us in thanking our dedicated team of telecommunicators and recognizing the service and commitment of telecommunications professionals throughout the nation.
