CHS FFA CHAPTER WEIGHS IN ON THEIR PREPARATIONS FOR STATE COMPETITION

img_20211117_151008_828-1-420x420-1

Over the past school year, students in the Crookston FFA Chapter have been competing for a spot to attend the MN State FFA Convention. This year, 26 Crookston FFA members have earned that spot! These members will be traveling down to the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, for their competition. “I am so proud of these members. We have worked hard and earned a spot for these students to attend.” Said Mrs. Whitney Rupprecht, Ag Ed Teacher & FFA Advisor.

The Horse Evaluation Team placed 1st at Regions, which secured their spot at State. Brianna Colborn, Naomi Olson, Kendal Bergquist, and Ella Huffman will be representing CHS. “The horse contest is a lot of fun but is challenging. We practice 1-2 times per week in the mornings.”  Brianna Colborn explained. Students in the horse contest judge six classes of horses and complete a comprehensive knowledge exam.

With two individuals competing and taking home both 1st and 2nd, Joslyn Wallace and Taylor Weiland have been preparing for State for some time. Joslyn’s speech is about Bees and the effects they have on people. Taylor’s speech is on the need for Agricultural Education. These two wrote a 6–8 minute speech in MLA format and will present it to the judges in multiple rounds. “Mrs. Rupprecht told me that she was signing me up for a speech, and I just went with it. I have been working very hard writing, memorizing, and practicing my speech.” Joslyn Wallace explained.

Small Animal Vet Science Team, consisting of Samantha Rezac, Emily Shea, Hope Alexander, and Lexi Reinhart, will look at various animal body systems, take an exam, and identify breeds of dogs, cats, birds, fish, rabbits, reptiles, and parasites. “I love all of the FFA events. I am very excited for State!!” said Hope Alexander.

Coming in with a big moo, the Dairy Evaluation team consisting of Avery Mathews, Emelia Hoerner, Taylor Schulz, Taylor Weiland, and Joslyn Wallace will judge at least four classes of dairy cows, complete a record analysis of a dairy farm, and take a comprehensive exam of their knowledge in the dairy industry. “The exams and records were really hard! I also have gotten better when I have to give reasons to the judges.” Taylor Schulz explained.

Parliamentary Procedure is a way to run a successful, fair meeting. Students have learned the procedure using Robert’s Rules of Order and will travel to State to host a mock meeting and complete an exam on the rules of parliamentary procedure. The team is made up of President– Allysen Wagner, Vice President-Avery Mathews, Secretary-Teagan Fanfulik, Treasurer-Addie Schiller, Reporter- Brea Lessard, Sentinel-Lydia Olson, Student Advisor-Emilee Smith. “Parli is really fun but hard. I love being President and running the meeting, but it puts a lot of pressure on me to do it right.” Allysen Wagner explained.

The Landscape team, consisting of Rylee Solheim, Adalyn Hanson, Jocelyn Johnson, and Allysen Wagner, will be identifying commonly used trees, shrubs, plants, and tools. Additionally, they will be completing a practicum which will allow them to put their knowledge to the test. “I am excited to attend!” Rylee Solheim said.

FFA Member, Addison Schiller, has memorized all five paragraphs of the FFA and will recite it to a panel of judges, followed by questions. “This is really helping me with my public speaking skills. I want to do this again next year!” Addison Schiller explained.

Crookston FFA has 3 top placing Proficiency applications. The applications are based upon a student’s Supervised Agricultural Experience, a.k.a. their work-based learning activities. Libby Salentine won the region event, and her application was advanced to State, where it was announced that she was among the top three! Libby’s application was on her experience with Agricultural Education in the classroom. “I have learned so much working with Mrs. Rupprecht,” Libby explained. Clay Hanson won the region event, and his application was also advanced to State, where it was announced that he was in the top three as well! Clay’s application was on his work experience with a local fiber and oil crop farm. Joslyn Wallace placed 2nd at the regional event, and her application advanced to the State. “My SAE is working on a farm where we raise organic edible beans. I love what I do and hope to be a crop farmer one day.” Joslyn Wallace explained.

Only a handful of individuals are selected, but Libby Salentine will have the honor of being an Ag Ambassador at the MN State FFA Convention. Libby will receive training in how to communicate with businesses. From there, she will be working with CEOs and Presidents of companies to convey the message of agriculture and FFA. Joslyn was also selected as the one representative from Region I to be on the 22-23 State Officer Nominating Committee. Joslyn will travel to State FFA Convention early and host numerous rounds of interviews to select the new officer team. Her job is to represent all of Northwest Minnesota in selecting the new team.

Mrs. Rupprecht and the Crookston FFA Chapter were one of 3 schools awarded the Models of Innovation-Strengthening Agriculture for her work to create awareness and education in agriculture. After a lengthy application, Crookston FFA was awarded and will be recognized for its work at the chapter level. Crookston ranked Gold and Superior, and the application will be advancing to the National FFA Competition. “I am very excited to have these students compete and get a ton of experiences from State FFA Convention. It has been three years since Minnesota has held a State Convention, and these students are getting an amazing opportunity!” Whitney. Rupprecht explained.

The Crookston FFA Chapter will travel to the University of Minnesota for the State FFA Convention from April 24-26, with a chance to go to the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana, on October 26.

Pictures of the State-bound students and teams can be seen below.

DNR BEAR HUNTING LICENSE APPLICATIONS ARE AVAILABLE UNTIL MAY 6

Prospective bear hunters have until Friday, May 6, to apply for a bear hunting license from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. Applications for the 2022 season can be submitted online, at any license agent, or via telephone at 888-665-4236.

A total of 3,605 licenses are available in 14 permit areas for the season, which opens Thursday, Sept. 1, and closes Sunday, Oct. 16.

The number of permits available is based on Minnesota’s bear population, which has stabilized and started to increase during the past nine years because of more conservative permit quotas. Populations in nearly all bear permit areas are stable to increasing. Several permit areas in northern Minnesota require additional permit reductions to stabilize their populations.

Notable changes for the 2022 season

After conversations with the Red Lake Nation, DNR split Minnesota’s Northwest Angle off into its own bear permit area, creating permit area 14. Bear hunting has occurred in the Northwest Angle for decades, but the area was part of permit area 12, which is directly to the south.

Differing landscape, population dynamics, vegetation, and food resources, as well as concerns about increased bear and human interactions, prompted the split. The new permit area provides the DNR greater flexibility to develop hunting strategies specific to the Northwest Angle’s bear population and control hunting pressure in response to the local bear population.

For 2022, DNR is offering a small number of hunting permits in the Northwest Angle, reflecting a status-quo level of harvest for the first year of this new area.

The DNR also has modified the boundaries of permit areas 28 and 47 to follow the Leech Lake Reservation boundary. This change is consistent with adjustments made to deer permit area 197 in 2021.

Lottery winners will be notified by Wednesday, June 1. The deadline to purchase bear hunting licenses awarded by lottery is Monday, Aug. 1. Any remaining unpurchased licenses will be available over the counter starting at noon Thursday, Aug. 4.

An unlimited number of bear licenses will also be sold over the counter for the no-quota area, including east-central and far northwestern Minnesota. No-quota licenses are valid only in the no-quota area.

Hunters with either a quota or no-quota license interested in taking a problem bear should contact the area DNR wildlife manager (mndnr.gov/Areas/Wildlife) to be added to the hunter contact list if the opportunity arises.

Complete instructions about how to apply for a license, maps of permit areas, and a listing of permit availability for each area are available on the DNR website (mndnr.gov/Hunting/Bear).

Roger Calvin Carr – Obit

roger-carr-feature-photo-final-e1649420611279

Roger Calvin Carr, 74, formerly of Crookston, MN, passed away April 5, 2022, at Sanford Medical Center of Mayville, ND, early Tuesday morning, April 5, 2022.

Roger was born on February 12, 1948, in Moorhead, MN to Chester and Maxine (Trader) Carr. He grew up in the Barnesville, MN area and attended Barnesville schools.  He later began working at various jobs including construction work and truck driving. Roger was united in marriage to Mary Stephen on August 23, 1996, at Moorhead, MN. The couple made their home at Felton, MN until Mary’s passing. Roger had previous marriages to Beverly Nodsle, Janie Seelye, and Beverly Johnson. From these unions, 5 children were born: David, Troy, Becki, Kelly, and Bonnie.  Roger moved to Crookston several years ago and until his retirement due to ill health had been a seasonal farming employee for the past 8 years for Owen Larson and his nephews, Ben and Matt Larson, at Climax, MN.

Roger enjoyed visiting with family and friends and would give rides to anyone in need of transportation. He would often say to friends, “Let’s go for a ride”, which would usually end up at a casino; be it the Shooting Star, Seven Clans, or a new favorite, the Grand Casino. Roger would often go to Little Falls, MN to visit his nonbiological family and enjoy home-cooked meals and barbecuing while playing Skip-Bo or Corn hole. Senate confirms Ketanji Brown Jackson to be first Black woman to sit on Supreme Court

The Senate voted on Thursday to confirm Ketanji Brown Jackson, making her the first Black woman to serve as a justice on the U.S. Supreme Court. Senators voted 53-47 in favor of her confirmation. Three Republicans — Sens. Susan Collins of Maine, Mitt Romney of Utah and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska — voted with Democrats to approve President Biden’s first nomination to the country’s highest court.

Jackson was with President Biden in the Roosevelt Room of the White House to watch the historic Senate vote. The White House also said Biden, Jackson and Vice President Kamala Harris will speak about the confirmation on Friday. The 51-year-old Jackson, a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, was nominated in February; last month, she underwent questioning for two days before the Senate judiciary committee. While some Republicans grilled Jackson on her track record and accused her of being soft on crime as a judge, the committee ultimately passed Jackson’s nomination on to the full Senate.

Jackson’s confirmation maintains the Supreme Court’s 6-3 conservative edge. The last justice nominated and confirmed to the high court was Amy Coney Barrett in 2020. She was appointed by former President Donald Trump to succeed liberal Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

House passes bill to provide $55 billion in grants for restaurants and other small businesses impacted by COVID-19

On Thursday, the House passed a $55 billion bill to aid restaurants and small businesses impacted by COVID-19.
The bill includes $42 billion for restaurants and $13 billion for other small businesses. The Senate still must vote to pass the bill for it to become law.

The money in this bill replenishes the Restaurant Revitalization Fund, created by the Biden American Rescue Plan that became law in 2021, which provided $28.6 billion for restaurants hit by the pandemic.

In addition to the $42 billion for restaurants in the House bill, it provides another $13 billion for small businesses ineligible for other pandemic relief programs.
