Oklahoma Legislature passes bill to make it illegal to perform abortions, except in medical emergencies

shutterstock_1813699009

On Tuesday, Oklahoma lawmakers passed a bill that would make it illegal to perform an abortion in the state except in medical emergencies, penalizing those who do with up to $100,000 in fines and 10 years in prison.

The state House of Representatives brought the bill to a vote this week, after it was passed last year by the state’s Senate. It now heads to the desk of Governor Kevin Stitt for signing, who has stated his support for anti-abortion legislation. The bill would then take effect this summer, unless blocked by courts.

Several other anti-abortion bills are making its way through Oklahoma’s legislature. Separate legislation introduced this year proposes banning almost all abortions and relying on private citizens to sue any person who “aids or abets” abortions, similar to Texas’ six-week abortion ban. The measure approved on Tuesday states, “a person shall not purposely perform or attempt to perform an abortion except to save the life of a pregnant woman in a medical emergency.”

Oklahoma has become a destination for Texas women seeking abortions, since Texas in September banned abortions for pregnancies of six weeks or less.

Former Trump official and New Hampshire congressional candidate Matt Mowers voted in two states’ primaries in 2016

shutterstock_318051842

Matt Mowers — a former Trump administration official, and leading Republican primary candidate running for Congress in New Hampshire — voted twice during the 2016 primary election season, possibly violating federal voting law.

Mowers cast an absentee ballot in New Hampshire’s 2016 presidential primary, voting records show. At the time, Mowers served as the director of former New Jersey governor Chris Christie’s presidential campaign in the pivotal early voting state. Four months later, Mowers cast another ballot in New Jersey’s Republican presidential primary, using his parents’ address to re-register in his home state, according to documents obtained by the Associated Press.

Legal experts say Mowers’ actions could violate a federal law that prohibits “voting more than once” in “any general, special, or primary election”. That includes casting a ballot in separate jurisdictions “for an election to the same candidacy or office”.

Mowers’ campaign declined to make him available for an interview. In a brief statement, campaign spokesperson John Corbett said: “Matt was proud to work for President Trump as the GOP establishment was working to undermine his nomination. Matt moved for work and was able to participate in the primary in support of President Trump and serve as a delegate at a critical time for the Republican Party and country.”

CHS DRAMA CLUB TO PERFORM MUSICAL “GODSPELL” THIS WEEKEND

img-2242-560x420-1

The Crookston High School Drama Club presents the musical “Godspell” directed by Beth Carlson in the Crookston High School Auditorium on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, April 8-10 at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets are available from the cast members or at the door for $8 for adults and $5 for students. The musical is a retelling of the Gospel of Matthew set in a modern-day city, where young men and women take up the mantles of Jesus’s disciples. The musical is full of fun songs and tear-jerking moments, with stories full of funny jokes and deep-thinking lessons.

The Drama Club has performed “Godspell” for the High School before in recent years, yet had to shut it down due to COVID-19 two years ago, but Director Beth Carlson is feeling quite confident to perform it again better than before now with a live audience and with many of the students in that performance returning for this one as well. “We call this Godspell 2.0, as 1.0 happened two years ago, and several of the same students were in that original cast.” Carlson explained, “Though we lost several outstanding students too, so I always have mixed feelings that it’s going to be a different show and it’s not going to be the same. But every show with a different cast is a new experience for me, and I think this one has come together so beautifully, and I’m so excited for the audience to see it.” Due to COVID restrictions two years ago, the Drama Club was only able to perform the first act, but now with restrictions lifted, the students are excited to perform the musical in full. “We did this one two years ago, but due to COVID, we could only perform the first half, and we never got to do a show for the public, but I’m glad we’re doing it again.” Explained Senior Logan Melvie, who plays the role of Lamar, “I’m playing the same role as I did last time, and I think I really have him down. It’s a really enjoyable show for any age; it’s got everything.”

The Drama Club seniors were excited to perform the musical again for the second time in two years, yet sad for it to be their last performance at the High School. Senior Jazmine Doyea, who plays the role of Sonia, expressed her sadness in her final performance with the Drama Club but also expressed how theater has impacted her life, “I’m definitely going to miss being here, but I plan to continue community theater, and it’s definitely not going to be the last play I ever do.” Doyea explained, “My favorite part of theater is seeing others develop into their characters and how it makes them more confident in themselves, and overall improves the quality of how we act around school. It makes us happier, more connected, and gave me friends because I transferred schools quite often, so every time I joined a play, that was how I made friends, and they’re the friends I get to keep.” Senior George French, who plays the lead role of Jesus, is excited to play his first leading role with the High School and see the musical come together after a month and a half. “It’s a great musical, there’s a lot of emotions put into it, and I think the audience will have a great time watching it. And they should keep an eye out for Act II as you never know what happens towards the end of a play,” French explained. Director Carlson expressed her feelings on how hard it is every year to say goodbye to students she has made so many memories with, but on how she always feels they are prepared to go to the next stage of their lives. “Every year, this happens to me, and every year I think, “I’m losing this batch,” Carlson explained, “I have been going through this for so long that I keep track of kids based on when they’re last show was when they come back to visit. But it’s always time for them to move on, and like some of them, like Georgie, have been with me in my musicals since 6th or 7th grade with me, it’s hard to see them go as you’ve seen them reach that certain point and you’ve seen their growth and remember where they started. It’s hard, but it’s time for them to move on to the next step soon.”

The Drama Club will perform the musical for the Senior Citizens that partake in the CHS Leo Club’s Senior Brunch on Thursday, April 7, at 9:30 a.m. They will then perform at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, April 8-10, in the Crookston High School Auditorium. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students.

CROOKSTON CITY COUNCIL SETS UP IN-PERSON INTERVIEWS WITH FINAL FOUR CITY ADMINISTRATOR CANDIDATES

crookston-city-council-49

The Crookston City Council met tonight in the Crookston City Council chambers in the lower level of Crookston City Hall for a Special Meeting.

REGULAR AGENDA

The meeting only held one item on the Regular Agenda, which was for the Council to select the finalists to be interviewed for the City Administrator position. The Council is keeping the identities confidential and addressed them as numbers. Council Member Erickson opened by believing that none of the current candidates are good choices to move forward with an interview yet, with Council Member Briggs and Mayor Stainbrok agreeing. “The Council members had different criteria they used and were not in complete agreement initially if any of these candidates were to be brought forth to interview.” Interim City Administrator Charles “Corky” Reynolds explained. Councilmember Klatt then recommended that candidate #4 was the best choice as of now to move forward with Council members Jerde, Erickson, and Kresl agreeing that their resume, cover letter, qualities, and references made them a great candidate. At first, the Council agreed that they could extend the advertising for the position again to recruit more candidates while keeping #4 in the pool.

But after a discussion on how they would address the Candidate on how they were still looking for candidates while he was still an option, rather than choose him as the best option. They decided that he could be brought in for a quick interview to begin a part of the process with him without feeling like he was not qualified enough to get it now. Councilmember Klatt recommended that instead of a Meet and Greet style of interview and introduction that they have done in the past, the Council will invite the Candidate to come in and see each department and meet the department heads for a few days to see how they would act with each one. He then suggested that they try Candidate #4 in this strategy and potentially two to three others to this strategy before they aim to expand the applicant pool. The Council then gave their preferred rankings of the candidates to see which of the top ones would be included in this new process. But after going around the room, they chose to bring all four candidates due to each member having mixed placings for all of them, with the exception of #4 being the unanimous choice as the favorite. “By the process of discussing the relative merits of each Candidate. The Council concluded that it was best to bring all four candidates forward because the Council agreed that in the last interview process for the City Administrator, great benefits were received by seeing the candidates in person.” Interim Administrator Reynolds explained, “Candidates who may not have been attractive during the interview process with the community. The Council decided to bring all four candidates here, where we can interview them individually, have a community meet and greet, and they can meet with Department heads and get a full picture of each Candidate.” The Council then decided to inform the candidates of the upcoming process before releasing a press release to the public and media of the entire list of the candidates.

The Council then discussed the final process and drafts of their interview questions and that the Council should cover the travel milage and hotel payments for at least one day for the candidates coming to Crookston to allow them to see the City at their leisure. “We want to make it attractive for the candidates to come here.” Reynolds explained, “We want to provide them lodging for one night so that maybe the day prior to the interview process, they’ll explore the community, meet with the county, school, and industry officials in Crookston so they can have a better idea of what is here and express those ideas when they’re interviewed by the Council themselves.” With that decision, they chose to move the interviews for the position to Tuesday, May 3, for the candidates to see the City at an active time during the week rather than on a Sunday.

Council Member Erickson then quickly asked the Council what they should change or do in case none of the candidates would be chosen so they could quickly begin sending out offers again for another pool of candidates rather than drag out the search with a Council with no Administrator. “We hope one of these four is the right person for our community. But failing that, the process would be to select a time where we would go out and advertise again and seek new candidates.” Interim Administrator Reynolds explained, “But that’s a fallback position, not our first preference. We hope that one of these four stands out and Crookston selects that person to be our next City Administrator.”

The Council approved all these decisions unanimously.

CLOSED NEGOTIATIONS DISCUSSION

The Council met immediately after the meeting in a closed meeting for Negotiations Discussion, for a motion to Close Meeting Pursuant to Minnesota Government Data Practices Act. Interim City Administrator Charles “Corky” Reynolds reported that he would give the results of the negotiations at the City Council meeting next week.

The next City Council meeting will take place on Monday, April 11, at 7:00 p.m. inside the City Hall Council Chambers.
