LIGHTNING STRIKE STARTS FIRE IN RURAL CLIMAX

fire-graphic-42

On Sunday, May 29, at approximately 4:55 a.m., the Polk County Sheriff’s Office received report of a possible fire at 38026 33oth Avenue SW of Climax.

A Deputy arrived on scene and located multiple fuel tanks near an outbuilding on the property. One of the fuel tanks was on fire. Climax Fire and Rescue responded and was able to extinguish the flames prior to the fire spreading to the other tanks and buildings. The only damage sustained during the incident was to the fuel tanks. There were no injuries reported. The cause of the fire is believed to be from a lighting strike from the overnight storms. At this time, no foul play is suspected and no other information will be released.

Crookston Area Ambulance and Crookston Fire Department also assisted on the call.

SUMMER LIBRARY EXPERIENCE RETURNS WITH A SPLASH TO THE CROOKSTON PUBLIC LIBRARY THIS SUMMER

img-3340-320x420-1

The Crookston Public Library is holding its annual Summer Library Experience (SLE) starting on Wednesday, June 1, and going until the end of July. This year’s theme is “Explore! Underwater,” which will consist of many aquatic and ocean-themed events. The events are geared toward children ages 5 to 11 and free-of-charge thanks to funding from the Minnesota Arts & Cultural Heritage Fund.

The Experience begins on Wednesday, June 1, at 2:00 p.m. with an event happening every Wednesday throughout June and July, with other events like a Reading Contest taking place at the same time. “Our first event will be on June 1, and we will be painting rocks to look like various sea creatures,” Crookston Public Library Associate Cassidy Manninen explained. “We’ll have tables and stations set up around the library, so you can pick a spot and start painting. The paint will need to dry on the rocks, so if it doesn’t dry on time, you can choose to either take it home or leave it here to pick up the next day. Make sure you leave your name on the rocks so that nobody’s rocks get mixed up,” she added. Many other events have been scheduled for every Wednesday from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m., throughout the summer.

Summer Library Experience Events include “Aquarium in a Bottle,” where kids will create sensory bottles of underwater ocean activity to let them see the habitats of aquatic creatures inside a bottle on June 8. An In-Person Drawing Class and Watch Party with award-winning cartoonist Rick Stromoski, who will demonstrate how to draw all sorts of aquatic creatures, which will also be live-streamed in three sessions at larl.org/underwaterdrawing/? on Wednesday, June 15 and Thursday, June 16 at 2:00 p.m., and Friday, June 17, at 10:30 a.m. On June 22, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., they will have a Plant a Pocket of Prairie Art Experience with “Plant a Pocket of Prairie” author Phyllis Root to teach children how to make plantable paper-making activities. There will be a Story Stroll at Wildwood Park on July 6, where the kids will travel through the Park reading the story, “Tap the Magic Tree.” On June 13, the library will go down to the Red Lake River with UMC Agriculture and Natural Resources Department Director Laura Bell to delve into the world of sea creatures and mussels. “There are also some events that differ from the usual schedule,” Cassidy Manninen explained, “Our “Pint-Size Polka” Activity will be on Thursday, June 30, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., and that will feature music, magic, comedy, and trivia. Our “Free Willy” Film Screening will be at the Grand Theatre on Wednesday, July 20, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m., and make sure you bring money for concessions, and our last event is on Thursday, July 28, from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m., which will be a Magic Show featuring Magic Bob, and he will be doing a Pirate-related theme, so think of any sort of magical experience and substitute it with a Pirate-theme,” she added. To see the full schedule of the Summer Library Experience, you can pick up a flyer from the Crookston Public Library or go to www.larl.org/locations/crookston/ to see the full schedule of activities for each month.

On days not listed on the flyer, the library is still doing its regularly scheduled events at the library, along with a few things they can do at home as well. “On days not listed on the flyer, we have our standard Story Time on Thursdays at 10:30 a.m.,” Manninen explained. “We will also have our Spanish Story Time on the first Tuesday of every month at 6:00 p.m., and feel free to come in and grab a book. We also have coloring sheets and various art-themed activities for you to do while you’re at the library,” she added. Children can also participate in take-home activities the library has, such as a “Make Your Own Coral Reef” Activity, a Take-Home mini-Scavenger Hunt, and the Summer Reading Challenge. For the Scavenger Hunt, the children will have one week to complete and submit it on June 8, to enter a drawing for a Youth Summer Library Experience shirt. For the Summer Reading Challenge, children and parents can download the Beanstack App to enter the Challenge or pick up a reading log from the library to know what books they should get from the library, and they’ll have to read 20 minutes a day for 20 days and markdown those dates on the app or on the calendar. Those who complete the Challenge will win a book or journal and be entered in a drawing for a chance to win a bicycle or fishing gear.

The Summer Library Experience will begin on Wednesday, June 1, at 2:00 p.m. in the Crookston Public Library and meet every Wednesday until the end of July for various events. To see the full schedule of the Summer Library Experience, you can pick up a flyer from the library or go to www.larl.org/locations/crookston/ to see the full schedule of activities. We will also have the dates and times of each event listed and announced on our Bulletin Board every day under the Community Tab, or read off on the air every morning at 6:00 a.m., 7:15 a.m., 10:35 a.m., and at 1:35 p.m on 105.7 FM or 1260 AM.
