Myrdell Vern Skalet, 93, of Crookston, MN, and a former longtime Beltrami, MN farmer, passed away Sunday, January 2, 2022, in the Benedictine Living Community of Crookston after a brief illness.

Myrdell was born in Nielsville, MN on May 27, 1928, one of five children of the union of Nils and Grace (Howland) Skalet. After graduating from Climax, MN High School with the Class of 1946 he worked on area farms until enlisting in the US Army on November 10, 1950. Myrdell served in Germany for 15 months with the 17th Army Engineering Battalion before returning to the States and receiving his honorable discharge at Ft. Custer, MI on November 8, 1952. He was united in marriage to Sady DeYoung Menke in the Scandia Lutheran Church near Beltrami, MN on September 4, 1959. The couple made their home in Nielsville for a little over two years before moving to a farm they purchased in Reis Township, rural Beltrami. Together, Myrdell and Sady operated their farm until retiring in 1991. Retirement meant that Myrdell could devote more time to the Polk County Historical Society in Crookston. He and Sady continued to live on their farmstead until moving to Crookston in October of 2015.

Myrdell and Sady were former members of Scandia Lutheran Church, where Myrdell served on the Church Board. For the past twenty-five years they have been members of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Crookston. He also held membership with Nielsville American Legion Post 336 for over 60 years. Myrdell was extremely proud of his collection of antique tractors. When it came time to sell them at auction he was very happy to see them go to buyers who would appreciate having them just as much as he had. He and Sady enjoyed attending the annual Western Minnesota Steam Threshers Reunion at Rollag, MN until recent years.

Myrdell will be deeply missed by Sady, his beloved wife of 62 years; his brother and sister-in-law, Lawrence and Linda Skalet of Fargo, ND; sister, Janis Thompson of Caledonia, ND; sister-in-law, Doris Skalet of Brainerd, MN; Sady’s nephew, Wayne DeYoung of Shelly, MN; and several other nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Nils and Grace; sister and brother-in-law, Leatrice and Kenneth Sondrol; and brother, Marlys Skalet. Blessed be the memory of Myrdell Vern Skalet.

The location for the funeral service for Myrdell Skalet has been changed to the Trinity Lutheran Church in Beltrami, MN at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, May 10, 2022. It was originally scheduled to be at the Fairview Cemetery near Beltrami. Visitation at the church will be for one hour prior to the funeral. The service will be livestreamed by going to Myrdell’s obituary page at www.stenshoelhouske.com and clicking on the prompt to view.

Please send messages of condolence to Sady Skalet at www.stenshoelhouske.com

Gail Petersen Harwell – Obit

gail-harwell-obituary-photo-e1651669799561

Gail Petersen Harwell, 81,  passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 26, 2022, at RiverView Care Center in Crookston, where she had been a resident since October of 2021.

She was born October 7, 1940, to Norma and Jerry Petersen at Minette’s Maternity Home in Fertile, where she also attended school, first grade through 12th. From her early years, she had a curiosity for the world and would stand on the front porch and say, “Just wait for me world, I’ll get there.”

To achieve that goal, Gail was a determined high achiever in high school, which led to a full scholarship at Northwestern University Medill School of Journalism. After earning her Bachelor of Science in 1962, she launched a career as an advertising writer in Chicago. She was named a Vice President of J. Walter Thompson Company-Chicago in 1969, where she worked primarily in television, writing for such accounts as Sears dishwashers, Kraft Foods, Sunbeam, and Jovan fragrances. In 1977, she moved to Boston and Arnold & Company; in 1979 to Manhattan and JWT New York; in 1983 to Los Angeles and Evans Advertising; and in 1993 to Marin County in the Bay Area.

Gail met her husband Richard Sterling Harwell in 1971 at Great Lakes, IL, at the end of a sailing race. They were separated by geography and circumstances, but fate brought them together again 20 years later, and they were married in 1993 at Concordia Lutheran Church in Fertile.

In 1995, Gail changed careers, becoming an independent editorial consultant in the engineering-construction field. She often worked alongside Sterling; writing, editing, formatting, and producing proposals, feasibility studies, and marketing materials for multibillion-dollar construction projects. She worked in Asia, Europe, Australia, and Central America, as well as across the U.S., continuing until her final retirement at the age of 73. From that time, Gail and Sterling enjoyed a life of tennis, travel, volunteering, and relaxation overlooking San Francisco Bay. They were members of the Belvedere Tennis Club and the San Francisco Yacht Club. Gail was an avid reader, and she belonged to a local book club for 10 years.

Friends will remember her for her meticulous planning and orchestration of many wonderful birthday parties, club gatherings, and class reunions.

Both Gail and Sterling will be remembered by family for initiating and maintaining the “Petersen-Harwell Perpetual Ping Pong Tournament,” complete with engraved trophy. Gail made sure the results with photos were posted in the Fertile Journal.

Family and friends recall her kindness, generosity, acute sense of humor, infectious laugh, courage, and fierce determination. She had a certain “twinkle in her eyes,” and she will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Gail was preceded in death by her husband, R. Sterling Harwell, by her older sister, and best friend, Marlys Ozga, and by an infant nephew. She is survived by brothers, Harold (Candy) of Brookline, MA, and Michael (Carol) of Fertile, and brother-in-law, Edward Ozga of Plymouth, MN, nine nieces and nephews, a host of grandnieces and grandnephews, and one great-grandniece.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Parkinson’s disease research or Hospice of the Red River Valley.

Memorial Service: 2:00 PM, Saturday, June 11, 2022, at Erikson-Vik-Ganje Funeral Home, Fertile, MN.

Former President Donald Trump settles lawsuit with the District of Columbia over accusations of improperly spending non-profit funds

shutterstock_1648182658

Court documents show that former President Donald Trump settled a lawsuit on Tuesday with the District of Columbia over accusations of improperly spending non-profit funds. Trump agreed to pay $750,000 to settle the lawsuit that was filed against Trump’s Presidential Inaugural Committee, Trump International Hotel Washington D.C., and the Trump Organization.

The District of Columbia attorney general’s lawsuit accused the inaugural committee of spending more than $1 million in non-profit funds at the Trump-owned hotel. It said the committee misused $1.1 million in charitable funds to “dramatically overpay” the hotel for event space, to throw a private party for the former president’s children and to pay a private debt held by the Trump Organization. The suit was filed in 2020.

The inaugural committee raised $107 million for Trump’s inauguration in January 2017, more than doubling the previous record for any other incoming president. The money will be divided equally, with half going to the Mikva Challenge Grant Foundation, and the other half to the DC Action for Children Today DC ACT. Trump said in a statement following the settlement: “Given the impending sale of the Trump International Hotel, Washington D.C., and with absolutely no admission of liability or guilt, we have reached a settlement to end all litigation.”
