kailee-magsam-339x420-1

The Crookston Pirate Girls Track and Field team finished second out of 11 teams and will advance eight girls in 10 events to the Section 8A meet and the Pirate Boys finished eighth out of 11 teams and will advance five individuals in four events after the Section 8A West Sub-section meet in Warren.

The top five placers in each individual event will advance to the Section 8A meet and the top three relay teams automatically advance to the Section 8A meet.
For the athletes not in the top five individually, the next six best times/throws/jumps between the two sub-sections will also advance.  We won’t find that out until later tonight or Friday morning.

GIRLS –
Crookston was led, once again, by Breanna Kressin with three first-place finishes.  Breanna easily won the 100-meter hurdles, the 300-meter hurdles, and the 200-meter races.   She alone earned 30 points for her team.

Cassie Solheim is also advancing to the Section 8A meet in three events.  She finished second place in the 100 meters, second place in the long jump, and was also on the second-place 4×100 relay team with Halle Winjum, Makayla Tahran, and Carly Thode.

Halle Winjum is also advancing in three events with a third-place finish in the pole vault, she was on the second-place 4×100 relay team, and the third-place 4×200 relay team.

Hayden Winjum will also advance to sections in three events.  She finished fourth place in the Triple Jump, fifth place in the 800-meters, and she was on the third-place 4×200 relay team.

COACH AMY BOLL’S COMMENTS ARE BELOW –

BOYS –
The Pirate Boys were led by Ethan Boll, Brady Wisk, and Carter Coauette as they will be advancing in two events apiece.

Boll finished fourth in the 100 meters and he was also on the second-place 4×100 relay team.

Brady Wisk finished fourth place in the 200-meters and he was also on the second-place 4×100 relay team.

Carter Coauette finished fifth place in the 200 meters and he was also on the 4×100 relay team.

Thor Harbott had a second-place finish in the 1600-meters and he also finished sixth place in the 3200-meters.  He advances in the 1600 and is pretty much assured he will advance in the 3200 as a wild card.

BENEDICTINE LIVING COMMUNITY COMPLETES TRAINING AND RIBBON-CUTTING CEREMONY FOR NEW BIKE

img-3321-560x420-1

The Benedictine Living Community held its training and ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday afternoon for its new handicap accessible bike that they had fundraised over the past couple of years. Community volunteers all met with a trainer to learn how to properly operate the bike to help Community members get on the bike and ride it around different terrain.

The bike is modified to hold a two-person capacity carriage with a Hoyer lift for Community members to get into the seat and seat belts for riders to strap themselves in safely. The carriage is in front of the bike rider with a small cover overhead to protect riders from the sun, as well as a small duffel that riders can cover themselves with to stay warm and comfortable in cooler parts of spring and fall. The bike also has a small motor on its back wheel that is controlled by a small mechanism on the handlebars to assist the Volunteer rider in giving the Community members a smooth ride and help them up hills or other terrains much easier.

The Community volunteers were instructed by Jake Krohn from the Cycling Without Age Organization, who taught them how to operate the Hoyer lift and the back wheel motor properly. He would demonstrate how to use both before allowing the Volunteers to try it for themselves and monitored their progress. When they were properly trained on how to operate the bike, he awarded them a certificate showing that they had completed the training to use the bike.

Many Community volunteers and staff have been certified to use the bike, and a few community members have already been for a ride. Both agree that the bike is a very smooth and enjoyable ride. “It rides as smooth as can be, despite it having such big tires and frame. You’d think it would be rough, but it’s way smoother than the other things we use,” Benedictine Community member Audrey Johnson explained. “It’s a real smooth ride, it isn’t bumpy or anything due to its air tires,” she added. Many members have even compared the bike to riding a car due to how smoothly it rides and are excited to use it to travel to various places in Crookston. “I’d use it maybe to go spearfishing or something like that along the lakeshore,” Audrey Johnson explained. “Some places where you can’t get in with a car or Jeep,” she added.

The Community also mentioned that they are also offering training for the bike to family members of the Community residents if they wish to take a family member out for the day on the bike. But, they must go through the training process in order to do so. If anyone wishes to take the training to operate the bike, they can set up an appointment by contacting Volunteer Coordinator Ashley Melsa or Karen Swatlowski at 218-281-3242.

Pictures of the bike and some of the training can be seen below,

DNR REMINDS BOATERS THAT WITH BUSY MEMORIAL DAY BOATING WEEKEND, SAFETY IS KEY

minnesota-department-of-natural-resources-6

The weather forecast for Memorial Day looks idyllic, which will create busy waterways throughout the state. Given that, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources reminds boaters to keep safety in mind.

So far this year, two people have died on the water. DNR officials say all boaters have a role to play in keeping Minnesota’s lakes and rivers safe.

“We’ve seen almost-unprecedented pressure on our state’s waterways the past few years, and there’s no reason to think anything will be different this year,” said Lt. Adam Block, Enforcement Division boating law administrator. “It’s great to see people enjoying the best of our natural resources, but before they do, we ask them to take a few moments to ensure every boat ride is a safe boat ride.”

With boaters of all experience and skill levels sharing Minnesota’s waterways, it’s up to every boater to do their part to ensure everyone makes it home at the end of the day. These safety tips can help make the start of the summer boating season fun, memorable and safe:

  • Wear a life jacket, don’t just bring it. Ninety percent of boating fatality victims in the state weren’t wearing a life jacket. While the law requires children under 10 to wear a life jacket while the boat is underway, wearing a life jacket is the best way boaters of all ages can help ensure they get home safely.
  • Leave the alcohol onshore. Not only is boating under the influence illegal, but it’s also the single greatest factor in fatal boating accidents.
  • Check safety equipment. Make sure life jackets fit and are in good condition, and check to ensure your boat’s navigation lights, sound-producing devices, fire extinguishers, and carbon monoxide detectors are in good condition. Also, inspect the engine cut-off lanyard and make sure to wear it when the boat is underway.
  • Pay attention to high water. Water levels in waterways throughout the state are high this year. High water can make access difficult but also present safety risks by hiding hazards beneath the water’s surface.
  • Own your wake. Large wakes can have environmental consequences (causing shoreline erosion, for example) and present dangers to other boaters, paddlers, and swimmers.
  • Brush up on the rules. Read the 2022 Minnesota Boating Guide (mndnr.gov/Regulations/BoatWater) and take an online education course (mndnr.gov/Safety/BoatWater/Education.html) to help increase your knowledge. More information, including boater education requirements and information on safe boating, is on the boat and water safety page of the DNR website (gov/Safety/BoatWater).

Lloyd and Shirley Lee – Obit

lloyd-and-shirley-lee-photo-e1653576432976

Lloyd and Shirley Lee, longtime Crookston Central High School educators, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 24, 2022, at Amira Choice in Plymouth, MN. They had moved to Plymouth a year ago to be near their daughter, Sondi, and her family. Shirley passed away in the early morning hours and Lloyd in the evening. They shared their lives together for over 63 years and will now share eternity.

Lloyd Norman Lee, 87, was born on August 4, 1934, in rural Roseau County to Ole and Rose Lee.  He graduated from Badger High School in 1952.  Lloyd then attended college at Bemidji State University, graduating in 1956 with a B.S. degree in music education.  In 1964, he received his M.S. degree from the University of North Dakota.

Shirley Violet (Brekke) Lee, 88, was born on May 5, 1934, in Fosston, MN to Lloyd and Gertrude Brekke.  She graduated from Fosston High School in 1953, and in 1957 earned her B.S. degree in education from Bemidji State University.

Lloyd’s teaching career began in Verndale, MN where he taught band, choir, and elementary vocal music.  He served in the U.S. Army National Guard from 1957 to 1964 and taught vocal music in Deer River, MN.  Shirley’s teaching career began in Parker’s Prairie, MN from 1957 to 1958 where she taught science and physical education.

On December 22, 1958, college sweethearts, Lloyd and Shirley, were married in Fosston, MN.  They then taught together in Stephen, MN for two years.

In 1960, they accepted positions to teach in Crookston, MN, and taught until their retirement in 1994. Over the years, Lloyd taught Band (and Orchestra for 15 years) and Shirley taught 7th-9th grade science, American History and Biology.  Shirley also had the honor of serving as an interim high school principal in 1984.

Lloyd and Shirley were very proud of their students.  Lloyd was especially proud of the students in band and their many accomplishments and awards including marching in the 1991 Cotton Bowl Parade on New Year’s Day, the 1988 Kentucky Derby Parade, and at Disney World in 1985 and 1994.  He also enjoyed leading them at many Potato Bowl Parades in Grand Forks, performing half-time shows at the Winnipeg Blue Bombers professional football games, and having the marching band star in a TV commercial for Old Dutch Potato Chips in 1984.

Shirley enjoyed being a Sunday school teacher, and member of WELCA and the Martha Bible Study.  She was also a past President of Woman’s Club.  Lloyd enjoyed playing in the Minnesota 9th District American Legion Band, singing in the Trinity Lutheran Men’s Chorus, and serving as a certified music adjudicator for the Minnesota State High School League.

Lloyd and Shirley enjoyed golfing, hunting, attending concerts, musicals, and athletic events.  Their greatest joy was attending the sporting events and concerts of grandsons, Thor and Rolf. They loved being “snowbirds” and spent 20 wonderful winters in Gulf Shores, Alabama.
